Fie Sommer, 25. The first time I shaved my legs I was 11 years old. I didnt think too much about it, but when I got older I realised how fucked up this was. I started wondering “ where does this idea of shaving legs come from? Is anyone profiting from it?” And I realised that I had become a slave to society and the world economy. About 3 years ago I had a breakdown. I got stressed out - stressed from all the expectations. Especially the societys expectations of how I should look and act as a woman. Women are supposed to behave nicely, smile and not be too loud. Suddenly shaving my legs became a symbol of shaving away all my wildness, my nature, my integrity. I desperately needed to liberate myself from all these norms to regain a worthy life. I cut my hair short, only wore baggy clothes, didn’t shave and never wore anything feminine. This period in my life was like hitting a restart button where all norms were washed away. Gradually I started feeling more comfortable in my own body and little by little I could start wearing whatever I wanted. If I wanted to wear baggy clothes then thats what I would do. If I wanted to wear a feminine dress then thats what I would do; because I wanted to and not because I gave into the pressure of societys norms or the world economy. To stay comfortable in my own body is still a process and I’m fighting for- and protecting my right to remain real - just how I was born. Fighting for the younger me, my future children and all my sisters in the world.
