Recently, a friend of mine reached out to me and told me that he failed his first exam of grad school. In order to give some ernest advice and instill a sense of hope, I shared a personal truth that only seems befitting to share with you all. Almost 6 months ago, I quit my job, went back to school and started my doctorate in nurse anesthesia. I have been out of school for 6 years and have worked the bedside where I encountered everything under the sun. I can and will write a book about those experiences. I felt strong and confident going into the first quarter of school. The thrill and excitement was still there and was all the fuel I needed. Then we took our first clinical anatomy exam. I studied so much, I was beginning to talk in my sleep and even have dreams about the lecture content. The test came and went. The content was difficult and taking an anatomy practical virtually was unprecedented and challenging. I got a 75. I BARELY passed. I was so angry at myself. This score did not reflect even a fraction of the time, energy, effort and sacrifice that I put into my preparation. But that was neither here nor there. When you’re in a fast paced program with some of the most intellectual minds around, there isnt any time to sit and mope. I had to remind myself of ALL the circumstances. This was the first exam, the first quarter, and only ONE class. I was still getting used to home schooling and independent learning. Fast forward to the final exam. 97%. My highest score to date .. for MYSELF. Not a comparison or race with anyone else. Nothing changed. The class was still challenging, I was still at home, except this time, I took the time to understand myself, what worked and what didn’t. I improved my studying strategies, made appointments with faculty to review my mistakes and did the very best that I could. A bad exam, low score, or an assignment is not indicative of your intelligence. You’re above that and you’re better than that. Keep striving! - @wali_khann on Instagram
