#PhysicianFertility (NOT a pregnancy post) ❓Did you know that WOMEN IN MEDICINE have DOUBLE the rates of infertility when compared to their non-medical, female counterparts? That means, 1 in 4 of us will struggle with infertility. It is a problem that is barely recognized and hardly addressed. I rarely talked about my fertility journey because I was embarrassed, ashamed, I felt damaged, and felt that something within was broken and made me less of a woman. I was diagnosed with #PCOS 16 years ago, started my first fertility treatment 13 years ago, and only last year did they find out that I had a very rare type of PCOS. 💗So, for #FertilityFriday I would love to bring awareness and show support to all the women struggling with infertility and to all the female physicians who fear that their work/infectious disease exposures, 24hr-call schedules, or baseline stress burden will keep them from ever conceiving. 📷This is NOT a selfie of me saying that I am pregnant but rather me saying that we are 1 step closer. 🍞I’ve found that my newfound hobby of baking bread makes it way easier for me to explain my fertility journey in making a baby. After years of trial and error, we have the RIGHT INGREDIENTS and this is my post-call happy face showing my family that it looks like we just found OUR RECIPE. The step we are currently struggling with is getting everything in the bowl just right to get our sticky dough ready to bake! I’m thinking the “baking” is the actual 9-month pregnancy part in this analogy:) Needless to say, this has been a private battle that statistically didn’t need to be. In slowly opening up I have found a network of #support and love. ❤️And above all, I’m so blessed to have the best husband who never misses a 9pm stimshot, drives me 45+ mins for blood work and ultrasound appointments, and prays with me everyday for a healthy baby! A few tools that I’ve found super helpful this year have been my iPad mini and Apple Pencil. At the beginning of the year, we traded in our old iPads for these new minis. During the day, I’m able to look up information using resources like UpToDate and Epocrates. I can also write notes using the Notability app which helps keep everything organized. My friends @vranpariya and @joshrosh recommended getting an @apple Pencil earlier this year and it’s been so useful in the clinic. Meet our Students - Rameda Lee Rameda Lee is an 8th trimester DC student who recently added student blogger to her list of campus activities that already includes memberships in the Fellowship of Christian University Students (FOCUS), the Student American Black Chiropractic Association (SABCA), the Black Naturopathic Medical Student Association (BNMSA) and the Motion Palpation Club. In May of this year, Lee was only the second NUHS chiropractic student to be awarded the prestigious Albert Schweitzer fellowship. Throughout the year, she will be designing and facilitating bi-monthly seminars that provide for sharing resources related to health equity, wellness, and health services with the goal of improving the well-being of an underserved Chicago community. Lee offered the following advice to her classmates, Appreciate the privilege it is to be able to choose a profession that you are able to pursue; accept and fully internalize the responsibility that comes with being a representative of your field; strive to be the best example possible and last; but certainly not least, this is your journey, so you set the pace and enjoyment of it. Bring the crash cart!! ‼️😨 Roles nurses can play during a code to make sure the event runs smoothly: 🚨Recorder: The recorder should be writing the time the code began (or if you’re in ED, ask the EMT’s bringing the patient in what time compressions began) then record any medication dose given and the time. Be aware of the time because you will advise the physician how long it’s been since the last dose and when it’s time to check for a pulse 🚨Airway: typically once a person is coding the physician will intubate. Once the patient has been intubated, the Respiratory Therapist present at the code will be maintaining the airway and using the AmbuBag to ventilate. The physician then focuses solely on running the code 🚨Compressions: there should be at least 2-3 people cycling through compressions. This is a great way for the new nurses to be involved in the code. Remember 2.5in deep on the compressions at a rate of 100-120bpm 🚨IV’s/Medications: In ED, these full arrests may not have IV access. This becomes top priority since without it you cannot give medications. Two nurses should be obtaining access and if all else fails: IO access. Once access is available, one nurse who put in the IV should stay in place and administer the medications, being sure to call out loud and clear the dosages and when the medication goes in 🚨Runner: For the code/full arrest to be effective there should always be 1-2 people at the ready to run and grab more supplies as needed. Currently working in the mental health