William and I got engaged in February of this year. He was on the computer and I was watching tv. We were talking about how we wanted to get married but how overwhelmed we both felt thinking of planning and carrying out a traditional wedding. We both felt strongly that if we got married we would keep it simple with a ceremony in the back yard and less than 20 people. Then I asked him if he just wanted to get married this year? He said “Sure!” so we picked out a weekend I had no other weddings and I called our four favorite people to tell them the news. It wasn’t super “romantic” and it wasn’t some grand story to tell others but it was the perfect moment despite being in our pajamas. Colors, beauty, movement... these elements matter when putting together a tabletop! When designing (I know this may sound silly but...) I like to imagine an enchanted tabletop, if every item on the table came to life (like in beauty and the beast). Would they all get along, would they have exciting conversations, are they in conversation now?! Do they compliment each other?! Would they all be able to get along at the dinner party?! Yesss?! Then magnifique! If not- if one item is too loud, too quiet, or just not a perfect fit - remove it from the table and replace it with something that is. It would be an uncomfortable situation for that fork to be in anyway! 😉 right?! We should all be able to have access to abortion care, at any time and for any reason. For decades, anti-abortion politicians have been working overtime to create financial and logistical barriers that make it harder for us to get the care we need when we want it. It’s time to abolish restrictions on abortion and make sure that everyone has access, including throughout pregnancy. Sometimes people need abortions later in their pregnancies because they didn’t realize they were pregnant until after the first trimester. Sometimes people need abortions later in their pregnancies because they were tricked and delayed by anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers. Sometimes it’s because it takes so damn long to raise the money to pay for an abortion and get to a clinic. Sometimes it’s because they find out the pregnancy isn’t progressing in a way that’s healthy. Sometimes it just takes that long for a young person to navigate the court system to get a judicial bypass because the state requires their parents to be involved. Sometimes it’s all of these things combined, but at the end of the day, whatever their reason, we should support everyone who wants an abortion. No matter what, we deserve abortion access. I really love designing things. A table spread, a branding suite, a bedside table. An event, an arrangement, my insta stories. I have roots is the floral industry, a degree in Graphic Design, and the ambition to express something with what I do. This mix of inspirations can be confusing at times, as I figure out what to pursue, but I’m in it for the journey, and I’m thankful that it brought me here. 2020 Graduate Work, @csm_news 3/3: Spotlighting on the most materially innovative works from graduates, we look at ‘Contemporary Seashell Tadelakt’ by @lolominy of @materialfutures. Seonmin’s work exhibits how waste-based design solutions can be both beautiful and regenerative. She transforms waste oyster shells into a waterproof, durable material for contemporary furniture, which in turn can neutralize and heal acidic soils at the end of their life, upon degradation. Seonmin has worked with London-based seafood restaurant @wrightbrosltd and pulled from the Moroccan technique of Tadelakt to create the pebble-like surfaces of her material, which offers a sustainable alternative to cement or plaster. - @materialdriven on Instagram
