The words “Never Forget” have become a seasonal phrase. Like Happy Halloween, or Merry Christmas we only say it, think of it and remember why we say it around today. 19 years later a nation has forgotten. We have forgotten our solemn promise to Never Forget. We forgot the sacrifice of our Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters who ran into burning buildings to save complete strangers, only to do it over and over, in complete disregard for their own lives. We forgot the some 200 souls who leapt to their deaths rather than face the fire at their back. We forgot the fighting spirit of Flight 93 who showed those cowardly Terrorists, that Americans are NOT victims, and we will NOT go without a fight. We forgot that amongst the carnage and debris for a short time we were One Nation Indivisible. We were united as Americans. We forgot our promise to our men and women of our warrior class. The same men and women now in their late 30’s and early 40’s were babies back then barely in their 20’s...now as middle age approaches illness is taking hold. Illnesses that do not belong in bodies of this age group. We have let time dull our vision and soften our memories. We have forgotten that “Never Forget” means exactly that. As they were being built, The Twin Towers of The World Trade Center Complex were quickly poked fun at for resembling 2 filing cabinets. But soon after completion, in 1973, they became a world icon and gave every New Yorker a sense of pride. As you crossed the Hudson into Manhattan they dwarfed all the surrounding buildings and defined the NY Skyline for 28 years. Its hard to believe that 19 years have passed since they came crumbling down. That image burned into our memory, a sad day for NY and all of America. With everything going on in the world these days, it’s important we reflect on that fatal day to not only remember all of the innocent lives lost but also the sense patriotism & UNITY it brought to us as a Nation. I was great friend with Minuro Yamasaki, we would have him over for dinner getting to know my family. He always told me he wants to build the tallest building in New York. I kept telling him if you do someone will try to build taller one. Here he is with the model of The World Trade Center back in 1969. I was asked to creat the model and photograph the process of building one of the towers. I took many images on September 11 when the towers were hit. I dont want to remember them that way. It hurts too much. One day after they were build I was walking early morning when the sun was coming up. I was a young lawyer in New York City advising on Wall Street deals. Egregious corporate scandals & a funky stock market iced the half billion dollar deal I was working on. So late on September 10, I received word that my meetings in the twin towers on the morning of September 11 were canceled. I went out to dinner that night with my dear friends @staceybnyc & @dkaysf. Sushi on the upper east side in the midst of pouring rain and youthful dreams. Rain that gave way to a brilliant autumn morning... dreams that in the aftermath gave way to hope. Hope that we could move on from the trauma, shock and pain of a day on which we lost friends, colleagues, and our sense of security. But I didn’t lose my life. I didn’t lose my sense of the possible. My sense of justice. My sense of what we could be if we chose to stand together. We pulled our friends and family close and we went back to work, to rebuild our country and our lives. I didn’t imagine then that our country might experience something a magnitude of 66 times worse than 9/11. Nor did I imagine that we would ever permit division, selfishness & greed to result in the needless death of 200,000 Americans. I didn’t imagine that I would be physically isolated, hundreds of miles away from my family and friends, or that human beings would traumatize one another by their selfishness, fear, insecurity and scapegoating in ways that would imperil the life and security of others. Back then, without experiencing how hard life could get, I prided myself on my resilience, persistent endurance, faith. It is easy to be resilient when surrounded by family and friends, when you have health insurance, financial security and a good paying job-dignity in work. TRUMP’s TWIN TOWERS II Following September 11th, many New Yorkers sought to rebuild the Twin Towers, but with more structural strength. In the 2003 design competition, Team Twin Towers proposed rebuilding the towers with bioterrorism sensors and fireproof ceramic polymer coatings around the columns, floor beams and stairs. Similarly, the 2005 Twin Towers II proposal was nearly identical to the original design by Minoru Yamasaki, although with 115 stories—5 floors taller than the original. An above-ground memorial would have occupied the footprints of the original towers and three twelve-story postmodern buildings replacing 3, 4, and 5 WTC. The project was sponsored by Donald Trump who labeled the SOM/David Childs-designed Freedom Tower as disgusting. The Freedom Tower was the winner of an international design contest sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. In media appearances, Trump criticized the proposed Freedom Tower, saying “It doesn’t represent what we want to have represented. World Trade Center Höchstes Gebäude New Yorks: 1973-2001 417 Meter Das vom japanisch-amerikanischen Architekten Minoru Yamasaki World Trade Center wurde 1962 bis 1964 entworfen. Nach seinen Plänen wurde der Komplex von 1966 bis 1977 erbaut. Zum Bau der Gebäude musste zuvor ein ganzes Stadtviertel abgerissen werden. Nach den Abbrucharbeiten folgte am 5. August 1966 die Grundsteinlegung. 1970 wurde der Bau des Nordtutm beendet. 1971 folgte dieser am Südturm. Bereits 1970 konnten die ersten Mieter in den Nordturm einziehen. 