Repost from @hankwillisthomas • This Saturday, October 3, 2020, marks the 160th anniversary of the Wide Awakes Grand Procession for emancipation. In 1860, the #WideAwakes, a group of young abolitionists who advocated for the election of Abraham Lincoln, held massive torchlight parades around the country—in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Cleveland—banding together to ensure the freedom of enslaved peoples. Inspired by the 1860 Wide Awakes, @wideawakes2020 takes a cue from this band of abolitionist dreamers and widens the lens. On October 3, #WideAwakesDay, our global grand procession will celebrate joy and civic participation, online and in cities across the world. Find out how you can get involved at WideAwakes.com 👁 - @sankofadotorg on Instagram

By the time Germany surrendered in May of 1945—and Japan on September 2nd later that year—troops, nurses, and people around the world were ready for the terrible conflict of WWII to come to an end. For the 7.6 million U.S. soldiers stationed abroad, roughly 6 million of them would come home over the next year. “Operation Magic Carpet” began in September, 1945, with the aim to bring soldiers home to the open arms of friends and family. The massive demobilization effort took longer than anyone would like, and continued well into 1946. Since all resources had been dedicated to winning the war, not much planning had started for bringing troops home. One goal that soldiers in particular had, was to “make it home for Christmas.” As the holiday grew closer, the U.S. Army and Navy launched “Operation Santa Claus” to expedite the return of the troops. Because of this initiative, over 250,000 military personnel were rushed home, facing inclement weather and stormy seas. Once they arrived on American soil, they were met with shocking traffic and travel delays. A majority of these soldiers had traveled so far only to be stuck a few states away from making it home for Christmas. However, civilians banded together to gift returning servicemen and women train tickets, and many volunteered to miss Christmas with their own families in order to drive or hold parties for these veterans who had layovers or were stuck in transit. After years of toiling and fighting, many soldiers were just happy to be back home for the holidays. In honor of the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII, honor and remember all those who fought for their country. Find your connection to WWII on Ancestry®. - @ancestry_dna on Instagram

September #shortdresshistorystory month for our school. STORY No.1 ‘My First Dress History Book’ - When I was 12 years old I decided I wanted to be a costume designer in the theatre. My first ‘book’ on the subject of dress history was due to the fact that both my parent drank huge quantities of Brooke Bond tea, so I could collect all the picture cards that came, one at a time, inside every packet of tea they bought. It is not surprising that this tiny book on British costume is full of good information because the texts were written by Madeleine Ginsburg, a founder member of the Costume Society and curator of textiles and dress at the V&A, who passed away recently at the age of 91 (obituary from Costume Society newsletter shown). Scroll through these images to see the back page of the book where ‘Things To Do While You Collect The Cards’ still offers some good suggestions and the ‘Selected Book List’ includes Janet Arnold’s ‘Patterns of Fashion Volume 1’. We’re celebrating Pride today with this wonderful photograph of Vita and Harold from our archive. They married in 1913 and maintained a loving and respectful relationship until Vita’s death in 1962. Their letters and biographies reveal that both had numerous same-sex relationships outside their marriage during their life together. On Vita’s part this included some serious relationships – most famously, those with Violet Trefusis and Virginia Woolf. Their marriage may sound unconventional but it was not uncommon among their peers during this time period, when Harold might even have been imprisoned for being gay. At Sissinghurst Castle we aim to tell Vita and Harold’s story openly and celebrate our place in LGBTQ+ heritage. . . . Harriet Tubman, notable conductor on the underground railroad, maintained strong ties to Boston throughout her life. Visiting the city numerous times, Tubman often met with abolitionists and women’s rights activists alike. The Liberator noted her participation in Boston suffrage events as early as 1860, when Tumban, called ‘Moses,’ attended a woman’s rights convention and “told the story of her adventures in a modest but quaint and amusing style, which won much applause.” The Woman’s Journal also recorded several occasions local suffragists welcomed Tubman. An April 1897 edition of the publication recounted a reception presided over by Ednah D. Cheney in which many people connected to both the abolitionist and suffrage movements attended. Tubman’s words reflecting on her life, The Journal observed, “left her hearers feeling braver and braver.” #SuffrageSaturday #HarrietTubman #VotesForWomen #Suffragent #NPS19th #19thAmendment #UndergroundRailroad #UGRR #UGRRMonth Sources: “Woman’s Rights Meetings,” The Liberator, July 06, 1860. MY CHILDHOOD... MY REFUGE TODAY  My childhood was so full of fun, laughter and of course dance in abundance. My parents were my quiet and strongest support then. My respectful gratitude to CLT (Childrens Little Theatre) - to Samar da , Suresh da , Kanai da, Kanishka da, Prafulla da and everybody else there for grooming me into a free spirited dancer.  How can i ever forget Manjulika di for holding my hand and bringing me into the world of traditional dance forms of India? And my school Modern High School where I learnt ballet and remember performing as the Parrot in Parrots Training (Tagores Tota Kahini). I was thoroughly pampered by Mrs. Wilson De Roze and Mrs. Clarke. I was then in class four.  I now realise how ballet has influenced my dance style and movements.  I also remember as a child when I was in St Johns Diocesan School, how I would fall asleep on the principals sofa till the seniors were ready for rehearsals. I was in KG 2 then.  How could I not grow up to be a dancer and to love dance with so much support from such people? And of course the tremendous support of my parents, family, husband and my children. . . . . . . . . #alokanandaroy #alokananda #alaknanda #chandanaloke #touchworld #inspirationfoundation #dance #therapy #transform #transformation #music #performingarts #art #lovetherapy #india #westbengal #kolkata #youth # #india #balley #stories #CLT #childhood #memories - @alokanandaroy on Instagram

