〰️ It’s hard to believe that it’s been a full decade. Today marks 10 years since you’ve come and gone from this Earthly realm. Every year I learn something new around your divine presence. The light of my son has carried me to the corners of my existence, the places I’ve been too afraid to acknowledge. His life and passing challenge me to dig deeper, where I allow myself to occupy the full spectrum of my emotions, and trust that it’s ok for me to be and express all the way without guilt or shame. ✨✨✨✨ Today I turn 25 years old. For me today feels significant as I am moving further into my mother phase of life, and leaving my maiden phase further behind. I don’t say this very often but I feel some shame around being a ‘young mother’ But when I actually look at those thoughts, I see they are not mine but societal ones I just pick up from time to time. These thoughts have lead me to reflect how odd it is that it seems ‘socially acceptable’ to have children during this tiny age bracket of what we are actually able to create life. Anyway, this is not what I actually intended to share today - what I wanted to share was my intention for this next rotation around the sun. My dear friend and sister Amor asked me yesterday and I didn’t have an answer, but I feel like after much reflection my intention moving into this next year/phase is to B E G I N . This past year was all about reprogramming and settling into motherhood. But now it is time to begin all that I desire to create. To let go of my self judgement and the judgement from others I imagine. I choose here and now to commit to myself, to begin over and over until I find my flow. I grateful to be born at this time of the year, in a time of inward reflection yet also hopeful emergent energy. It’s generally been really hard for me to find a mentor figure. And when I asked successful people for advice, I was met with a lot of platitudes (ie. “just don’t give up!”) and not a lot of specific advice. No one was willing to give me any transparency about their journey, so not only did I not get the right guidance, but I also felt like a failure for not having accomplished X at whatever age—only to find out later that these same people I was comparing myself to had other resources and starting lines (ie. they had a trust fund, etc.). . . I transitioned into the sustainable fashion world from the world of arts activism/non-profits in 2014. Now that it is a rising industry, I want to give other women who share a similar background as me (immigrant, women of color) honest advice about what it really takes to succeed and find their role in the movement. No trust funds necessary, sis! . . That’s why I started an online show/podcast called @gritandglamourshow where I do honest interviews with fashion role models. And since I get a lot of questions about my career path, Im thinking of doing a Grit & Glamour Office Hours convo on IG Live so you can ask me anything you want.
