I’ve had many conversations about the cowboy archetype and the reasons I’m drawn to it. For the most part, it’s personal. I grew up riding horses and rebelled against the english style. I wanted bear-back quarter horse rides or big comfortable saddles. I love the work a barn requires. I’m not afraid to ride a mustang who doesn’t fit the broken mold and when I lived in Joshua Tree I was blessed to care for two of these honorable beings. In the last year, it’s been a revival of boots and hats because that’s how I embody my dead best friend who was from rural Missouri and a masterful collector of country tunes. My alter ego loves the honky tonk no shits given attitude. But beyond the personal connection is the cultural. I’ve been so inspired to witness the way counter cultures pluck up aspects of the american dream aesthetic and turn them on their head. A friend just sent me an amazing article about Queer rodeo. I see various Black visionaries turning cowboy attire into high fashion. I love the play on power, the way we can take a patriarchal symbol and rewrite it with our own subversive commentary, turn it Queer, let it be Black and beautiful, use it to show our lack of fear and submission. I grew up with a southern step dad who has a deep deep twang, but it’s me who wears the snakeskin boots, it’s me who rides the stallion. Poem from The Edge of the Continent Volume Three - The Desert. Rage My anger is its own person. On some days, my anger is a restless child shuffling its feet as mamaji remarks over the neighbours daughters clothes or masi comments on didis complexion. On other days, she comes out shrieking like a hyena and my grandma can no longer look at me. She says she misses the young soft-spoken girl I once was. But I am helpless aita. What to do when casual sexism manifests as naturally as exhaling during morning yoga sessions. I throw tantrums over the newspapers as marital rapes and violence go unnoticed on pg 6; girls identities reduced to mere case numbers in police stations all over the country or something to be spoken about with hushed tones over evening walks. My mother sews rebel inside my lip and I cut it further to spell out lion. I taste the iron on my tongue as I call out the irony. My anger is bulimic.They stuff enrage into my mouth, like red and yellow pills that are supposed to treat the diseased mind of our woke generation but it comes climbing up my throat till I vomit. My body rejects it. They say dont speak about it. Keep quiet. Its none of your business. But you lock your doors at night, before the thieves break in. Were all soft targets. So tell me, how many men have gotten their hands inside your ribs and taken you apart. Where did they touch you? At your workplace/in the bus/on the road. NO, BUT WHERE DID THEY TOUCH YOU? Come and join the sad girls club and lets drink tea over statistics of a woman being raped every 7 mins and thank god we arent one of them. Yet. Rejoice at barely surviving. I am angry and I wear it proudly, etched on my bra strap and over the pads I buy . It is not to be wrapped inside black polythenes and white newspapers; or to be pushed out of sight on the clothes line so that people, from the glass windows of their glass houses, dont throw stones at a girls fragile chastity My anger is stepping out of thatched huts and bricked houses alike, stripping off all the labels that say only men can be angry. Its parading naked on the streets,all bloodied and full of light.So the next time you call women soft targets for a mans rage, remember were WOMEN and we are all ANGRY - @scrawled_writings on Instagram
