09-09-1939 Polish cavalry brigade during combat in the Battle of the Bzura By September 9, general Kutrzeba found himself in a dire situation because German forces were close to surrounding his units near Stryków. The Polish had no other option than to start an offensive to avoid a German encirclement. On the evening of September 9, Polish forces, consisting of Army Poznań and Army Pomorze, launched an offensive better known as the Battle of the Bzura. The Germans did not expect a counteroffensive because they thought that the Polish resistance had been broken already. The defense of the German 8th army was therefore weak, which made it an easy target. A remarkable detail is the fact that the Polish forces included one of the last cavalry brigades. Because these men on horses made no chance against the German panzer divisions, the cavalry changed its strategies. Instead of going into battle on their horses, the cavalry was mainly used as mobile reserve unites that could move quickly between different battles. Once arrived at a battle, the men would fight like ordinary soldiers equipped with anti-tank guns and normal rifles. Even though the Polish offensive was a success at first, the German air superiority and the larger number of German soldiers forced the Polish to retreat to Polish capital on September 19th. The Battle of Bzura lasted 11 days and is considered to be the largest battle during the invasion of Poland. ————————————————— #worldwar2 #ww2 #wwii #secondworldwar #Cavalry #Poznán #Kriegsmarine #America #wehrmacht #blitzkrieg #navy #wehrmacht #luftwaffe #royalairforce #war #history #nazi #ushistory #Germany ##germanhistory #battle #warzone #Italy #sovietunion #usa #britain #France #Poland #invasionofpoland - @ww2recaptured on Instagram

Could France really beat Germany in ? The Saar offensive. In 1939, Germany invaded Poland which, according to legend, was abandoned by the British wanting peace at all cost and the French cowards. This is of course false, but there are also reasons why the French did not attack Germany in September 1939. First of all, it should be said that for the possible French attack which will take place in the Saar, only 9 divisions could be liberated, consequence of the total lack of preparation of the French army, both in mobilization and in equipment. When they crossed the German border on September 7, the French, after advancing a few kilometers, came across thousands of mines, bridges and cut trees and other traps. The losses are so important in the minefields that the French are sometimes forced to retreat. The French only fell on abandoned villages where everything important was destroyed and a few German soldiers who inflicted however 2000 losses on the French who only had time to approach the Siegfried line. In mid-September, faced with the weak advance of the units engaged and the situation in Poland, the French high command ordered its troops to fall back behind the Maginot line. We will now see why the French did not rush regardless of the losses towards the interior of Germany. First of all, you have to understand the French strategy. They come out traumatized by the 1st world war and base their strategies on defense, behind the Maginot line which absorbed a significant part of the national budget. It is simply impossible for the French to abandon the Maginot line. In addition, on the German side, the defenses are well organized. The Siegfried line, although less powerful than the Maginot line, is still impressive for the french. Further south, the Rhine river and the mountains of the thick black forest prevent any intrusion. The 22 German divisions of Army Group C under General Van Leeb guarding the French border would have had ample time to delay, with limited assistance from the Siegfried Line, the French offensive, Belgium and the Netherlands being still neutral to the time. The Battle of Kiev (Aug. 23 – Sept. 26 1941) . The Battle of Kiev was fought between the German Army Group South and the Red Army during Operation Barbarossa. While the German Army Group Central had successfully captured the cities of Minsk and Smolensk, Army Group South faced more resistance in their advance. On the 3th of August, the führer had given the controversial order to Heinz Guderian that Army Group Central’s 2nd Panzer army and 2nd Infantry army had to stop their advance onto Moscow and support Army Group South in their encirclement of Kiev. . The battle of Kiev started on the 23th of August. The strategy was again to trap the Soviet’s Army groups in a large pocket. The Germans were in the advantage because they had complete air superiority and the Red Army had lost a significant amount of tanks in previous battles. By the 1st of September, the circle started to shape itself around the Red Army troops and the order was given by the Soviet’s High Command that every army group had to hold their line. By September 13, the 9th and the 3th panzer division made contact with each other east of Kiev, completing the encirclement. Inside the pocket there was no communication and mass confusion among the Red Army soldiers. This was made even worse when the Germans started trapping every encircled group into their own small pocket. The Red Army soldiers were under constant artillery, tank and air bombardment. On the 19th of September, the city of Kiev surrenders and seven days later all the trapped army groups surrendered to the Germans. A small group of Red Army soldiers managed to escape, but most of them were either killed, captured or missing. . The battle of Kiev was a massive success for the Axis powers and a huge blow for the Soviets. Around 616,000 Soviets were killed, captured or missing and the Red Army lost 2,5 full army groups. The encirclement trapped over 450,000 soldiers, which made it the largest human encirclement in military history. . . Was it a strategic succes or not? Comment below! 👇 . Waffen SS soldiers in eastern front @regiment_germania . 🇺🇸The Waffen-SS (SS Fighters) were an armed force of Nazi Germany born in March 1933 as a military arm of the SS. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. The Waffen-SS participated in almost all the battles of the Second World War; their soldiers gave proof of combativeness, efficiency and strong ideological motivation to the point that, on the one hand, they were guilty of brutal episodes of summary violence against civilians and prisoners of war and, on the other, often showed an excessive and reckless disdain for danger. . . . . . . #war #ww2 #ww #ss #worldwar2 #worldwarii #worldwar2german #wehrmacht #waffenss #warsaw #warm #worldwartwo #worldwar2photos #world #gun #soldier #history #ww1 #ww2history #soviet #follow #ww1 #secondworldwar #warhistory #_germanww2_ #worldwar2history #germany🇩🇪 - @world.war_2_germany on Instagram
