🔶 World Cleanup Day - 2020 🔶 So, I managed to get along two of my batch mates @shreem__28 & @sujith_vreddy to join me on a cleanup of a canal yesterday. It was a very shocking experience for me because I witnessed the same amount of trash littered around here as I have in India and on the beaches in Dubai. Thats made me understand even more the magnitude of how much of a problem plastic is. By the time we were done, we managed to collect 5 kgs+ in just an hour! We collected everything from cigarette butts to entire footballs from the canal. The guys took the footballs home to use for themselves but the rest of the stuff was disposed off in the garbage chute. We also had three people stop by to talk to us and say thank you and its always nice to have other people acknowledge your efforts. Also, we found two carcasses of ducks that had signs of death as a result of the plastic in their territory. The European Athletics Council today (8) confirmed that the European Athletics U18 Championships, scheduled to take place from 16 to 19 July this year in Rieti, Italy, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be rescheduled for 2021 at a date still to be confirmed. On Saturday, the Animal Health Team worked with the Animal Science Team as well as professionals from Lion Country Safari, the Brevard Zoo, and the Zoo Hoofstock Trim Program to immobilize, Pongo, a nearly 2,000 pound male giraffe that stands over 16 feet tall. Because of a giraffes extraordinary size and anatomy, anesthetizing an adult is extremely dangerous and presents a serious risk of not being able to recover that can lead to death. This is the first time in the history of the zoo that such a procedure has been performed and it likely saved this majestic animals life. Over two dozen people worked together doing a variety of tasks that included X-rays, blood and tissue collection, hoof trims and the shaping and attachment of custom shoes to help immobilize and stabilize a fracture that Pongo had in his rear foot. Thankfully, everything went well and Pongo was able to stand on his own after he was administered the reversal drugs. He has since been reunited with the rest of the herd where the severe lameness he had demonstrated prior to the procedure is now gone!! We were joined by 7 young volunteers and 2 DTDO office staff who were quite excited to get into the water and clean up waste littered into the stream. Helden in de zorg Het zorgpersoneel leverde zeer grote inspanningen tijdens de coronacrisis. Zonder twijfel zijn zij de grote helden van deze crisis. In onze gemeente bleven de personeelsleden van WZC Ter Meeren, WZC Keyhof en Ganspoel op post om de bewoners zo goed mogelijk op te vangen samen met de vrijwilligers. Laat ons ook de huisartsen niet vergeten: zij houden dag in dag uit de vinger aan de pols van onze bevolking. De wisselwerking tussen de medici en paramedici en het lokaal bestuur liep bovendien gesmeerd. Ook het personeel van de thuiszorgdiensten én de thuisverplegers zetten hun werk voort om de mensen thuis te voorzien van de nodige verzorging en begeleiding. UNSERE STADTVERWALTUNG INFORMIERT 𝗞𝗿𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗠ü𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 „𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗳𝘁“ 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼ß-𝗕𝗶𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘂 - 𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗠ü𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻. Die Aktion „Saubere Landschaft“ ist eine Umweltkampagne des Landkreises Darmstadt-Dieburg, die das Bewusstsein und das Verantwortungsgefühl der Bürgerinnen und Bürger gegen die Vermüllung öffentlicher Plätze in ihren Kommunen stärkt und die dieses Jahr bereits ihr 17-jähriges Jubiläum feiert. Die Einführung des Dosen- und Flaschenpfandes hat zwar bewirkt, dass nicht mehr so viele Flaschen im Straßengraben herumliegen, aber dafür nimmt die Menge an achtlos weggeworfenen Pappbechern und Imbissverpackungen zu. Durch regelmäßige Müllsammelaktionen erleben viele Menschen das Problem des „Wilden Mülls“ hautnah und nur wer schon einmal den ganzen Müll aus den Straßengräben herausgesammelt hat, weiß welch mühsame Arbeit dies ist. Mittlerweile ist es schon Tradition, dass am letzten Samstag im September diese kreisweite Müllsammelaktion stattfindet, zu der viele Städte und Gemeinden im Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, so auch Groß-Bieberau, zum „Herbstputz“ einladen. So kam es, dass sich bei trübem Herbstwetter am Samstagmorgen