In previous years, fall at The Farm has meant apple picking, corn-mazing, animal petting, pumpkin hunting, and family fun. It goes without saying, this year is different. While we understand the powerful human need to celebrate the annual harvest and the glorious land that we have farmed for over a century - the safety of our employees and customers comes first. This was an extremely difficult decision for us, but Hickory Nut Gap Farm will not be open for our traditional fall activities. Our online store offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the tastes of autumn, including our crisp, local apples and cider. You can also shop for grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, other local grocery items, and sign up for our growing CSA program. We will also be offering private tours and farm experiences for companies, organizations, or other groups (using COVID-safe protocols). ✊🏽 AVANZAN LAS CERTIFICACIONES AGROECOLÓGICAS 🌿 ⠀ 🌾 Ayer en el cordón hortícola de La Plata se entregaron dos nuevas certificaciones agroecológicas y ya son 21 las familias trabajadoras de la tierra que recibieron una constancia de que su producción es agroecológica. 🔖 Las Certificaciones Participativas de Garantía, un proceso que la UTT diseñó para garantizar que la producción que llega a los Almacenes y Nodos respeta los principios de la agroecología, evalúan detenidamente el suelo, el agua y la producción de cada quinta, pero también la vivienda y la calidad de vida de lxs trabajadorxs. ⠀ 👨🏻🌾👩🏽🌾 En la jornada de ayer participaron integrantes de los Nodos, del área de Comercialización de la UTT y @almacenutt, y el INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria). 2020 malt barley harvest wrapped up a few days ago. Still wheat and other grains to come off but all the malt barley is safely in storage with good quality. Farming is always an exercise in optimism. The hot, dry summer meant yield per acre was down but we got a high bushel weight. Bushel weight is how heavy a given volume of grain is. A higher weight means more larger individual grains which gives the right proportion of husk to starch for malting and ultimately brewing. Sister Nettle is so generous! These stunning stalks are perfect for harvesting right now, as the days grow crisper and shorter. Nettle stalks make excellent cordage or plant fiber material, and the extra leaves can be dried for a mineral-replenishing winter tea. Nettle has been a vital teacher for me, showing me her art of balancing nurturing generosity with harsh protection. She’s taught me that pain is a necessary part of healing, that discomfort draws out needed resiliency, that we can honor our sacred sting and still offer the remedy for it.
