So sad to hear of Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert who passed away yesterday, 11 September from complications arising from Covid-19. Toots had only last month released a new album, Got To Be Tough on the new Trojan Jamaica label set up by Zak Starkey and his partner Sshh. Toots and the Maytals were the support band on The Who’s 1975 The Who By Numbers US tour. Our thoughts go out to the Hibbert family and friends. Toots is survived by his wife of 39 years, Miss D, and his seven of eight children. 🚫LONG STORY SHORT🚫 . About 10 years ago now I received news that would forever change my life. Went in to the doctor because I wasn’t feeling well on several fronts. The doctor tests my blood and tells me that I am a type 1 diabetic. The first thing I asked my doctor was if I was going to go blind (that’s just what I heard happens 🤷🏽♂️) he laughed and said no. Fast forward after a 2 day stint in the ER. I arrive home and look in the fridge and it was the first time in a long time I had any emotional breakdown. I couldn’t eat anything (lol funny looking back at it now.) my sugar when I went into the ER was in the 700’s (many go to the er for sugar levels in the 300’s or even lower) Life for several years after would be a huge learning curve. Insulin every single day and giving myself shots was new. I went through moments of almost starving myself because I was afraid of high sugar and hated the needles. To over eating for fear of low sugar (I hated feeling weak). It has been a wild ride. . . In that time i picked up boxing. It was just something that made me feel strong internally. I did it alone. In solitude with the support of my lovely lady @bbl_ritz who paid for my first boxing Lesson. I did it To build me. A hobby that turned into a passion. A secret in my back pocket that only handful of people knew about. I was working out in a local gym where one of the owners offered me a job. After learning what I could there I graduated to @boxunionstudio .. . . I tell the story because I, like many of u, have come across adversity. Like many of you I have felt hopeless, scary, and life altering moments. And also like many of you, rather than accept weakness, chose boxing as a way to feel empowered. . . It is my goal to share that feeling and unlock the same potential for people around the world... It is...my purpose. I train bodies. I strengthen minds. . . PS. This story has never been something I felt comfortable talking about. I never wanted anyone to feel “sorry” for me . But through sharing this story I have connected with so many great people with similar if not identical struggles. If 1 person relates and grows from it. Hey yall, we have some good news on the girls and the #HomelessBlackTransWomenFund: As of this week, every girl from the original group I had in mind when starting this fund (ReVon, Brooklyn, Eunique, Jada, Shatara, Slim) is in temporary housing, plus 3 other girls (Africa, Epic, and Shay). These girls also now have cell phones, food, and with the help of Jayme Steger from SomeoneCares (she is now officially the case manager for the girls) they have started getting IDs and making healthcare and other appointments! I have met with and listened to them about how they envision getting off the streets and what they would like to do instead. Answers so far include everything from learning to do outreach to help fellow Trans women, going to school for fashion design, start recording their own music – all of which are the kind of opportunities Black and brown Trans women find it difficult to access due to societys tendency to exclude us, which then contributes to so many becoming homeless and turning to sex work. . As the movement for Black lives grows, it is important to remember, if you are not supporting and uplifting Black Trans lives, then the effort is incomplete. Like my sister and Black Trans activist @Raquel_Willis said, if you are not investing in Black Trans lives, you arent interested in liberation.
