As they were being built, The Twin Towers of The World Trade Center Complex were quickly poked fun at for resembling 2 filing cabinets. But soon after completion, in 1973, they became a world icon and gave every New Yorker a sense of pride. As you crossed the Hudson into Manhattan they dwarfed all the surrounding buildings and defined the NY Skyline for 28 years. Its hard to believe that 19 years have passed since they came crumbling down. That image burned into our memory, a sad day for NY and all of America. With everything going on in the world these days, it’s important we reflect on that fatal day to not only remember all of the innocent lives lost but also the sense patriotism & UNITY it brought to us as a Nation. 19 years ago we awoke on a beautiful day, “the kind of day that put you in a good mood” only to see the world change before our eyes. This event knocked away a naive sense, that most Americans had that we as a Nation where untouchable. The world has never been the same. At 902:57: Flight 175 crashes at about 590 mph into the south face of the World Trade Center, between floors 77 and 85. All 65 people on board the aircraft die and unknown hundreds in the building as well. I shot this from the roof of my building in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The first two are of the attack as the second plane and the third is a couple trying to comfort each other after watching the building crumble. My heart breaks a little everyone I see these images. Reposting my 9-11 story. I remember this day 19 years ago and the people who perished that morning. This was my view as seen from the top of the Chrysler building that September day. I was a lawyer doing some drudgery when a partner came in and told me a plane had hit the twin towers. As we walked around to the other side of the building to what we believed was a freak accident, a second plane hit. We watched the scene unfold in horror as the buildings burned (with a photographer next to us taking photos out the window). We never imagined the buildings would fall. Shortly after this photo was taken, the Chrysler building was evacuated and the first tower collapsed. You could see the smoke from Lexington Ave. My surreal walk home to the UES will be seared into my memory for the rest of my days — I stood at 59th street as army tucks poured across the bridge and my heart filled with dread. Newly pregnant with my first child, I was separated from my husband who was outside of the City. The Bridges closed, there were no trains and phones weren’t working. I had a primal urge to escape. While I wanted to run, scores of brave men streamed down to the site to try and rescue the trapped. Their true bravery cannot be put into words. In the aftermath, everyone came together in grief and pain. We were all New Yorkers and Americans. We wanted to help, to do something, people were lined up for almost a city block to give blood...and then the chilling realization that there were few, if any, survivors. The City and the Country mourned the losses in NY, PA and DC while brave men continued to dig through the debris. To this day I will never look at first responders the same way. I hope we all take a moment to remember those who died, those whose bravery propelled them into danger and the families that grieve anew each year. The words “Never Forget” have become a seasonal phrase. Like Happy Halloween, or Merry Christmas we only say it, think of it and remember why we say it around today. 19 years later a nation has forgotten. We have forgotten our solemn promise to Never Forget. We forgot the sacrifice of our Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters who ran into burning buildings to save complete strangers, only to do it over and over, in complete disregard for their own lives. We forgot the some 200 souls who leapt to their deaths rather than face the fire at their back. We forgot the fighting spirit of Flight 93 who showed those cowardly Terrorists, that Americans are NOT victims, and we will NOT go without a fight. We forgot that amongst the carnage and debris for a short time we were One Nation Indivisible. We were united as Americans. We forgot our promise to our men and women of our warrior class. The same men and women now in their late 30’s and early 40’s were babies back then barely in their 20’s...now as middle age approaches illness is taking hold. Illnesses that do not belong in bodies of this age group. We have let time dull our vision and soften our memories. We have forgotten that “Never Forget” means exactly that. I cannot believe it’s been 19 years since 9/11. What a memorable day for all the wrong reasons. Like so many people that day in NYC, I left for work before the first plane struck. I lived in Kingsbridge (Bronx) and worked in Brooklyn at the time. On typical day, It would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to work. I would take the number 1 or 9 train to 14th Street and transfer to the F train to Dumbo to @fatbeats When I finally transferred to the F train, the train conductor announced that there are no more trains running in NYC. Keep in mind, I still have no idea the Towers have been struck! Also I had never heard this before. So like everyone I went upstairs to call my office to say I’m going to be late but when I got upstairs not only could I not get through to my office but I also had never seen so many people on the street in NYC. I am still not knowing or aware of what was happening. I was just concerned about getting to work on time. Then I saw a line for a pay phone and stood in it. However, I heard the most horrific scream ever from 6th Ave (I was on 14th), and I went to see what it was. I just happen to look up and literally saw the second Tower fall. Obviously, I was beyond freaked out and still not knowing what was going on!. People all around me were losing their minds! It was straight chaos. Once I collected myself together, I went and sat on someone’s stoop. I was literally talking to myself and trying to figure out what to do! After pulling it together I walked.up the block. TRUMP’s TWIN TOWERS II Following September 11th, many New Yorkers sought to rebuild the Twin Towers, but with more structural strength. In the 2003 design competition, Team Twin Towers proposed rebuilding the towers with bioterrorism sensors and fireproof ceramic polymer coatings around the columns, floor beams and stairs. Similarly, the 2005 Twin Towers II proposal was nearly identical to the original design by Minoru Yamasaki, although with 115 stories—5 floors taller than the original. An above-ground memorial would have occupied the footprints of the original towers and three twelve-story postmodern buildings replacing 3, 4, and 5 WTC. The project was sponsored by Donald Trump who labeled the SOM/David Childs-designed Freedom Tower as disgusting. The Freedom Tower was the winner of an international design contest sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. In media appearances, Trump criticized the proposed Freedom Tower, saying “It doesn’t represent what we want to have represented. What I want to see built is the World Trade Center stronger and maybe a story taller, and that’s what everybody wants.” Should the original Twin Towers have been rebuilt?