unit at Townsville University Hospital, Tom’s passion for helping people shines through in his work every day as well as in his role as a union delegate. “Mental health is a different environment from usual hospital work and there are numerous challenges. Growing up as a left-handed pitcher in West Texas, Hunt Batjer, M.D., dreamed of taking the mound for the @yankees. Brain surgeon was his backup plan. Drafted out of high school by the @orioles – which already had a deep pitching staff – he took his father’s advice and accepted a baseball scholarship to @utaustintx. But a rotator cuff injury ended his baseball career, and he applied to medical school at #UTSouthwestern. Now internationally recognized as a leading cerebrovascular surgeon, Dr. Batjer is the 2020 recipient of the Harvey Cushing Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). “This is a wonderful honor that in my field is somewhere between a lifetime achievement award and our Neurosurgical Hall of Fame,” said Dr. Batjer, Chair and Professor of Neurological Surgery, part of UT Southwesterns Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute. In addition to his never-ending passion for cerebrovascular problems, Dr. Batjer has focused much of his career on traumatic brain injury, particularly in sports. He spent eight years as co-Chair of the @nfl Head, Neck, and Spine Committee, which developed the league’s #concussion protocol. “It was through hard work in that arena that we were able to enact 40 rules changes that further defined and protected defenseless players,” he said. “One of those was moving the restraining line 5 yards forward, which reduced concussions on kickoffs by 40 percent.” Dr. Batjer continues to work with @uiltexas, the governing body for public middle, junior high, and high schools in Texas. The UIL’s Medical Advisory Committee oversees safety issues for +1 million student-athletes. He came aboard the UTSW faculty in 1983 and served for 13 years before joining @nufeinbergmed as the founding Chair of Neurological Surgery. As someone who works in both a private practice and large open dental clinic where there are many people around, precaution is so vital. I see people starting to take it easy since the cases have been low. Please remember that the weather is changing and its much cooler now and flu season is beginning. Please also remember to wear your masks and wash your hands as much as you can. The mask you wear protects others around you. As annoying and time consuming as it is, I still wash all my fruits and veggies and wipe down my groceries and packages. Shower after work or going out. Overkill? Maybe, but it makes me feel safe so Ill continue to do it. Additionally my family and I are getting the flu vaccine in the next few weeks. Dont forget to get your flu shot this year as its another way to protect you, your family and others around you. How do I look? Does it matter? . . I wish it didnt. Recently, in my dermatology clinic Ive had patients coming in with complications from using products trying to change their appearance. One lady wanted to lighten her skin and used a product which caused a severe rash and left her with patchy pigmentation. Another with problems following using a tattoo type treatment. . . My patients tell me they wish they were lighter/ darker/ less hair/ less redness etc etc. Its mostly women but men have these issues too. . . I help where I can, but the solution is wider? Why is society so hung up on appearance? Im guilty of it too and try and post pictures where I look half decent. When younger I also wanted to fix so many things about my looks and I usually wear make up when out to hide flaws. . . Ik baal ook van de corona maatregelen. Ik mag al meer dan een half jaar mijn liefste vrienden/vriendinnen en familie geen knuffel of kus geven. De kinderen van mijn neefjes, nichtjes en oppaskinderen, een aantal geboren in coronatijd, kan ik niet eens aanraken of knuffelen. Ik mis dat en het doet veel pijn. Dat hele kleine beetje intimiteit is gewoon niet mogelijk. Dat is niet makkelijk, maar ik weet wel dat er geen andere weg is. ❤️ To be honest, I felt a little silly doing this pose. Seems people like to hold things out in front of them on instagram like...here is a stethoscope! 😆 . But, on a more serious note, let’s talk about matters of the heart. . 💔 Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is the number one killer in females as well, which is often overlooked. Men present with the more classic, grip-your-chest type of symptoms. Females notoriously present with more subtle symptoms, which may even feel like indigestion. This is not meant to scare you, just to keep you aware. . 