Have you ever thought about why women are missing in history? Historical sources reflect the power dynamics of the past, so its not surprising that womens voices and perspectives were often ignored or lost in documents created by men. And women often lacked the time, resources, and social standing to write and preserve their own experiences. Were not sure why Seraph Young Fords name was misspelled on her headstone in @arlingtonnatl, but were glad that error has now been corrected after more than 80 years. Thank you to everyone who helped us uncover her story and and recognize her place in history! #tbt #UtahWomenMakeHistory #womenshistory 💜💛💜 - @betterdays2020 on Instagram

After a fruitful few years of learning how to run and operate a design studio, it’s with the utmost excitement and pleasure that we announce that, well, we’re done. As a studio, we have always strived to make honest and interesting work for clients and ourselves. (You can see some of that work here: bit.ly/hire-hawraf) We started the studio because we wanted to learn. And learn we did. We had the immense privilege of learning everything from the fine art of proposal writing to creating identity systems that react to music. And we tried to share what we learned, too. As a final takeaway, please enjoy our Google Drive, scrubbed of all the stuff that would get us sued, but still a sizeable chunk of documents of varying levels of usefulness. It represents the tools we used and created for ourselves along the way and we hope it can provide some insight for anyone who might be curious about this stuff, too: https://drive.google.com/…/1wBlDBNJI3h1KL-jeFqGiRr1U3OZDBQkV (Linked on HAWRAF.com, but we’ll link it in Stories, too!) . Thank you to everyone who was a part of it, either by working with us, paying us, believing in us or some combination of the aforementioned. My Mother’s Day appreciation post. I don’t typically makes these type of posts... ever, but today I need to make mention of someone who deserves so much more than a post... We all have a story, so much so that I have an entire page dedicated to the story before mine, and one story I’ve yet to share is my fathers. In time I will share what this man has endured, what he fought for, what he sacrificed, what he has taught me and still continues to do so everyday, what he values & Always his integrity and what he stands for. I realize there is a Father’s Day for these sorts of things, but I’m breaking the rules because just like the story of Nelly surviving on a farm alone, raising her children to be strong and resilient, our story repeated itself in a way & my father raised three children of his own by himself. He raised three children alone on the same farm Nelly raised her children on alone. Amazing what our story has taught us to be strong, to hang on, to keep fighting because you have to, you must simply keep going, and that because of Nelly & my father we have our farm today. Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful mothers out there, near & far... today I celebrate the only “mother” I’ve ever known. My dad, Doug ✨ #exposure#kodak#kodakfilm#old#oldphotos#photography#postcard#farming#vintage#film#vintagephotograph#exposure#kodak#kodakfilm#saskatchewan#photooftheday#1800s#1900s#victorian#victorianstyle#farming#victorianera#genealogy#victorians#instagood#instadaily#picoftheday - @photosfromourpast on Instagram

After 4 hours of posting this #painting, @instagram has bowed to the wishes of a couple of ignorant people who don’t understand art or know anything about art history, and decided to remove it for “violence or dangerous organizations”. . . If you can’t get the underlying message of this #artwork and think this somehow encourages or promotes anything evil, then you need to open your eyes and look again. . . If such artistic #censorship were to go unchecked, then many of the masterpieces in the world’s biggest museums would be gone (Caravaggio’s “Medusa”, Goya’s “Disasters of War”, Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights” just to name a few. And let’s not mention Shakespeare’s Macbeth). . . “My art is a question, not an answer”. - Gottfried Helnwein . . More than 300,000 people in the streets witnessed the fall of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic on 5 October 2000. The opposition had claimed victory in the September elections, but a Federal Election Commission called for a second ballot, claiming neither side had an outright majority. A general strike and mass protests followed. On 4 October 2000, Yugoslavias constitutional court annulled the election; by dawn the next day, people converged on Belgrade. By 4 pm protesters had captured the parliament building, and at 6.30 pm opposition leader Vojislav Kostunica addressed a rally of some half a million people and declared himself president. The image by Noel Patrick Quidu Gamma for Newsweek received Honorable Mention in the ‘General news, stories’ category of the 2001 World Press Photo Contest and is part of the special exhibition ‘People, Power: Documenting protest since 1957.’ In collaboration with @UNESCO, @unesconow and @minbz, the exhibition presents images that have become global symbols of people power and celebrates the work of professional photographers who are showing us the stories that matter. It will be displayed in public spaces across Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague as part of the World Press Freedom Conference 2020, and is free for visitors. Heres another one from my show QUARANTINE, up now at @spoke_art in New York. As I was working on this series of paintings, stuck at home as a pandemic raged around us, I kept trying to think of ways I could make it a bit lighter. Have more fun with it. Should I make a painting about Tiger King? (I did). Should I make a painting featuring toilet paper and Clorox cleaner? (I did). But the real world kept turning increasingly dark. One night, amidst protests gone national in scale, the lights at the White House turned off and the current president went and hid in a bunker, retreating in fear from his own people. During all of this, I sometimes felt like I was painting in real time, documenting America as 200 plus years of history came to a halting, screeching stop. Today feels like another one of those dark days. Let us remember Breonna Taylor. Let us remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Let us remember the people weve lost to COVID. Ill be thinking, too, of my grandfather, who served in World War II. Ill be thinking of those in my extended family tree who didnt escape Europe before they were exterminated. I will find myself awake tonight, lying in bed, staring at the stars outside my window, wondering if we are in the last days of democracy. If we are, I for one, intend to not be quiet. - @scottlistfield on Instagram