um kurz nach 08:30 Uhr eine motivierte Gruppe von ca. 25 Freiwilligen am Sportplatz in Groß-Bieberau traf und mit Greifzangen, Handschuhen und Müllbeuteln ausgestattet den Kampf gegen den wilden Müll aufnahm. Müll in Hecken, am Bachrand und Straßengräben sieht nicht nur unschön aus, sondern kostet auch immens mehr Geld als eine ordnungsgemäße Entsorgung. Eine saubere Stadt und eine müllfreie Landschaft sind für die meisten Menschen ein wichtiges Stück Lebensqualität. Wo es sauber ist, da fühlen wir uns wohl. Die Kampagne Saubere Landschaft im Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg möchte dabei das Bewusstsein für unsere Umwelt schärfen. I WAS WRONG - You can recycle blister packets! Did you know this? It turns out Terracycle recycle the plastic packets that contain medicinal tablets - with drop-off locations across the UK. Recycling is a minefield. As we know, so much of the plastic recycling we put into our council bins doesnt end up getting recycled with some of it dumped in South East Asia - not ideal... Ive cut down my plastic so dramatically I barely use any at all - but one area of my life Ive struggled to do this is healthcare. This is where Terracycle comes in. Once youve dropped off your empty blister packets, the plastic is separated by polymer type and extruded into plastic pellets to be repurposed. Great! *The bad news bit.....* Currently there are only 13 drop off centres for blister packet, our closest is in Stockport with other UK participating pharmacies in Newcastle, Stamford, Wellingborough, Great Yarmouth, Tiverton, Falmouth, Brighton, London & Belfast. After 45minutes cleaning a quartile, which turned up 2 sharps, 63 bits of plastic, 3 plastic straws and over 15 plastic lollipop sticks, our group spent an hour cleaning the rest of the foreshore. 47 of 70 plastic bottles were water identifiable as water bottles! Good news! A team of scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois (US) have found a way to break down the bonds that make polyethylene. Polyethylene is one of the most common types of plastic. We find it many household products like plastic bags, bottles, etc. The process cuts the plastic polymer turning it into liquid oil. It does that through a catalytic technique using metal nanoparticles to chop the polymer apart. This liquid oil can then be used for other purposes, like lubricant, and scientists are looking into other potential uses. The strong bonds that make polyethylene are what makes plastic so durable. It is why plastic never degrades. The Motion was lost and I called for a division (noted in the minutes who voted for and against). So who voted For Cr Carli Hannan’s Amendment for keeping WEEKLY garbage and recycling collection? Cr Annalivia Carli Hannan Cr Oscar Yildiz Cr Lambros Tapinos Cr John Kavanagh Cr Sue Bolton We then went back to the Substantive Motion (the original) and 9 Councillors voted for, while Cr Carli Hannan and I abstained (we declined to vote). Basically Councillors voted to cut your waste collection of red and yellow bins from weekly to fortnightly collection. No doubt we do more than just rates, roads and rubbish but one of the most fundamental tangible services we provide is the weekly collection of your bins. Anna and I are not against recycling and reducing waste but we are realistic and acknowledge that Moreland is not ready for fortnightly collections. COVID-19 has changed the way we work and as we spend more time at home we are creating more waste. Our bin lids are barely closing while some residents hope their neighbours bins are half full on bin night. The increasing volume of waste is posing a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. It is estimated that by 2025, 2.2 billion tons of solid waste will be generated in cities alone. Inefficient waste management - ranging from non-existing collection systems to ineffective disposal - causes air pollution, water and soil contamination. Open and unsanitary landfills contribute to contamination of drinking water and can cause infection and transmit diseases. The dispersal of debris pollutes ecosystems and dangerous substances from electronic waste or industrial garbage puts a strain on the health of urban dwellers and the environment. As we go about our everyday life, it is important to ensure minimisation of waste. Where waste cannot be avoided, recovery of materials and energy from waste as well as remanufacturing and recycling waste into usable products should be the second option. Recycling leads to substantial resource savings. For example, for every tonne