Love to call myself out with a good meme. This is a personal post about anti-Blackness that I’m hoping might be useful for some of my fellow non-Black POC, for my white friends, and for my employer colleagues. I’ve been re-examining a lot of my past choices and actions in the light of the current moment. There is a reckoning coming for those with power, and that includes me, especially because of my role as an employer. . . I recently learned the acronym DARVO, a pattern of response to being held accountable: Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Oppressor. I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Mei Mei and/or I personally have perpetrated racism, upheld anti-Blackness, and failed to ensure equity our Black employees in ways both large and small, knowingly or otherwise. Recognizing this brings up a lot of feelings. DARVO has been a helpful framework as I observe my own emotions during this process — maybe it could help you too. . . Deny: This is when the voice in my head points to other business owners (mentally, or on instagram) who have committed egregious and overt acts of racism and say: “that’s not me! I’m not racist like them!” . . Attack: This is when the voice in my head tries to turn the tables on whoever is holding me accountable (sometimes this is myself). My knee-jerk reaction is to blame someone else, or the “situation I was in.” As an employer, the voice in my head sometimes says things like “they should have communicated better” or “it was a really tough time.” . . Reverse Victim & Oppressor: This is when I start to just feel bad for myself and completely forget about the person or people I’ve hurt. The voice says: “it’s so much responsibility. I did my best. This is so uncomfortable for me. Why is this happening to me.” . . I try to allow this internal voice to say its piece, and then tuck it away where it came from: a place of fear. I try tell myself that the only way to address the fear is to grow. Increasingly, I’m able to identify AND accept my failures and the inequitable and/or racist impacts created by them. The way we talk about food matters. A LOT. • At the risk of repeating a REALLY overused joke, the only clean thing about your food is that you washed it (hopefully). • So to the parent who tells me that your child “eats clean” → What I really think you’re trying to tell me is: you are trying you very best to give your child a healthy diet while minimizing the foods you think are unhealthy. • This is AMAZING. And I know that you saying this is you just trying to be a good parent. • BUT, there are three potential issues I have with “clean eating”. • 1️⃣ CLEAN EATING IS NOT A THING. There is no universal definition for clean eating. There is no secret scale that nutrition experts use to rate a diets cleanliness. “Clean eating” is a term coined by the wellness industry to make you feel like your child’s diet (or yours) is “dirty”, and that you need a product/supplement/treatment to fix it. 2️⃣ When you say food is “clean”, you are implying that other food is “dirty”. Our children generally get the message (from you or others) that dirty is bad and clean is good. And now we have associated morality with food. We are indirectly telling our kids that they are good when they eat a certain way, and bad when they eat another. And THIS mentality can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food. • 3️⃣ The idea of eating “clean” perpetuates the notion that the only healthy diet is one free of additives, colors, anything in a wrapper, non-organic produce, sugar, and pretty much anything else that can be considered “bad”. BUT, the truth is, your child’s diet can be healthy WITH these things or WITHOUT. • What’s WAY more important than your child’s diet being “clean”? • Healthy relationships with food Family meals Social skills learned at mealtimes Learning life skills in the kitchen Fruits and veggies (canned, frozen, famers market, all of the above) VARIETY • Rant over. Share this with someone who needs to know that the number of packaged foods that they serve their kids is not a measure of their parenting skills. I can’t believe these types of TV shows are still getting air time @channel4 . Firstly, Michael Mosley has not been a practicing doctor for over 30 years. Since then he has turned himself into a self-proclaimed weight loss guru but actually has no authorisation to provide nutritional advice, yet he still promotes 800 calorie diets. . Very low calorie diets (VLCD) should only be administered under close supervision. They are only ever intended for specific populations i.e. those with Type 2 Diabetes, not for the general population watching this show. This is because a diet of this restrictive nature can be very damaging for your body and mind, therefore needs constant support. . Restrictive diets are not only likely to lead to nutritional deficiencies but also when you lose weight rapidly, a lot of this is actually just water weight and muscle mass, not fat mass . VLCD are likely to trigger eating disorders. I’ve worked with many clients at the @Rhitrition clinic who have gone through years of yo-yo dieting, going from periods of basically starvation to binge eating, resulting in food preoccupation and disordered eating. . Also the fact that he expects behaviour change without looking at the connection between food and emotions, infuriates me. One volunteer opened up about using food as comfort to grieve a family members death and this was completely overlooked. . But I think this programme misses out the most important emphasis, which is that you have to actually stick to the plan for an extended period of time, and change your habits for good, in order to achieve long-lasting change. Not just for 21 days. . Why do I still watch this rubbish? Because I secretly love watching infuriating TV, that makes me want to yell and chuck things at the telly. . I’m looking at you, girl. The one who is always trying to “eat perfectly”. “Hit all my macros perfectly”. “Not screw up this week.” “Workout 5 days this week” (and feel guilty on the two days you don’t.) At some point, we were told that working out is good, and rest is bad. That every day spent resting is a day not getting closer to your goals. We were told that sugar is bad. Not tracking a meal is bad. That both of these things are “falling off track” and “being bad”. But that’s not true. A balanced wellness routine INCLUDES rest days. It NEEDS rest days. Rest days are just as needed for strength & muscle building as workout days are. Rest days are what actually allow muscle to grow, and help your body de-stress so you can keep improving. A balanced wellness routine INCLUDES pizza. Dessert. Not tracking a meal here and there. Because in order for any nutrition plan to be sustainable, it has to include things you like. So that slice of pizza you “caved” into last week? Part of the long term solution. Part of the plan. Because when you let yourself eat a little pizza, you prevent a binge later on. And you create a lifestyle of wellness that includes things you love (so you will sustain it). So let’s stop thinking that a rest day is a bad thing.
