It all starts with a vision. Spent the day hand hammering (peening) the steel stock into arrowheads for these ten siblings have been made from the same black walnut tree cut from two 2 slabs. The only thing I did to treat this is applied a coat of boiled linseed oil and they look wonderful!!! I have been shaping and sanding these to a nice finish. I cut whitetail deer antler beads,which I will carve with haudenosaunee designs and adorn with eagle like feathers. Should be ready in a couple of weeks big anyone is interested. I will complete all and take pictures then offer up for sale after keeping a few for our own protection. Today I took a quick trip up the hill behind the workshop to take some pictures of this little axe. It was once a small firemans axe, but I thing it will work perfectly for harvesting roots for crafts, as illustrated in one of the pictures. I really liked the langets and the ring, ot made the whole process a little different, and fun. Sweat and other moisture can be rough on 1095 steel. But surface rust is nothing to get worked up over. A Brillo pad and little elbow grease usually takes care of it. If you want to avoid it altogether, coat the blade lightly with a food safe oil. A little forge therapy after a frustrating day of working on the van. Pounding on hot steel always helps get the stress out! This is a custom order for a friend. Started as a 1 x .250 bar of 80CrV2. Forged out to 1.4 wide at the widest and thinned down to .150 on the spine. 4-1/4lb Collins legitimus Jersey. On what I think is the original helve though it isnt marked. Its 33 and has excellent grain orientation. I filed this one to a hair over 22.5°. Fresh set just finished on Commission. #craftsman 1¾lb on the original 16 handle rehung with a fresh soft wedge. The #bigaxe stared as a M 3½ Jersey pattern. We wanted to make them a matching set. I also needed to bring the weight down to 2¼lb with a full 4⅝ scoring blade, so we started big! This bigaxe head came out as #perfect as perfect can get! The head weighs in at exactly 2lb 4.0oz. Im pretty proud of that. The handle is #American #hickory, trimmed to exactly 25, artistic grain burn, sealed with @axewax, Dark Walnut wedge curtsey of @therealjohnbradley and I topped it off with a couple @tacofasteners_ steel barrel wedges. Both heads were finished in the same fashion. Satin to polished brush on the poll. Of course we cant forget about my personal Throwfile that graces both of these beautiful axes. Esta pieza de forja es 100% funcional, no fue realizada por corte y desbaste, si no por forja tradicional. Working with reclaimed timber from @southamptonwoodrecycling today - each piece has been salvaged from being sent to landfill by this wonderful social enterprise. This wood had some splashes of tar which required a bit of manual sanding to remove. I spent yesterday in Chattanooga at a spoon 🥄 carving event that my friend Michael of #earth_for_learing and I road down to. Brian of #tenneseespoon hosted the gathering. I took more pictures I thought but when I was looking for them to post all I had was these few that Michael took. Brian was gracious and took me through his methods of spoon carving for which Im very greatfull. He is one of the best at spoon carving I know. My late grandmother, Aglok’s ulu (pronounced Aarluk). She passed long before I was born, but she is who I’m named for ❤️ My mom thinks that this ulu is at least 50-60 years old. But it’s not a decoration, we still use it (respectfully) in our kitchen and when out on the land. The handle was made & replaced by my late honourary grandpa and cabin neighbour, the Elder Hayokhok, who passed away this past spring. My mom said he always kept her ulus sharp. Some more random pictures from this summer: A Daskebackare! This Hjärtum axe, forged by Johan Jonsson some time early in the last century, is a treasure. It belongs to @ravhol, a friend of mine who was part of this summers building crew. These axes are gold for any collector, and is regarded as the best axes to ever come out of Sweden. And especially when they reach this size, it will put the best black ravens in the shadow. Axe Edge Maintenance: This Sport Utility double-bit axe was used to free-up a splitting wedge, that was stuck inside of an Oak round, with some large limb-knots. The axe was sacrificed for the greater good, to keep the work-flow moving along. :) Here are some photos showing the work progression, mostly using a draw-file technique to take out the damage, set the bevel, and bring back the edge.
