Students enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology Program at ULM visited students in our Early Head Start Centers this week. They volunteer to provide speech pathology services giving our children assistance with developing their speech each fall and spring semester. We are excited to have them back in our classrooms! We are currently accepting applications for pregnant moms and children under 3 for Early Head Start. The program provides early, continuous, intensive, and comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income infants and toddlers, children with disabilities, and their families, and pregnant women and their families. 🔥Brain Train Tuesday🔥- Crush your anxiety FAST with Belly Box Breathing Before you get started, make sure that you’re seated upright in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor. Try to be in a stress-free, quiet environment where you can focus on your breathing. Keeping your hands relaxed in your lap with your palms facing up, focus on your posture. You should be sitting up straight. This will help you take deep breaths. Step 1: Slowly exhale Sitting upright, slowly exhale through your mouth, getting all the oxygen out of your lungs. Focus on this intention and be conscious of what you’re doing. Step 2: Slowly inhale Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose to the count of four. In this step, count to four very slowly in your head.try Feel the air fill your lungs, one section at a time, until your lungs are completely full and the air moves into your abdomen. Step 3: Hold your breath Hold your breath for another slow count of four. Step 4: Exhale again Exhale through your mouth for the same slow count of four, expelling the air from your lungs and abdomen. Be conscious of the feeling of the air leaving your lungs. Step 5: Hold your breath again Hold your breath for the same slow count of four before repeating this process. When Dani isnt saving lives, you can find her volunteering with us. Are you scared of phone banking? Do you think every caller is going to yell at you? 😅 Dani was scared too and she had a great time! 🦴 I’ve got a bone to pick tonight. And not for the first time... I wrote a whole blog post about it a year or two ago. But since I haven’t yet changed an entire culture, I’m gonna say it again! 😉 PLEASE STOP TELLING US... “as long as your kiddo is happy and healthy, you’re doing great!” Or any version of this. It’s said all the time. I just saw it again this evening. In Instagram comments, in parents’ groups, in doctor appointments. In endless cutesy memes. It comes from good intentions. As if to say, any parenting choice is ok... AS LONG AS your kiddo is the holy grail of happy and healthy. And to be clear, yes, that’s what we all long for. And guess what? These days, that’s what I’ve got. And it is glorious. Two generally happy, healthy, growing boys. But I had a solid 8 plus months of “colic”. 5 months of no growth for Miles. Months of food reactions and angry tummies. Months of wondering why the only thing everyone kept saying mattered, I couldn’t achieve with my kids. And so many of you have chronically ill kiddos and medically complex kiddos and I’m just here to shout it again... happy and healthy is not the measure of your success as a parent. Keep advocating, keep showing up, keep trying anything and everything for these challenging kiddos, but don’t let anyone tell you if you haven’t arrived at happy and healthy, you aren’t enough.
