The news said 37% of Hawaii is out of work right now and the “food” that’s being handed out from the food banks is cows milk and eggs. No disrespect to the food bank, we love the work they do but I know there might be some out there wondering what they are going to eat if this keeps going on. So we built a bag of plant based groceries, this is what $50 worth of food looks like and it’s a good amount of food. We’ve already given this one away and are building another for someone who’s at home with no income right now. If you want to help, go out and build one for a friend or neighbor. If anybody has any ideas or if you know anybody who could use a bag of groceries or if you want to help buy a $50 bag of groceries -let us know. We could use some volunteers to go shopping too. There were many great female racing drivers pre-war, but few have as remarkable story as Hellé Nice. Born in 1900 in a tiny provincial French village, at only 16 she worked as a nude model for artist René Carrère, before becoming a dancer, performing at cabarets around Europe. Whilst her dancing career was cut short due to a skiing accident whilst trying to evade an avalanche, it resulted in her entering motorsport. Through her friendship with Philippe de Rothschild, she was introduced to Ettore Bugatti, which lead to her racing a Bugatti Type 35C in a number of Grand Prix in France and also at Monza. Whilst she never won a Grand Prix race, she competed against some of the greatest drivers of the period often with solid results, and was the only female entrant on the Grand Prix circuit at the time. Sadly in 1936 she had an awful accident at the São Paulo Grand Prix whilst in 3rd position, which resulted in the death of 6 spectators and with Hellé assumed to be dead. Remarkably after 3 days in a coma she awoke and two months later was discharged from the hospital. Despite her accident she got back behind the wheel though post war, in 1949 fellow driver Louis Chiron accused her of collaborating with the Nazis, which whilst there was a lack of definitive evidence, left her reputation in tatters and effectively ended her racing career. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. 🇩🇪 Reichsstadt Nürnberg 🇩🇪 This beautiful view of the City of Nuremberg was included in a book called Liber Chronicarum, translated as Schedelsche Weltchronik in German and as Nuremberg Chronicle in English. The book is an illustrated encyclopedia of world history, often embedded in a biblical narrative. The author Hartmann Schedel published his book in Latin in 1493, after years of work. It was translated and published in German the same year. The incunabulum (pre-16th century printed book) was one of the first incunabula to successfully integrate illustrations and text. The book was very commercially successful for its time. An estimated 1400 to 1500 copies were sold of the Latin version, as well as around 700 to 1000 of the German translation. If a buyer wanted his illustrations to be colored, he went to a book-coloring specialist, which was a rising industry at the time. Due to this, every colored illustration is unique. The success and prestige the book enjoyed motivated a man named Johann Schönsperger to reproduce the book without the authors consent - one of the first large-scale book piracy operations. Schönsperger published multiple editions between 1496 and 1500, both in Latin and in German. On June 1, 1945, Polish soldiers in the French occupation forces were on guard in the Altshausen military prison, where he had been locked up. Dirlewanger was beaten to death by ex-prisoners from an extermination camp. This news was kept hidden at the beginning, and so many rumors and legends arose around his death. The French buried Dirlewangers body on June 19, 1945. . Roasted Tomato Salsa Chunky, smooth, roasted, flavourful packed tomato salsa is a Godsend on any day. And on a weekday in particular, when you’re hungry but not hungry enough for a full dinner. And you’re in the mood to snack while watching Netflix. This is where this delicious chunky salsa comes into play. I make this in matters of minutes, requires minimal prep, and wash up is of a pan, mixer, chop board, knife and spoon. That’s it. The process entails roughly chopping tomatoes, onion and garlic, and chilies if you have any. Roast on very high heat in a pan – 10 minutes, then add seasonings, and roast another 10 minutes, let cool and pulse, pulse, pulse. That’s it. Keep in the fridge until ready to eat, or instantly when it’s just slightly warm. Roasted chicken and corn adobo enchiladas via @halfbakedharvest ✨ 10/10 recommend this recipe lmk