When the need for power overrides what’s best for the children, what do you do? Minimizing the toxicity with a co-parent who thrives on control can be challenging to say the least. The co-parent who’s seeking control in the co-parenting relationship is most likely unable to see outside of their behaviors. Their choice of words and actions are deeply rooted in their fears which is the reason they aren’t willing to admit nor have introspective. Unfortunately, if you are on the other end of their control tactics this can make your life stressful and emotionally draining. How do you deal with a controlling co-parent? 1. Respond don’t react - they thrive off an emotional reaction 2. Stay outside of the game - respond with only factual data about the children 3. Establish a self-care plan for when it becomes too much - recognize this about them and not you 4. Listen and ask more questions versus making statements - the more you understand their motive the better position you’ll be in to negotiate a plan 5. Present two solutions to the problem that work best for the children (and you) and let them choose - this allows them to think they have the last word even though you presented the solutions. - @divorcefamilymediation on Instagram
