Today is National Threatened Species Day - an important day in Australias history. It was on this day in 1936 that the last remaining Tasmanian tiger slipped over the extinction line. It is also a necessary time to focus on how we will prevent further extinctions events. . Today, WWF-Australia and Biolink have released a heartbreaking report on the impact of Australias koalas during the catastrophic bushfires of 2019-20. At one of six firegrounds surveyed, researchers found no evidence that any of the koalas there survived, resulting in a reported 71% decline in koalas after the bushfires. . @WWF_australia is one of many organisations fighting to save bushfire impacted wildlife. We said we had a surprise! Well introducing ASH! Ash was rescued by a young girl Zoe who did a pouch check on a Wombat that had been hit by a car and passed away. Luckily Zoe was in a car that eventually drove past who stopped and pulled her to safety to check her pouch, which contained a Joey. Zoe drove the joey to Anna knowing she was a Wires carer. This was in the time of the horrible bush fires and when Zoe arrived, the air was thick and they were all covered in Ash…so Ash he is! Meet Hope. Currumbin Wildlife Hospital has rescued a devastatingly high number of koalas from the ongoing Queensland bushfires. Baby Hope is not one of them... Hope was born at Currumbin after her pregnant mother was wounded by a car earlier this year. We joyfully announce the debut of Phoenix daughter of Holly. This photo was taken @clelandwildlifepark by @ashhunter1 Ashleigh (Ash) was one of the Cleland triage team that helped us in the dark days of January. Holly was rescued (and named) by Ash and the team and only much later they discovered that Holly was carrying a fire baby. Last month when I visited Cleland I thought it appropriate to name her Phoenix. There are many fire babies at HBWS (mostly kangaroo and wallaby but also brush tail possum and koala).Keeping with longstanding tradition very few will be named. I hope to post photos of Phoenixs HBWS bushfire baby cousins in the near future. I have seen them but just cant get a good shot yet. As the weather warms and they spend more time out of the pouch my chances will get better. Like Phoenix, HBWS is slowly rising from the ashes and we grow more confident that the best is yet to come. I would like to express our gratitude to all those who have rallied around us from all over the world. Just the type of news we needed! 😍 Healesville Sanctuary has welcomed baby Wirra, a precious koala joey to mum Emily. 🐨 Wirra is a Woiwurrung word, meaning “climb” and we’re so excited to welcome this bundle of joy to the sanctuary. Emily and Wirra are the southern subspecies of koala, slightly larger and fluffier than their northern cousins. Southern koala populations were badly affected by the summer 2020 bushfires earlier this year, so Wirra brings hope to the recovery of their species. - @zoosvictoria on Instagram

- When quokkas were first discovered by Europeans, the Dutch explorers who saw them thought they were giant rats, and named their island Rats Nest Island (Rottnest Island). Quokkas are actually marsupials, though! They have very little fear of humans and are known to follow humans closely.

Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials that are native to Australia. They are about 1 m (40 in) in length with small, stubby tails and weigh between 20 and 35 kg (44 and 77 lb). There are three extant species and they are all members of the family Vombatidae. They are adaptable and habitat tolerant, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of southern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 ha (740 acres) in Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland. Female wombats give birth to a single young after a gestation period of roughly 20-30 days, which varies between species. All species have well-developed pouches, which the young leave after about six to seven months. Wombats are weaned after 15 months, and are sexually mature at 18 months. A group of wombats is known as a wisdom, a mob, or a colony.
