The jurors later wrote that “her pickles and sauces have a piquancy and flavor seldom equaled, and,⠀ when once tasted, not soon forgotten.”⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the end of the Civil War she and her family gained their freedom. In 1877 the Fishers relocated from Mobile to San Francisco where her talents as a cook⠀ and caterer were in high demand by the rich. Her reputation and award winning delicacies enabled the Fishers to open their own⠀ business listed in the San Francisco directories as “Mrs. Abby Fisher & Company” and later as “Mrs. Abby Fisher, Pickle Manufacturer.” Abby Fisher expertly blended African and American cultures by combining the foods and spices from two continents. LO STRETTO NECESSARIO cit. . Linfanzia trascorsa con le mie nonne è forse il periodo più importante della mia vita. Loro mi hanno insegnato e dato tanto ma soprattutto, vivendo lontano, mi hanno messo nella condizione di vivere il viaggio fin da quando ho memoria. Come tutti i figli di immigrati meridionali infatti, sono nata e cresciuta al nord Italia ma con gli usi e costumi del sud. 🍅🍅🍅🍅 Questa fotografia fu scattata da mio padre nei primi del 90 e ritrae la sottoscritta e la più cara amica della mia nonna paterna. La signora parlava un dialetto napoletano che oggigiorno non sento più, arcaico, molto posato e che soprattutto veniva dalla cultura di campagna. Lei e mia nonna infatti erano contadine ed allevatrici di animali e vivevano la terra in maniera molto particolare. Per esempio trovavano e conoscevano rimedi naturali utilizzando erbe e preghiere come gli sciamani delle culture primitive, cose che oggigiorno verrebbero scambiate per ciarlataneria o pacchianeria. Quello che in realtà io ho trovato sempre affascinante era il modo di cucinare e preparare quello che la campagna dava, frutto di tradizioni centenarie che oramai sono perse nel tempo. Oggi giorno capisco la loro pazienza nellaspettare il momento giusto per ogni cosa. 🥖🥖🥖🥖 Inoltre, questa foto per me è importante perché mi ricorda quando da piccola aiutavo mia nonna a cucinare e accudire le gallinelle di casa. Raccoglievo le uova, pulivo il fienile e se ero stanca, mi addormentavo con la testa sul corpo piumoso di unenorme oca bianca che avevo chiamato Nuvola e che si faceva avvicinare solo da me. . Historia de la Reina Pepiada, es la arepa más famosa del país. Su receta original dice que es una tostada rellena de pollo guisado y luego horneado, acompañado de lonjas de aguacate y granos de petit pois. Actualmente, los establecimientos la rellenan con ensalada de gallina, mayonesa y aguacate. Su creador aún está vivo, se llama Heriberto Álvarez, tiene 86 años y es nativo de Las Araujas, una población del estado Trujillo. La autoría de la Reina Pepiada no es sólo mía sino también de mis seis hermanos ya fallecidos y por supuesto, de mi ingeniosa madre: María de los Santos Álvarez, que en paz descanse. Todo comenzó cuando mi papá murió, estando nosotros muy jóvenes. Mi mamá nos trasladó desde Trujillo para Caracas en un camión de estacas. Nos instalamos en la Esquina de Cola e Pato, en El Guarataro. Allí montamos un negocio de empanadas. Se hicieron tan famosas que la gente se venía desde El Paraíso, expresamente, a probarlas. Como nos fue tan bien pudimos abrir otro local de Maderero a Bucare, cerca de la Plaza Miranda. Mis hermanos y yo le pusimos El Chance. Fue allí donde vendimos las primeras tostadas. Nuestro primer cliente se acercó a las 8:30 de la mañana, en octubre del año 49. Nos preguntó: Muchachos, ¿qué es eso de tostadas?. Le explicamos que así se le decía a la arepa rellenita en Trujillo. Pidió una de queso de mano y se la devoró gustosamente. En ese momento se llamaba Alfredo Sánchez, vivía a una cuadra del negocio y era un aficionado al canto. Después se convirtió en Alfredo Sadel. Imagínese qué suerte nos dio ese señor de ser el primero que se comiera una de nuestras arepas. El origen del nombre Con el tiempo fuimos creciendo y en el año 55, abrimos Los Hermanos Álvarez en La Gran Avenida, la que comunica Plaza Venezuela con Sabana Grande. Estábamos en un punto estratégico, porque teníamos al lado la hermosa floristería de las hermanas Belloso y un negocio muy visitado que se llamaba Todo París. Nuestros clientes fijos eran Aquiles Nazoa, Oscar Yanes, Billo Frómeta y Abelardo Raidi, entre otros. Ese mismo año, la señorita Susana Duijm ganó el Miss Mundo. 1904 ST. LOUIS EXPO: The ice cream cone made an unexpected debut at Expo, a concept born by chance between two neighboring food vendors at the fair. When an ice cream vendor ran out of serving dishes, a concessionaire selling waffle-like pastries rolled up one of his desserts into the shape of a cone as a quick solution.