of paper recycled, 17 trees and 50 per cent of water can be saved. A CHOICE study has found many Australian pharmacists are recommending alternative medicines that have little to no scientific evidence to prove their effectiveness. The consumer advocacy group got mystery shoppers to visit 240 pharmacies and ask the pharmacist if they could recommend anything to help relieve stress. “When a pharmacist was asked if there was something they could recommend for stress, worryingly 26 per cent of pharmacists recommended products based on Bach flower remedies and 3 per cent recommended homoeopathic products, for which there is no evidence of effectiveness,” said CHOICE Head of Media, Tom Godfrey. A SCHOOL in #Solihull has closed just weeks into the new term, owing to accelerating coronavirus infections. Arden Academy in Knowle has sent pupils home for the next fortnight, after staff and pupils across year groups contracted Covid-19. Mamoona Tahir, Public Health England Midlands consultant in disease control said: “We are working closely with Arden Academy to provide public health advice to help prevent the spread of the virus. With the help of the school we have identified staff and children who were close contacts of the confirmed cases and they must now self-isolate for 14 days from last exposure to avoid unknowingly spreading the virus. “The school management have taken all the measures they could to protect children and staff from catching the virus. They have implemented government guidance to the letter, undertaking careful assessments and reviewing the control measures in place when they were notified of new cases of coronavirus. “It is the joint decision to close the site and ask children to access their learning remotely, the reasons are two-fold. There is a need to try to break the chain of Covid-19 infection in the school community, which if left unchecked would result in more infected individuals, a protracted outbreak and a longer period of closure. Also, having assessed available staffing levels, there is concern regarding having sufficient resources to implement current guidelines and safely support pupil learning and wellbeing.” Martin Murphy, the Arden Multi Academy Trust CEO, said: “This has been a difficult decision to make and we realise the upset and inconvenience this will cause. However, the health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff and wider community are our priority. “Our hope is that by closing the school now, we can press the reset button and start back in two weeks’ time infection free. I can assure you that we will continue to be guided by Public Health and will do everything possible to avoid a school closure in the future. Danas je u Gradskoj četvrti Podsljeme predsjednica uprave @zg_holding Ana Stojić Deban u rad pustila mobilno reciklažno dvorište „Podsljeme“. Građanima je tako omogućeno , da bez naknade, radnim danom i subotom od 6,30 do 20,00 sati mogu predati više od 30 različitih vrsta otpada. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ S radom je krenulo deveto po redu mobilno reciklažno dvorište, Prilaz Kraljičinom zdencu kod kućnog broja 4. Ukupno u Zagrebu imamo 20 reciklažnih dvorišta, od čega je devet mobilnih i jedanaest fiksnih. Grad Zagreb ispunio je zakonsku obvezu, da svaka gradska četvrt ima barem jedno reciklažno dvorište. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ U mobilnom reciklažnom dvorištu otpad koji su građani odvojili u kućanstvu se privremeno skladišti, u njima se ne obavlja obrada sakupljenog otpada pa aktivnosti postupanja s otpadom ne završavaju tamo već podrazumijevaju češća pražnjenja i odvoz razvrstanih vrsta kojeg u konačnici uporabljuju ovlaštene tvrtke. A new enzyme ‘cocktail’ could help tackle plastic waste and recycling issues.⁠ ⁠ A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth in England have developed a new “super enzyme” that can break down plastics up to six times faster than standard enzymes, according to a new research paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. ⁠ This combination of enzymes can speed up the decomposition process for the most common thermoplastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in single-use bottles, carpets, and clothing. This thermoplastic usually takes hundreds of years to degrade in the environment, but the new enzyme compound takes only days to convert it back to its building blocks.⁠ ⁠ Scientists hope this new discovery could improve the recycling process by reducing the need to make new plastic out of fossil fuels.⁠ - @cheddar on Instagram
