Regi is our most critical koala in care. This is his story. On the 20th of August, Regi was attacked by a dog in a backyard. You see, Regi lives in suburbia where koala habitat barely exists now, so he survives as best as he can, dodging cars and dogs. He had been doing quite well (he last came into care 4 years ago when he had a misadventure). He was released back to his home after that short stay with us and had remained in that location ever since. 5 months ago, a family with a dog moved in to Regis territory. Unfortunately, Regi encountered the dog and bravely fought for his life. His arms were covered in bites, as well as his head and rump. Our vet and nurse team (Jackie and Marley) worked on him at night for hours into the early hours of the morning. It was touch and go for a long time as more traumatised tissue died off and he battled infection and gut issues due to treatment with antibiotics. Now he has finally started to heal. He is not out of the woods yet and is receiving regular bandage changes and constant monitoring. The dog was also injured as well as the owner who was horrified that the incident had occurred and was completely unaware that Regi lived in the area. The home owners now know that dogs and koalas do not mix and we have helped to educate them. Hopefully we can get Regi back where he belongs, with a few impressive scars that he can show his mates. Drumroll please..meet ex-orphan….. Bruce! 99.9% sure it’s him. When I posted the very first photo of wild boy ‘Dylan’, one of our long time joey sponsors Lauren, got in touch immediately and said she thought Dylan looked like Bruce, who was an orphan here back in 2017. Lauren has sponsored joeys with us since the beginning and Bruce was her ‘first love’. He was my first love too, so my heart broke when Bruce then became the first male to leave us after release in mid 2018. All ex-orphans are free to move on and live wherever they please, and the kangaroos do what is natural to them. The females tend to stay close to home, while many of the males move on to find potential mates. After Bruce left, I had to accept that I would likely never see him again. When I posted the photo of Dylan last night, capturing his face that way, and having posted a ‘baby’ photo of Bruce the day prior, it hit me. Those big beautiful round eyes of Dylan’s which captured my heart, have captured it once before. I’m now positive that Dylan is Bruce! Bruce was born around 14 Sep 2016 and would be just over 4 years old now… the same age I gave Dylan when he arrived. The way Dylan parades around under the veranda like he owns the place, the way he digs through the snacks to find his favourite bits, and even the way he had a go at young Kymbah last night to keep the snacks to himself. All familiar traits of the ex-orphan kangaroos here. The huge alpha-male who came by last week to breed with Penny. Remember him? Well once he’d done his breeding, he returned to the back paddock again and left our mob alone to return to his own mob. Bruce (Dylan) doesn’t do that, he’s become a permanent fixture and one that our big males like Kanku and Brutus are not the least bothered about. Probably because they know him right? Last night, I posted these photos on my personal FB page to get some feedback from friends who care for kangaroos and the consensus was that Dylan is indeed our very own beloved Bruce. Welcome home again Bruce. I’m so delighted to have you here. Seriously... go through these 5 pics and tell me it’s not the same kangaroo in all of them. We joyfully announce the debut of Phoenix daughter of Holly. This photo was taken @clelandwildlifepark by @ashhunter1 Ashleigh (Ash) was one of the Cleland triage team that helped us in the dark days of January. Holly was rescued (and named) by Ash and the team and only much later they discovered that Holly was carrying a fire baby. Last month when I visited Cleland I thought it appropriate to name her Phoenix. There are many fire babies at HBWS (mostly kangaroo and wallaby but also brush tail possum and koala).Keeping with longstanding tradition very few will be named. I hope to post photos of Phoenixs HBWS bushfire baby cousins in the near future. I have seen them but just cant get a good shot yet. As the weather warms and they spend more time out of the pouch my chances will get better. Like Phoenix, HBWS is slowly rising from the ashes and we grow more confident that the best is yet to come. I would like to express our gratitude to all those who have rallied around us from all over the world. And her name is… drum roll 🥁… Sapphire! Our newest and final koala joey of the year! To celebrate her arrival, we threw her a little Naming Party 🎉 . The name Sapphire was carefully and unanimously selected by our keepers because it represents her importance to koalas and the zoo. Sapphires are precious gemstones and we consider our koalas to be particularly precious, especially given the threat to their population 💎🐨💎. Sapphire joins 11-month-old Jasper and 12-month-old Ilani as the last of our koala joeys for 2020. She will spend the next four months cuddling up to mum Scarlet before finding her independence and roaming around freely on her own. September is National Biodiversity Month and today is International Threatened Species Day: a day that turns the spotlight on native plants, animals and ecosystems that are under threat, while also celebrating species success stories and ongoing threatened species recovery work. The day also celebrates the amazing work of passionate Park Rangers, conservationists, researchers, volunteers and wildlife warriors. 👏 Here’s one of the Wildlife Ambassadors you can meet at David Fleay Wildlife Park: a bridled nailtail wallaby. Bridled nailtail wallabies are threatened macropods that were thought to be extinct for over 30 years, before being re-discovered in central Queensland in 1973! Today, their populations are closely monitored in designated scientific nature reserves. Due to intense conservation efforts including habitat protection, biosecurity measures, captive breeding and educational awareness, their numbers are steadily increasing. David Fleay Wildilfe Park in @destinationgoldcoast is the only wildlife park in the world where visitors can see this wallaby and just last week, we received four pouch-young bridled nailtail wallabies as part of the Department of Environment’s program to save the endangered macropods… so make sure you drop in for a visit very soon to meet Flash and the new arrivals!
