On August 25, 2020: “Good afternoon, Sir. My parents live way up San Benancio on Corral del Cielo Road. Starting last Wednesday, they and their dogs evacuated due to the River Fire. The evacuation orders covering their house ended yesterday, but unfortunately, that was after the incident described in this email. Their temporary home was a small hotel room in Monterey. Yesterday, while my dad was walking one of the dogs on the hotel grounds, it attacked another dog, killing it. My parents felt awful. An Monterey PD Community Service Officer (CSO) responded and issued my dad a citation for the attack, However, the CSO later returned to the hotel to inform my parents that the PD was dismissing the citation. She explained that she spoke with you and that it was determined my parents had been through a lot with fires and that they had taken the right steps after the dog attack. I just wanted to shoot you a “thank you” and express my gratitude to both you and the CSO for dismissing the citation. In talking with my parents, I think the reasoning behind the dismissal meant more to them than the dismissal itself. Also, my parents told me that the CSO was super nice and respectful during her contact with them. I really appreciate that as well. This incident was definitely a learning experience for my parents, and they both are still very upset about what their dog did. That said, the reaction of both of you will certainly help in their recovery process. It also seems as if the owner of the other dog was extremely understanding about the situation (more so than most people would have been). I’m sure that helps my parents a little, too.
