You should really come see these large scale pieces by @jodilightner in person at Toucan before they come down next week. I (Mark) have always been particularly moved by these architecturally motivated pieces because of my own background in architecture. They represent an otherworldly “architecture” to me, the representation of spatial constructs that while not needing to respond to the physical constraint of gravity that “real” architecture does, somehow do respond to the very real human need for a place to put human things, things like longing and angst, memories and hope. This is architecture that transcends the real in order to transport a viewer to an unconscious reckoning with whatever it is they yearn for, for better or worse, and if they will only open themselves up to it. We have smaller pieces on display and available, as well, if you want this experience to follow you home. They all speak, every one of them. Today, Kunsthalle Lingen is opening the exhibition “Grundrisse” with our artist Susa Templin. The complex work “Liquid Crystal Labyrinth” is a photo installation, whose transparent image carriers hang from the ceiling, creating a luminous atmosphere of light and colour. The artist, working with analogue photography, seemingly deconstructs and distorts photographed space with a multiple exposure technique and thereby creates new abstract spaces, reminiscent of memories. One step closer to self sufficiency! 🐄💚💪 . This month we have been installing our straw burner on the farm. . Our recent expansions have meant that we’ve become more reliant on the national grid in the past couple of years. All the water heating required for cheesemaking sucks a hell of a lot of juice as it turns out. . That’s not cool in our books, so we decided to do something about it. . This baby is fed on waste straw, which is a by-product of local food production. . It will heat 44,000 litres of water to 90 degrees, feeding our offices, cheese building, butter building, milking parlour and all of the family and employee homes on the farm. . This new gadget will provide around 40% of our energy needs. A further 30% comes from solar power, 5% from cow poo power and on top of this, we’ve rigged up a nifty little system for collecting all the waste heat generated by our many refrigeration and milk cooling units. The adaptive reuse project spans nearly 48,000-square-feet of a previously underutilized building.