In 1912 the magazine Mother Earth covered an uprising in San Diego, highlighting a free-speech movement (the San Diego Free Speech Fight) that was in response to the right-wing militia/police counter-movement that had an overwhelming influence on culture at the time. Emma Goldman, upon learning of this struggle, made her way from New York, passing through the turbulent Chicago, and landed in Los Angeles, setting her sight on the smaller-city-cousin which was SD. There had been many years of demonstration, mostly in the form of the old “soap-box” oratory, which had been the thorn in the side of the old guard of conservative gatekeepers. This division came to a head in 1912, fueled by disagreement in labor unionization with the IWW. Coupled with the negation in respect for the working-class, and culminating in the insistence upon the “boot-strap” success culture so prevalent in early California at the time, division and strife was unfurled. The old-guard got wind of Goldman traveling by train to SD from LA and was intercepted by police. She was apprehended. Her companion was too. He was held and tortured by the police, with the help of an armed militia, and was beaten so severely until near death. The crime was information. Informing the masses of the exploitation precededing and awaiting the working people. Emma Goldman was never to see the soap-box oratory of San Diego (nor the melee that was altogether happening a mere few miles south of where she was heading). She was left with an idea and a promise. This instance, one that has spanned many years(incomprehensible in today’s short-term attention span world), lives on today. It’s clear in the ways in which our governance functions, our justice systems runs, our policing is frought with violence and suspicion. Let us gather the wisdom of our forebearers to recognize injustice that preceded us and may succeed us if a change is not insisted upon. Let us head the call of those before and those now whom take up ideas and strength and brevity and arms to make these changes just, viable and possible. - @jacobean____ on Instagram

Did you know that the first NFL game was played here in Dayton, Ohio, nearly 100 years ago?
The Dayton Triangles were a semi-pro football team, most of whose players had regular jobs and played football on the weekends for fun and little money. They were the successor to other teams in our area when formed in 1916 with the backing of three General Motors Companies controlled by industrialists, Colonel Edward Deeds and Charles Kettering, who had also purchased the land that became known as Triangle Park, for their employees recreation, and provided a field for the football team. On September 17, 1920, at a meeting of semi-pro teams held in Hays Hupmobile Automobile dealership in Canton, Ohio, the America Professional Football Association was founded. The Dayton Triangles were one of the first 4 teams to join the Association. The first game played between 2 league teams was played at Triangle Park on October 3, 1920, a game in which the Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles, 14 to 0. The first touchdown scored in the new Association was by Lou Partlow George “Hobby” Kinderline kicked the first point after. Their manager, Carl Storck, participated in the formation of the league at the Canton meeting. In 1921 he was named league secretary-treasurer; and in 1939 he became president of the NFL. In 1922, the Association, now with 12 member teams changed their name to the National Football League. Attendance at games played at Triangle Park was in the 2,000-5,000 range. As the league grew the Triangles would frequently travel by train to play teams that included the Chicago Bears, The NY Giants, and the Green Bay Packers. The growth of teams in large cities had much to do with the eventual financial failure of the Triangles. In 1929 they were sold to the Brooklyn Dodgers. #daytonhistory #carillonpark #daytontriangles #triangles #football #trianglepark #daytonohio #professionalfootball #history #historicfootball #team #historicfootballteam #teammerchandise #merchandise #support #teamsupport #anniversary #100years #100thanniversary #century #centuryanniversary - @daytonhistory on Instagram