2 Jahre später in den Südturm. Die Eröffnung fand schließlich am 4. April 1973 statt. Vollständig fertiggestellt wurde der Komplex jedoch erst 1977. Der Bau verschlang über eine Milliarde US-Dollar. Beide Türme hatten jeweils eine Nutzfläche von 418.000 m² und besaß 104 superschnelle Aufzüge. Der Nordturm war mit 417 Metern knapp höher als der Südturm mit 415 Metern. Bei Fertigstellung war das World Trade Center das höchste Gebäude der Welt und löste somit das Empire State Building ab. Bereits 1974 mussten die Zwillingstürme den Titel aber wieder an den 442 Meter hohen Sears Tower in Chicago abtreten. Auf insgesamt über 930.000 m² beider Türme inklusive den Annex‘ 3WTC, 4WTC, 5WTC dem 22 stöckigem Marriott Hotel und dem erst 1987 erbauten 7WTC, arbeiteten 50.000 Menschen. Dazu kamen täglich noch etwa 80.000 Besucher hinzu. In dem Nordurms befand sich das Restaurant Windows of the World, dass viele Gäste anlockte und einen gigantischen Ausblick über Big-Apple spendete. Noch höher rauf konnte man auf den Südurm. Dieser verfügte über eine Aussichtsplattform auf dem Dach. Darüber hinaus streckte die Antenne den Turm auf eine totale Höhe von 526,4 Meter. Als am 11. September 2001 um 8:46 und 9:03 Uhr Ortszeit die Flüge AA11 und UA175 in die beiden Türme rasten, starben 2759 Menschen. Weitere 189 kamen in Washington und 44 in Shanksville bei den Flügen AA77 und UA93 um. Der als 9/11 bekannte Anschlag, ist bis heute der größte in der Geschichte der Vereinigten Staaten. Schon am 26. Februar 1993 war der Komplex Ziel eines Bombenanschlages, bei dem 6 Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Zu Füßen befindet sich seit 2012 das 9/11 Memorial. - @theforgottennyc on Instagram

I posted this six years ago. Just two weeks after moving to our new home in LA. All my heart and commitment to both cities that have taken me in and lifted me up. A LETTER TO LOS ANGELES - 9/11/14 Dear LA, I am with you all the way but today - on this day - I am in and of New York. I am so grateful for the tremendously beautiful and friendly welcome we have received but please understand, today, my heart is with my New York City. A city which, in the moment of crumbling, was fortified. Amidst the jamming and paralysis our entire city moved. In the act of snuffing out, our collective heart was ignited. LA, please, dont ask, what was it like that day? Instead, ask me WHO WAS I LIKE that day. And I will tell you I was like every other person that day; down but not out; shaken but not broken; collapsed yet still courageous. Like so many, I offered shelter and sought it amongst friends and strangers. I watched. I unlocked my door. I doubted. I picked people up at the bus stop. Like everyone, I tried to be what was needed; to be what was good in this world. I tried to be the neighbor I wanted to live next door to. I gave because I was given despite all which was taken away. We had more that day than any other day. Because that day, every single person in New York City was more than my neighbor, they were my guardian angel, and I theirs. What was I like on that day? I cannot believe it’s been 19 years since 9/11. What a memorable day for all the wrong reasons. Like so many people that day in NYC, I left for work before the first plane struck. I lived in Kingsbridge (Bronx) and worked in Brooklyn at the time. On typical day, It would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to work. I would take the number 1 or 9 train to 14th Street and transfer to the F train to Dumbo to @fatbeats When I finally transferred to the F train, the train conductor announced that there are no more trains running in NYC. Keep in mind, I still have no idea the Towers have been struck! Also I had never heard this before. So like everyone I went upstairs to call my office to say I’m going to be late but when I got upstairs not only could I not get through to my office but I also had never seen so many people on the street in NYC. I am still not knowing or aware of what was happening. I was just concerned about getting to work on time. Then I saw a line for a pay phone and stood in it. However, I heard the most horrific scream ever from 6th Ave (I was on 14th), and I went to see what it was. I just happen to look up and literally saw the second Tower fall. Obviously, I was beyond freaked out and still not knowing what was going on!. People all around me were losing their minds! It was straight chaos. Once I collected myself together, I went and sat on someone’s stoop. I was literally talking to myself and trying to figure out what to do! After pulling it together I walked.up the block. Every NYer remembers this day. It was the first or second week of my HS freshman year. I remember being in science class, and thinking it must’ve been a small plane, things will be fine. I went to an international school and we were dismissed early because they were afraid there might be an attack, since many of the UN’s diplomat kids attended the school. I left listening to the radio on my Walkman thinking things might not be fine after all. Hearing a second plane hit cemented that thought. Everyone was in shock, then I heard it. The first tower had collapsed, then the second. Kids were freaking out. The subways had been shut down, there were no ubers. Some who lived in other boroughs didn’t even know how they would get home. Luckily I lived downtown in the LES and walking was possible. There was a tension in the city, you could feel it. Sirens could be heard from every direction, traffic was gridlocked and everyone looked nervous and frantic. As I approached Houston street, where once you could see the twin towers peaking over the low rise skyline, you in saw plumes of smoke. Smoke so black, I had never seen anything like that except in Hollywood. When I got home I flipped on the tv to check out the news and for the first time ever i saw the emergency alert system on every channel (we didn’t have cable). None were working and then it hit me.