if you want me to send you think link! — These were a HIT with my family! Roasting the chicken, corn, Anaheim pepper, and aromatics adds depth that I don’t usually taste in enchiladas (thanks to a nice char on everything but the chicken). The corn tortillas get nice and crunchy in all of the right places and don’t break down like they would in a saucier recipe! — The recipe called for a poblano pepper but I opted for the slightly sweeter/spicer Anaheim because of availability at my store—honestly either would work fine! I am not sure the recipe called for this but ended up removing the skin from the roasted pepper because I am not down with papery pepper skins in my enchiladas. The roasted pepper definitely added a lot of flavor and the next time I make this I think I’ll add two plus a jalapeño to give it even more! — I used a roasted “medium” salsa verde and I’m glad I did because it seemed to have a bit more body than the regular “mild” stuff. Growing up Colescott had a love for the arts, he witnessed Diego Rivera paint a mural at the Golden Gate international exposition, played drums, and even considered pursuing a career in music. Robert like many others in his generation was drafted by the u.s. army during World War 2, and was stationed in France which at the time was considered the capital of the art world, and upon his return he enrolled at UC Berkeley, going back and forth to France until he obtained his masters in 1952. A former professor at Portland State University, Colescott’s work is commentary on life for African Americans at the turn of the 20th century. Say hello to my little “no recipe” friend. Haha! Kidding. Not really. 🤓 Caprese Shrimp Avocado Salad! We have been on a major seafood and salad kick this summer for some reason. This salad is a lip smacking, and that’s the only thing you hear in the room kind of salad, if you know what I mean. Inspired by one of @cafedelites chicken salads, I had seen some time ago. I made a quick herby red wine vinegar/olive oil vinaigrette that I tossed the fresh mozzarella and tomatoes in. Then I did a drizzle of a Balsamic Reduction on top because that’s what we like. ☺️ For the Shrimp, I seasoned that with salt/pepper and Italian dried herbs. Sautéed them on both sides in some olive oil, until they look like pictured and added in some garlic and a squeeze of lemon. Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad with Hummus Dip Tabbouleh (also called as tabouli) is a Middle Eastern Vegetarian dish salad. This version swaps out the traditional bulgur salad for non-traditional quinoa & makes it gluten-free by making it nutrient-dense. This is an easy salad recipe that’s filled with fresh herbs, vegetables, healthy quinoa & salad dressing. Many people have their own variations & various alternative versions, making this recipe versatile. Ingredients  1 cup Quinoa  Chopped and sorted vegetables (Tomatoes, Red, green & yellow capsicum, zucchini)  Chopped Mint leaves and Celery leaves For Salad dressing  Olive Oil  1 squeezed Lemon  Salt and pepper to taste  Oregano as per taste Method:  In a large saucepan, bring water to boil. Add quinoa. Reduce heat-simmer, covered, for 12-15 minutes until liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Cook until the quinoa is fluffy & chewy.  Transfer to a large bowl & let it cool completely.  Slightly Sauté the chopped vegetables and add chopped mint & celery leaves to it. Add the quinoa to the vegetable mixture.  In a small bowl, whisk lemon juice, olive oil & seasoning until blended. Drizzle over the quinoa mixture & toss to coat.  Serve at room temperature or refrigerate until serving. Unido a lo anterior, se experimentó un proceso de privatización de servicios básicos y aislamiento de familias pobres en sectores de viviendas sociales. Ejemplos de ello son los procesos de tomas de terreno y erradicación en sectores como la candelaria, Boca Sur y San Pedro de la Costa, que según sus propios vecinos: “Los llevó de sectores pobres hacia terrenos polvorientos y escondidos” . Conclusión De la revisión histórica del proceso de conformación de la desigualdad en San Pedro de la Paz, se extraen varias lecciones medulares. La primera, es que la morfología territorial de la comuna, respondió en primera instancia, a un proceso modernizador del capitalismo, en el que prevaleció el criterio económico sobre el social. Por su parte, el modelo de desarrollo económico hacia adentro, produjo los mayores avances arquitectónicos y de calidad de vida, para los vecinos de nuestra comuna, contrario a lo que ocurrió en dictadura, donde se acrecentó la desigualdad y se repitió