Did you know that some of the earliest stewards of the nation’s national parks were soldiers from segregated black regiments? The national park system came to be after growing concern to preserve the natural landscape, including protecting timber, lakes, wildlife, and the genocidal displacement of native peoples prevailed. However, securing these new parks and vast terrains became a problem. The solution fell to troops stationed at forts and bases located near the parks. In the 1890s, the Buffalo Soldiers, who had fought in the Indian and Spanish American Wars, added park ranger to their titles. and played a critical role in protecting and building the infrastructure of the country’s vast public lands. To provide the much needed security. Approximately 500 Buffalo Soldiers served as Park Rangers at Yosemite, Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, in 1899, 1903 and 1904. Their duties, which were the same as white regiments, included evicting timber thieves, putting out forest fires and building roads and trails. Today we celebrate #blackinnationalparksweek and we commemorate these and other early Park System stewards. #blackinnationalparks #diversity #equity #inclusion #livetheparkslife #history #blackhistory Pictured Below: Buffalo soldiers of the 25th Infantry, some wearing buffalo robes, Ft. Repost from my cousin @jpthe3 ! A little Plummer family history to celebrate Juneteenth! This is my great great great grandfather, Adam Francis Plummer (1819-1905), sitting amongst his children. He was enslaved at the Riversdale Plantation (@riversdalehousemuseum) and his enslavers were George Calvert (descendent of Lord Baltimore, who settled Maryland) and Rosalie Stier Calvert. He was later enslaved by their son Charles Benedict Calvert (founder of the University of Maryland @univofmaryland). Adam learned how to read/write from a Black preacher and Adam’s diary, one of the only written accounts from someone while still enslaved, is now on display at the Smithsonian. Adam would walk 15 miles every weekend to visit his wife Emily Saunders Plummer (1815-1876) and their kids on a separate plantation. They weren’t reunited until they were freed in 1864. Once freed, Adam saved up enough money to buy 10 acres of land, start his own farm, and build his own house. Adam’s son Nicholas Saunders Plummer, my great great grandfather, eventually built his first house on the property with a $1,000 loan from Frederick Douglas. My great grandfather, Rudolph Plummer grew up in this house. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those enslaved in the U.S. My family is fortunate that our history is recorded in Adam’s diary. We are alive today because of the tenacity of Adam & Emily Plummer, despite the hardships created by their enslavers (who are still being celebrated today). Nashville first became known internationally as Music City not for its country music, but because of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.⁣ ⁣ The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years.⁣ ⁣ Without musical accompaniment, the a cappella troupe has sung as if the very survivability of Fisk University depended upon them. ⁣ ⁣ Follow the link in our bio to read the full story. ⁣ #BPM2020 - @communityfoundationmidtn on Instagram

Deep in the forests of Wallowa County, Oregon, was Maxville. Founded by the Missouri-based Bowman-Hicks Lumber Company in 1923, it was unlike most logging towns in the Pacific Northwest in that it allowed Black people to work and live among White people. ‪•‬ Alongside White men, Black men hewed timber and raised their families in the same area despite Oregon’s exclusionary law, which, until its repeal in 1926, prohibited Blacks from residing in the state. This law specified that “it shall not be lawful for any negro or mulatto to enter into, or reside” in Oregon, with exceptions made for those who were already in the territory. ‪•‬
By the mid-1920s, Maxville blossomed into a community of 400 citizens becoming the largest town in the county. The town contained a post office, medical dispensary, company store, hotel, and a blacksmith. While logging in the woodlands, the men intermixed, but Jim Crow laws were enforced once back in town. In leisure, baseball brought them all together as they played on both segregated and integrated teams, which even led them to a tournament win. ‪•‬
Toward the ‘30s, the Great Depression ravaged the lumber industry, contributing to the town’s decline, which led to Maxville’s eventually closing in 1933. Residents migrated to neighboring states, albeit some lingered. A blizzard years later destroyed the remaining structures and saw the last people leave. ‪•‬
However, what has been a ghost town since will now have its memory maintained in posterity thanks to the efforts pioneered by Gwen Trice, a descendant of one of the original Black loggers, and founder of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center in Joseph, Oregon. ‪•‬ Read the full story of those spirited loggers in the Filson Journal. Cabinet Card, mid 1880s This photo can be dated by a number of features. First, the slim fit and cropped length of her sleeve place it in the 1880s. The draped overskirt, too, is a solid clue that it’s from the 1880s. In the early years of the 80s, dress silhouettes were quite slim, with a long basque that fit closely over the hips. This dress has a short basque and the width of the hips are exaggerated by the overskirt. While we cannot see a bustle, this wider silhouette is a good indication that she has one. The bustle reappeared in 1883 and reached its apogee in 1886. This photo was likely taken during that time. Another clue to note is the asymmetrical drape of her overskirt. In the early years of the 80s, fashion dictated symmetry. When the bustle returned, however, asymmetry became the order of the day and stayed the norm for the duration of the decade. The custom, “natural” scenery is another hallmark of the 1880s, as is the script imprint. . #cabinetcard #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturyphotos #datingphotos #genealogyresearch #victorianfashion #1880sfashion #wccresearchlibrary #costumehistory #costumeresearch #fashionhistory #2ndbustleperiod - @westerncostumecompany on Instagram

🙏🙏🙏 - @kharlamovm on Instagram
