My mom was diagnosed with MS while I was still in high school. I watched helplessly as the disease took away her mobility and her livelihood as a cook. But despite how much it took away, it never took her sense of humour or love for food. We are honored to be able to celebrate her and her passion for good food and good company by participating in the MS Society’s #savourfestival. A great quote from Sir Harry Wigley’s book ’Ski-Plane Adventure’ in 1956 below, that we still agree with and has taken us to bigger and better things: “When conditions were good it permitted a certain amount of flying to be done with the visitors to The Hermitage. The enthusiasm of these passengers for our flights into the glaciers was tremendous and even the ones who started off a little nervously were enraptured by the fairyland into which they stepped so soon after taking off from the grass of The Hermitage airfield. - My long hair phase in the 90’s
The very first time that Jeremy and I visited Colorado Springs, we drove Gold Camp Road on a cold, foggy September morning. I can still remember what was playing on our 1984 Chevy Cavalier’s stereo (the Christian group FFH, if you want to know). That was 2003, before maps and Google were at our fingertips, and we drove in circles trying to figure out why on earth we kept getting turned off of Gold Camp Road when our atlas clearly showed that it went all the way to Cripple Creek. Turns out, due to a tunnel that collapsed in the 80s, there’s a long stretch of Gold Camp that’s closed to vehicles and if you want to drive Gold Camp from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek, you have to take a slight detour from part 1 to part 2. I’ve been curious about that closed stretch of road ever since, and finally, after 13 years of living in the Springs, I finally got out and explored it with our 12yo daughter last week! #coloradosprings #goldcamproad #mountainbiking #coloradospringsmtb #coloradobackroads - @circa_group on Instagram
I’ve been thinking a lot about earlier generations of my family, what hardships they faced and how they got through. My maternal grandmother, Marcelle Antony, was the same age (14) as my daughter @sabineadelia is now when the Spanish flu wiped out tens of millions of people around the globe. My mother doesn’t recall her ever talking about that pandemic, but she did speak often about the Great Depression, in many ways the defining chapter of her life. When the stock market crashed she was 25, her father had recently passed and she’d become the legal guardian of her young sister, about 10 years her junior, stepping in when her grieving mother could no longer cope. Within 2 years, she had married my grandfather and somehow they made it through that difficult time (he was an obstetrician and extended credit to a lot of families—he joked that he always knew someone was pregnant when they suddenly settled up the bill for the last baby). They started a family of their own in the late 1930s, just before he was shipped off to Europe during WW2. She lived a very long and happy life, and through it all remained a positive and loving presence in our lives (not to mention an incredible baker of pies). As we go through this ordeal I have a million questions for her. I think she’d offer reassuring words, remind me that we have to focus on the things we can take care of, don’t let worry overtake common sense, stick together and carry on until things get better. Peugeot 504 coupé and cabriolet, two beautiful cars, designed and produced by Pininfarina. These cars were produced between 1969 and 1983. At that time 26.600 coupés and 8.200 cabriolets were sold. In the beginning the cars were equipped with the 1800 cc 4-cylinder-engine from the ordinary 504, but later replaced by a 2700 cc 6-cylinder-engine. On page 2 you see the version after the facelift (in 1974), on page 3 the first version. In 1971 Pininfarina introduced a shooting brake based on the 504 coupé, called Riviera (see page 4). Unfortunately it remained with one copy and production was abandoned. In 2018 Peugeot introduced the E-Legend, an electric retro-version of the 504 Coupé (see the last page). Unfortunately it will also be limited to one here. Certainly, people dont just uproot their entire lives and abandon their homes if circumstances werent dire. My parents fled Vietnam in April 1979. They didnt know their future fate but they did know they had each other and that was enough. Somehow they weathered that tumultuous journey and ended up in Pulau Bidong, Malaysia where they spent 14 months in a refugee camp. I was born right before we made our way to Fort Dodge, Iowa in June 1980. Were posing in front of the Impala my dad bought for $600 from his first job - a proud day, we took lots of photos. Funny enough, my dads favorite song at the time was Coming to America by Neil Young. It wasnt long before we moved to Los Angeles and my dad became an engineer working for various airlines to provide for our family of six. Recently, he opened up to us about his true love of music. It was a shock to us when it happened but my dad now sings in a vọng cổ band (Vietnamese chamber music) with his friends and occasionally has gigs on local Vietnamese television. Were all very supportive and love seeing that hes getting a chance to express himself. And yes, he definitely has an affinity for nhạc trẻ (youths music) aka NEW WAVE. 1. 30 years ago, my Grandmother took delivery of her very first Range Rover, a 1990 Beluga Black County shown above. I don’t think she would have ever thought that 30 years later, she’d be buying her 8th one. If she hadn’t taken a chance on the low-volume, obscure British SUV, I know I would not be accepting a job at Jaguar Land Rover Princeton as their Encore and Marketing Specialist, as I am today. It’s a start that I hope will lead to a long career with Jaguar Land Rover and possibly, one day, to JLR corporate. 2 kids that fell in-love. Had no clue that LOVE would bring them this far. Went through it all. Broke up for 21/2 years thinking we were completely done. But LOVE wouldn’t let us “live”. Is gold a colour or a finish? Way back in time the effect of gold on a surface was achieved using ‘gold leaf’, real gold hammered to a thickness of 5 microns or about 1/8,000mm; that’s thin and it’s why a craftsman can lay it on any object. The technique goes back thousands of years. It wasn’t until the 1930s that cars were first painted gold, but only to special order. It seems that as paint technology became more sophisticated, gold became more over the top as a paint finish. The the arrival of ‘wraps’ as the final layer means that the customer can have as hideous an effect as his lack of taste can dream of. The gold paint on the Summers Brothers World Record holder ‘Goldenrod’ looked at its best under the harsh bright light of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Whilst 1970s gold like the Buick Electra 225 can show the form of that period of American car to perfection, Art Fitzpatrick could always be relied on to illustrate gold Pontiacs in all their splendour while real gold bars show how differently gold reflects light. Gil Alaya was one of the earliest customisers to experiment with metallic paint colours, one of the very few images of his Mercury built for Jonny Rosier show a gold and dark blue paint job which looks very cool. But a Rose Gold wrapped Lambo ……… well! Illustrator Paul Dove has a fine technique for painting something as dramatic as Henry Segrave’s ‘Golden Arrow’ Land Speed record car, and there is no doubt that the robot R2D2 took a shine to C3PO; I’m not sure that gold furniture would be to either’s taste but maybe the simple gold Corvette could have been. #c3po #gilalaya #artfitzpatrick #goldenrodrecords #goldenarrowhead - @peterstevensdesign on Instagram