el patrón que precarizó y segregó a las comunidades más pobres, perpetuando así las distancias con los grupos históricamente más privilegiados. A modo de reflexión final, cabe destacar que la conciencia de esta brecha, genera un componente subjetivo de desigualdad, que lleva a percibirla como una permanente afrenta a la dignidad personal de los que la experimentan. In honor of the first day of FOOTBALL SEASON 🕺🏾 we’re whippin up some homemade soft pretzels because they’re one of the best game day snacks 🤪🏈 〰️ ^Makes about 12 medium sized pretzels* Heat 1 1/4c water until warm (not boiling, approx 110F). Dissolve 1 tsp white sugar + 4 tsp active dry yeast (I use @bobsredmill). Let sit for 10 minutes. In a mixing bowl, mix 4.5 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2c white sugar, + 1tbsp olive oil. Add the yeast mixture + knead until well combined. If the mixture is dry, you can add 1-2tbsp more of water. Lightly oil a large bowl + place the dough in the middle of the bowl. Cover with a dish cloth + place in a warm, dry area. Let it sit for about 1 hour to allow the dough to double in size. Once risen, preheat the oven to 450F + start boiling a pot of water with 1/4c baking soda dissolved. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll into thin rope + twist into a pretzel shape. Dip each pretzel into the boiling water + let it cook for 30 seconds on each side. Move the pretzels onto a greased baking sheet. In a small bowl, scramble an egg then brush onto each pretzel. This is hanging on the wall in my bedroom. Its the immigration paper my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Patrick ONeill, signed when he came to this country seeking a better life at the age of 27, it was 1847. He carried this paper with him for a year until he could apply for U.S. citizenship. Soon after he was granted citizenship, around 1848, he chased the American dream west to California...and as they say, the rest is history. The luckiest of us have stories like this, others came against their will as slaves or are natives to this land and have had their land seized from them... Ive been thinking about this over the last year. The events of the last 48 hours have brought some of my greatest fears to bare. Im upset in ways I cant even begin to articulate. Beyond the fact that almost every national security expert has said these actions by Trump will make us less safe, I cant even comprehend the cruelty it takes to turn away families fleeing war, the insanity of turning away the worlds brightest minds on the way to study and research at our Universities, or the short sightedness and stupidity of telling the world that America is no longer the land of opportunity. 🌮Tacos Nachos Always and Forever, please and thank you! Here’s my dinner on repeat all this week! I seriously never get tired of this simple dish. You can use any low carb tortilla cut into triangles and either fry them in oil on medium for a few minutes per side. OR brush them with oil and then bake em in the oven (I have a mini low quality tutorial a few post back on how I do it 😬). I then arrange the tortillas “chips” on a plate and top them with my favourite toppings. I typically pair mine with seasoned ground beef, homemade white cheese sauce, homemade pico, avocado and sour cream! Seriously full for hours and totally satisfied 🤤 How do I make the white cheese sauce? In a pot, heat cream, cream cheese and a handful of shredded cheese. Stir well until smooth and melty goodness! The program, if followed correctly, teaches portion control, healthier choices and some basic nutrition information. It’s not for everyone, if you’re someone who gets fixated on calories or eating the lowest calorie foods, that can easily happen with points as well. The reason #ww gives you a certain amount of points a day,that are based on your gender, height, weight etc., is because they are in your healthy eating zone! Under-eating and overeating are equally as bad for your body and health for different reasons! I allow myself to use my weeklies on outings with friends like today, at this beer garden because I want to enjoy my life! I don’t want to live forever fixated on every single thing I put into my body. Also, weeklies are there for a reason so don’t be afraid to use them! I almost never use all of my weeklies and/or fit points but, it’s a holiday weekend. On Thursday I went to a celebratory dinner with friends where I used a ton of weeklies as well... but, it’s a marathon not a sprint! The most important part of this lifestyle/weight loss/ health journey is a mindset shift you have to make for yourself.