😯 I had an unusual symptom when I started running again after having my daughter. I went and got checked out, and turns out I was having benign symptomatic PVC’s (extra heart beats) but it was so reassuring to know that all was well. It was an expensive work-up to figure out that I was just out of shape! But, I am so glad I did it. . ✨ A few of my favorite heart health recommendations: . ❤️ Take CoQ10 100 mg twice per day. This is great for the heart. If you happen to be on a statin, you MUST be taking CoQ10 with it. (As a side note, this supplement is also great for fertility as well. Improves egg quality.) . 🥗 Aim for 7-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. More veggies than fruits. A serving size is a medium size piece of fruit, 1/2 cup cooked veggies or 1 cup raw veggies. . 🍎 Get at least 25 grams of fiber per day. With a mix of soluble and insoluble fiber. Fruits, veggies, beans/lentils, nuts, gluten-free grains. . 🥘 If you consume animal protein, try to think of it as a side, and not the main part of the meal. Your plate should be loaded with produce and healthy fats, and the meat as the “side.” . 🏃🏻♀️Walking just 30 minutes 5 days per week can lower your risk. . 🍫 Dark chocolate has heart healthy flavanols, that can improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, and can boost mood. The Cleveland Clinic says 1 ounce a few times per week for heart health. Yes please! . 🧘🏻♀️ Manage stress! Reposted from @drlorashahine “I Just Want My Body to Work” -anyone with PCOS One of my first patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome taught me so much about the emotional impact of this common endocrine disorder. Early in my training I was doing what I was taught - PCOS patients either want to get pregnant or not and since this patient wanted to start her family I was focusing on the medications we could use to get her ovaries to recruit and release an egg to help her conceive. I was drawing a picture of an ovary and pituitary gland, showing with arrows how the meds would impact the hormones in her body to allow for ovulation - I was so proud of my drawing and teaching that I missed her tears for a few minutes. 👩🏻⚕️“I just want my body to work - I don’t want to take medication’.. I reassured her and comforted her. As a fertility doctor I viewed PCOS as a wonderful ‘problem’ to have because there are eggs to work with and medications to help recruit - I was so happy to have solutions to her problem and ways to help her start her family BUT that’s not the whole point. She helped me realize how important it is to explain the signs and symptoms she was having in relationship to hormones. She taught me about the emotional impact of being labeled with a diagnosis. She taught me how scary it can be to not understand why periods do not come regularly. ❤️I now tell patients “PCOS is not your fault, this is whats going on in your body, and here is what we can do to help. PCOS patients have a higher rate of anxiety and depression and it’s important to address while caring for them. It’s more than a medical diagnosis with a quick solution. Sewing scrubs from scratch is not cost or time effective, so I decided to buy second hand ones and repair + rework them instead. Repaired rips and reinforced the weak seams. Covered the embroidered Douglas College logo with a @protectfrontlineworkers logo. Added a chest pocket with separation for pens. Also functions to block the embroidered text. Ive been getting a lot of great messages and questions about specialty choice and how to pick what is right for you. My biggest piece of advice- find the best fit for you and factor in your personality. Your classmate may hate a specialty you love and vice versa. But it doesnt matter what anyone thinks. Stay true to yourself regardless of income, or clean cut hours. Yea, these things can play a role on satisfaction based on some surveys but in reality if you dont like what you are doing it wont matter. Life is short and youve worked so hard to get here. Kyeisha is a Senior at the University of Maryland, College Park where she is a Cellular Biology and Genetics Major and French minor on the pre-medical track! In the future she hopes to become a Physician, more specifically working as an Ob/Gyn! . . . Why Did Kyeisha Choose STEM? I chose STEM after falling in love with chemistry in my high school Honors Chemistry course. I loved how STEM classes were able to answer so many questions about the world around us I didnt know I even had. I was fascinated to learn about everyday natural processes such as the chemical reactions that occur and understand why that happens from an atomic and elemental level. Those interests met my love for helping others and lead me to medicine and to now study processes in our bodies from a cellular and molecular level. As I finish out my last year in college, STEM continues to challenge and excite me! . . . What is Kyeishas Greatest Piece of Advice? I think some of the best advice Ive gotten is to be unapologetically yourself! I think often times there are these stereotypes of what being in STEM looks like that us Black STEM Queens dont always fit into - but embracing all that I am and being myself rather than conform or try to fit in has been the best step to flourishing as a student in STEM.
