Fell asleep at 6:30 on Sun. morning, got three hours of sleep before I had to wake up to make final touches and get dressed for the big surprise reveal for Adam’s Birthday. I may have been exhausted but it was well worth it for the look on his face and just how happy he was. I am honestly shocked I was able to pull this off the way I did, and just how fun it turned out. I don’t frequently pat myself on the back, but this one I feel like I can. Ever since lockdown, Adam had been missing going to a diner. As he puts it, some of his best memories are tied to late nights, carafes of coffee and great company. I sure missed it too. When he mentioned that all he wished he could do for his birthday was start it off by sitting in a favorite diner, eating some favorite breakfast food and sipping on a simple cup of coffee, I knew I had to do something. So, I did all I could to transform our tiny little living space into his very own Diner. I got actual vintage dining essentials such as plates with an airbrushed red rim and off white coffee mugs. I adorned the table with a vintage style Coca Cola napkin holder, vintage salt and pepper shakers, a glass bottle of ketchup, a Coca Cola straw dispenser, and, of course, a table top jukebox that could play the oldies diner playlist I made for him over Bluetooth. I covered the room in as much stylistic touches as possible. A checkerboard floor, a silver Diner style door, old school metal Diner wall signs, and turned our chairs and futon to look like retro Diner furniture. On the TV, I uploaded a Diner backdrop that had ambient Diner noises playing in the background to enhance the atmosphere of a Diner. Finally, I had to play the part. Found an actual vintage Diner uniform (complete with the name “Fanny” embroidered on the lapel 😂) and an actual Guest Check notepad to take Adam’s order. Adam threw me one of the best birthdays ever this year. It is unfortunate that my birthday party happened and then the world shut down, but I still am grateful for it. I’ve been having trouble doing anything this week but cry about Mr. Shankly so I’m slow to posting, but I wanted to share the piece I did for @i_d about the 25th anniversary of Empire Records (yes, there was a lot of great movie anniversaries this year!) for any fellow fans. Empire Records was another favorite of mine when I was a teen. I can still quote every line from memory. I was so obsessed with @ethanembry that I replicated HIS outfit from the movie, which @toripee can attest to) and not, like, Liv Tyler’s pastel blue plaid skirt. Though, I thought his Chainsaw Kittens shirt was orange due to VHS quality back then, lmao. Anyway, I got to speak with the film’s costume designer, Susan Lyall, about her work for the film and loved hearing all the thought that went into the outfits. Fun Fact: Susan was in a band called The Band of Susans (!) so there’s a sort of Easter egg in the movie with her bands poster on the wall of their break room. Link in bio. In Thai classrooms, showing a rebellious or creative streak through what you wear is difficult. School uniform rules are strict, down to how pupils hair should be cut and the type of socks and shoes they are allowed to wear. But as students around the country push back against what they call archaic rules and join a broader pro-democracy movement, a young clothing designer is throwing his support behind them in a colourful way. Tin Tunsopon has taken the typical uniform of pleated skirts and white sailor shirts for girls and neat shorts and white shirts for boys and blown them up into exaggerated versions with huge collars and sleeve ruffles made from shoe laces. By re-creating these uniforms and giving them various designs...people can see that we should no longer be attached to the (traditional) uniforms anymore, 23-year-old Tin told Reuters. The clothing line labeled the rule breakers was launched in collaboration with the Wacoal lingerie brand in June with prices ranging from $100 to a top end of $475, for a long pleat skirt with a big bow. Tin said they are designed for modern day girls, who are not afraid to express themselves and move with confidence. The uniforms break away from the traditional forms, although still resembles a uniform ... I want to support kids to be as creative as they can, said Tin. Do you ever get sunburn around the neck of your top or the edges of your bikini because you didn’t want to get sunscreen on your clothes? 🙋🏻♀️I have definitely been guilty of this in my pre-Dermatology days. . The obvious solution is to apply your sunscreen to the parts of your body that will be left exposed before putting on your clothes or swimsuit as you’re less likely to miss patches of skin here and there in an attempt to protect your clothes from white marks (the irony...sacrificing skin to protect clothes 🧐). . In reality though, not everyone is as diligent as a Dermatologist. So, if you’ve got your clothes on already and SPF on your face, but you’re thinking about skipping sunscreen on your neck and chest because it might leave white marks or make your clothes stick to your skin, here are some of my favourite “melt in quickly without a trace” sun protection products. Remember that sunscreen with chemical filters must be applied 20 or so minutes before you go in the sun ☀️ 🔸 @heliocareuk 360 water gel SPF50 - super lightweight, non sticky, soaks in fast. 🔸 @glossier invisible shield SPF30 - a totally transparent gel. 🔸 @altruistsun sunscreen SPF30 - spreads really easily and then disappears without stickiness - one of the best body sunscreens I have ever used because it just doesn’t feel like sunscreen. 🔸 @garnieruk Ambre Solaire face protection mist SPF50* - for invisible, over your makeup top-ups throughout the day. . I STOPPED RUNNING. 🏃🏾♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After years of heartbreak after the sudden passing of my best friend. Failed jobs. Failed relationships. I created a travel blog so I could run away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was constantly sick and anxious from grief, highly sensitive and reactive and honestly not the easiest person to be around. I felt out of control. Like a supporting character in my own life. So I ran. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I ran to Switzerland. I ran to Thailand. I ran to Italy. I ran to China. Morocco. Spain. Wherever I could go to NOT face myself, I did. Eventually I found out that wherever you go, there you are. I couldn’t run away from my feelings. In fact, running forced me to confront them faster. And for that I will always be grateful for the privilege of travel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I moved to Vancouver to set up roots and to challenge myself to stop running. I moved to slow down. Quite the oxymoron, I know. I’ll share some deeper reasons as to why I didn’t choose Toronto as my place to heal in another post.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I moved as a catalyst for the start of a new life. I’ve found it really useful seeing what other makeup artists have done to make their kit covid safe. So I wanted to share my set up. I’ve been consulting this past week (I’ve touched no faces, only hair, I promise). Getting my kit reorganised and fully deep cleaned took for ever but I’m happy with the set up I have. ✖️ Bed roll instead of towels ✖️ 70% IPA ✖️ Hand sanitiser ✖️ @barbicideblue for tools & hard surfaces. ✖️Cif professional wipes - bacterial & viruses. ✖️ @iso_clean brush cleaner. ✖️ Palette & spatula sets - in their own sealed packaging. Clean for each model. I have 3 of these and for bridal will alternate between clients. One in use, one in @barbicideblue. ✖️Brush sets - sealed brush sets for each model/client. Enough for the day. No spot cleaning of brushes & reusing. But @iso_clean on hand if I need to clean brush for the same client/model. ✖️Sample/travel size mascaras. I also now have @eyeko full size mascaras as they’re easy to squeeze on to palette. ✖️Sealed bin. Currently using @mykitco pod as it can be compacted down in kit after use. ✖️ Disposables. Bamboo mascara & lip wands, cotton buds, gauze etc. All in separate sealed bags & contained in one big zip bag. ✖️ Clip lock container for putting tools in @barbicideblue. Also a small cup container for pencil sharpeners/ eyelash curlers. ✖️ Folding bowl (compact for fitting in kit) for everything used/touched. Everything is then cleaned before going back in my kit. ✖️ 5 well palettes for model kits and touch ups. These are just old @rcmamakeup foundation palettes that I’ve cleaned and repurposed. ✖️ Visor from @mowbrayleather ✖️ @juddmedical Face mask ✖️Gloves if required Very minimal product out. Only what is needed. All my kit is in sealable zip bags that I wipe down after handling & put back in case. Whilst consulting I’ve made up kits for models, decanting product on to palettes & using loose powders or creams where possible. But if not doing the cotton pad trick for pressed powders (watch @babskymakeup video). I’ve then advised at a distance with mask & visor on. I wanted to share what a person with diabetes has to carry everyday to survive. (PICTURE 1) This is my personal kit I have to carry just to make it through a day and just in case of emergencies. (Also not pictured all my medications for my transplant) If I forget one of these things I could go into a diabetic coma or have seizures. My seizures take away my motor skills and I start losing sense of speech and then my body freezes in a seize. It is painful and exhausting as well as scary. It’s a lot to remember but you get use to it and then it becomes basic necessity, similar to grabbing your keys when you’re about to go somewhere. It’s a lot but I have to do it for my well-being. (PICTURE 2) My Kit plus covid. Notice there is the addition of a mask and hand sanitizer. I barely go anywhere and if I do it’s basically outside only. I’m trying to show the difference between my survival of everyday vs how easy it is to care about others to always have a mask with you. It’s not hard. If you say “oh I forgot it in my car but I’m fine”, “ya I don’t have any symptoms so I don’t need a mask”, “I just don’t like wearing it”, “I’m over hearing everyone say wear a mask”, “I’m not sick so I don’t need one”...you’re missing the point. I wish I didn’t have to carry around all the things I have to, but I do. It is such an easy thing to just grab a mask and/or have it in your pocket or bag and carry with you (but really should be wearing it for everyone’s safety if can’t manage social distance or if someone is immune compromised) and be a part of the change/altering in the spread. There is asymptomatic and also there is kindness. Now, I’m not saying I reinvented the wheel or anything... but I’ve always wanted to achieve this sort of heart shape look in a hat and have tried a few other techniques when I fell upon what is now currently my Lula beret. Deceptively simple, I researched it thoroughly to make sure no one had done it before. I’m a very conscientious designer and like to make sure everything I make is not currently available or has been made recently, even if the design hit me like lightning from above. (this does happen occasionally) I can truthfully say I’ve never seen anyone else do this and I’ve worked in the millinery industry for over 12 years... sure, heart shaped hats are nothing new but if you really research vintage pieces, you’ll find at best a crocheted version. I even found an artist from the 70s who made a giant heart beret cut and sew as an art piece and I messaged him, lovely guy. I’ve had some experiences in the last year with ‘young designers’(I use the term designer loosly) that have been copying this hat and every time I see it, I get gutted. They get very defensive and rude; I can only imagine because they had been caught out. This has happened with a turban I have made as well, and I can only tie it all back to getting hats on @ditavonteese haha my blessing and curse.
