1. This was a real moment for me. Camera test, Dominique, Jamie and Joe gathered on screen in their looks for the first time. I had never seen something I’d written come to life before. To see these astounding actors embody characters that mean a great deal to me is still completely insane. 2. Love you, @domfishback. You’re the 💙🐣💙of the movie. 3. If this photo didn’t exist I wouldn’t believe that this happened. 4. A quiet moment on set with The Directors, and two MVP’s Second Unit Director and Stunt Coordinator Kevin Scott and Mr. Mikey Simmonds our DP. 5. Final thought. Making a movie is extremely difficult. It’s a miracle any films exist at all. It starts with words on a piece of paper, grows into an enterprise that literally hundreds of people work on, sometimes leaving their family and friends for long stretches of time, and then eventually goes off into the world. This morning we launched the @wearpridemag book and photography project to celebrate the different groups within the LGBTQ+ community in the year of the 50th anniversary of Pride March and to raise money for the Black Trans community. We photographed (respecting social distancing) members and allies of the community who modeled Pride flags in fashionable and joyful ways to express their own pride and educate people on the diversity of the Pride movement. Then we turned everything into step-by-step instructions so that everyone can recreate each look and show support - even this year without official parades. All the profits go to the Marsha P. The Copacabana opened on November 10, 1940, at 10 East 60th Street in New York City. Although Monte Prosers name was on the lease, he had a powerful partner: mob boss Frank Costello. Proser (1904–1973), a native Englishman, was a well-connected nightclub owner and press agent whose various clients included Walt Disney, Maria Montez, Mary Pickford, and the Ziegfeld Follies. Costello put Jules Podell on the scene to look after his interests; Podell had a police record and would not have been an acceptable front man for the business, and indeed, the club faced tax problems and a racketeering investigation in 1944. Reggae lost its soul yesterday. I have many happy memories of Toots! One in particular: I was in Jamaica, late 70s, to do a photo shoot with Toots. The day we decided to do the shoot, we met at his house in Kingston with the idea of driving to the coast. As I arrived at the house, torrential rain started; Toots looked at me and smiled and said:”don’t worry Dennis”. I replied:”where is your car”. He said:” it is at the garage being resprayed and they will drop it off shortly”. Anyway, Toots is known as an herbalist (he loves his weed). He asked me if I would like a smoke, I replied: “yes”. He handed me a spliff and asked if I wanted a drink. He took me to a shelf where there were rows and rows of jars, stuffed with weed laced with white rum all dated (vintage); he poured me a glass from a particular year... all I can say, it was trippy. Eventually the car arrived, a white Cortina with white tires. “Wow” I said, “yeah man” he said. The rain had stopped, we got in the car with the intention of heading to the beach to do the photos. We drove for a few minutes; suddenly he stopped; I asked: “why do you stop Toots” he replied: “look Dennis”. I looked, he said: “you don’t see it?” When I looked ahead there was a big puddle across the narrow road. He said: “mi nah drive through this Dennis, with my brand new white tires and my new paint job, you mad?”. he refused to go any further, we returned to his house and drank some more of his special rum. Hey yall, we have some good news on the girls and the #HomelessBlackTransWomenFund: As of this week, every girl from the original group I had in mind when starting this fund (ReVon, Brooklyn, Eunique, Jada, Shatara, Slim) is in temporary housing, plus 3 other girls (Africa, Epic, and Shay). These girls also now have cell phones, food, and with the help of Jayme Steger from SomeoneCares (she is now officially the case manager for the girls) they have started getting IDs and making healthcare and other appointments! I have met with and listened to them about how they envision getting off the streets and what they would like to do instead. Answers so far include everything from learning to do outreach to help fellow Trans women, going to school for fashion design, start recording their own music – all of which are the kind of opportunities Black and brown Trans women find it difficult to access due to societys tendency to exclude us, which then contributes to so many becoming homeless and turning to sex work. . As the movement for Black lives grows, it is important to remember, if you are not supporting and uplifting Black Trans lives, then the effort is incomplete. Like my sister and Black Trans activist @Raquel_Willis said, if you are not investing in Black Trans lives, you arent interested in liberation. Women supporting women. What a concept. In this moment, Tammy was getting set to record her verse in the river. We were working with a skeleton crew due to Covid so it was all hands on deck all day. We all jumped in to handle makeup touch-ups, hair touch-ups and assisting our director @ninateapot. Our stylist @stylezofelise (pictured) went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly, she never once asked, she just dove in head first. It was SUPER hot and humid that day and I’m pretty sure this pic was taken just after I’d poured half a bottle of water down my jumpsuit to cool off. @bluartistry beat our faces so hard that they barely moved all day, even though we lost 10 pounds each of sweat. Assignment vs.Relationship? Isnt it crazy how you’re DEEP in your healing journey and all of a sudden the thing you thought you were over, still has layers to go. Still present. Tracy Guiteau is a talented painter and fashion designer. Born in New York to traditional Haitian parents, Guiteau says her decision to pursue art was often met with criticism. “My parents wanted me to be a nurse, and coming out of high school I received a full scholarship for nursing school,” Guiteau says. While trying to pursue the aspirations her family had for her, all she could think about was art. The cathartic nature of art allowed her to fully express herself. Art continues to keep Guiteau focused, grounded, and at peace in her life. Guiteau began making art in third grade and enrolled in the magnet art program, eventually graduating from New World School of the Arts High School in Miami, FL. As a young child, expressing emotion was viewed as weakness, and privacy was nonexistent. Art become her outlet where words failed. Each brush stroke exposed an unseen part from within; each piece of artwork became an entry in a visual diary. As she grew from adolescence into adulthood, so too has her artwork evolved. Guiteau aims to keep her paintings rich with color, with hints of complexity through the use of detailed lines. Often, words and phrases are hidden in the painting, expressing themes that inspire the individual piece, and in a way, is a continuation of her hesitancy as a child to openly express herself through written word. 💡💡💡 Somalis have a long history of attaching dress to nationalism, a strong sense of collective identity it is projected through their clothing. In the early 1800s and 1900s, clothing was used as a visual symbol of resistance against the colonial governments of the British and Italian in Somaliland. Today, focusing on the sophisticated yet simple garments worn by Somali women. For regular day activities, women wear the guntino, a long stretch of cloth tired over the shoulder and draped around the waist - the garment can be worn in many different styles and fabrics. For more formal settings, women wear the Dirac- a long light dress made of cotton, polyester of sari fabric. Somali women also have a long tradition of wearing a lot of jewellery, particularly bangles. Somali national dress reflects sustained genuine attempts by the people to cultivate social, economic and political change.
