Longevity and Performance *** Performance is something that is super, highly valued because it speaks to our higher capacity...whether its on a personal level or a professional level. Its this higher capacity that everyone wants to really move towards. That being said, as much as I love to push clients and clients love to push themselves in the gym, sacrifice everyday to go to those higher levels of performance, from a long term perspective this doesn’t make the most sense. I understand what the big picture goal is for each one of my clients and as eager as we may be to get there, our goals are not going to be reached overnight. We prioritize longevity and from that longevity standpoint, its going to feed into higher performance. But not just higher quality performance short term. Its higher quality performance over the long haul, so that you can keep going for a longer period of time at a higher level. From a professional level - do you want a career that is a flash in the pan for 3 years or one that lasts 10 years? That is why it is important to have sessions and periods of training that are not focused on pushing the limits of performance but, allowing the body to actually adapt to the stimuli you have been exposing your body to during training. I have some clips from today’s training session with Matt. After weeks of intensive training, battered and bruised from the basketball court I decided to throw in simple movement patterns, some ground based variability and allowing Matt to explore with his body, feel safe as a tall dude low to the ground, build confidence and awareness with his hinge movement and more confidence that his back will hold up post an injury... in a dense, aerobic circuit format for 30 minutes after preparation. As I prepare for the Kodiak 100 coming up in September I reflect on why I challenge myself to do what many of the people around me describe as crazy or insane and how ultra-marathons have impacted my life. What I discovered that day, changed my life and the way I view challenges I face. If I work hard enough and are disciplined enough I can accomplish more than I ever thought possible. Put one foot in front of the other, then repeat. You are never too young or old to find your passion. Coming into 2019, I had lost my passion for many things in life. I had to make wholesale changes or continue to struggle. Trail running saved me. The friendships and people in this community are truly special. No egos, just genuine love of life and nature. High fives and encouragement on the trail are just part of it. Sharing miles with a stranger in the middle of nowhere, seeing nature and taking in life with running parters that last a lifetime. You can’t replicate. I had so much fun preparing for this event and all the people I have met along the way have been unreal. Seeing Nick and Noah throughout this time as part of my pit crew and being part of this day. Hugging them at the finish. Something I will never ever forget or let go of. Proud to be their pops! Makes me tear up to think about 😭 Lastly, to my boy Charles who asked me to help find his soul on the mountain that he left up there the year prior. Over there on the @triarcsystems YouTube channel, we sat down and started discussing the basics of setting up the ultimate, shortest, “do all” rifle. ___ In multiple parts, we discuss barrel length, buffers, ammunition, furniture, glass, and various backup sighting systems. ___ I love this 10.5 sbr with the @unitytactical mounted T2, but the platform itself has some limitations that don’t make it the best all around base stick. Want to ring the bell in style next year at @brokenarrowskyrace !? Well here’s another pro tip to increase efficiency, turnover, and help injury prevention. ⠀ ⠀ Strides, post run pickups, or shuttle runs (if you remember those) provides a means to train your body into being more comfortable at faster speeds. A stride is a 50-200 m progressive sprint, often accompanied by walking or jogging rest. The venue is anything you want, flat for speed junkies like myself, uphill if you fancy some explosiveness, or downhill if you’re looking to rip but are training at 8000 ft +. ⠀ ⠀ So how do you incorporate them into training? I’d recommend starting twice a week with 1 set of 4-6 reps, generally the day before a big effort. As you get stronger you can add them into almost every run. In college we would do between 80-100 strides a week. ⠀ ⠀ What does a stride look like? ⠀ 1) always make sure you’re warmed up⠀ 2) build into the sets. No ballistic movements or sprinting. Subir cuestas: ideal para fortalecer el tren inferior Lo sabes: el día que te toca el entrenamiento de cuestas vas a sufrir en las subidas (aunque probablemente también disfrutarás en las bajadas). Las cuestas de 30 segundos en sprint, o de uno o dos minutos a un ritmo constante o progresivo nos ayudan a fortalecer todo nuestro tren inferior: un entrenamiento ideal de cara a la larga distancia. Durante las subidas, el impacto que reciben nuestras articulaciones es bastante menor que el que solemos generar en llano. Eso sí, lo compensamos con un trabajo intenso de glúteos, isquiotibiales y gemelos, todos formando parte de la cadena muscular posterior. También trabajan el flexor de la cadera, que nos ayuda a elevar las piernas para dar las zancadas, y los cuádriceps, que nos ayudan a impulsarnos hacia arriba. Bajar cuestas: control y estabilidad El momento de la bajada, aunque nos puede parecer mucho más sencillo que la subida, es en realidad más crítico a la hora de sufrir una lesión. Generalmente la bajada la realizamos después de haber subido una cuesta, cuando nuestro cuerpo acusa más cansancio, y el hecho de tener a nuestro favor la fuerza de la gravedad puede hacer que nos descontrolemos y que terminemos en el suelo. Durante las bajadas el impacto articular es mucho mayor que en las subidas o que sobre terreno llano, razón por la cual muchas personas experimentan dolor en las rodillas después de una bajada pronunciada. Además, durante las bajadas el trabajo de los músculos es de contracción excéntrica (mientras se encuentran alargados), y puede generar microrroturas musculares que nos pueden pasar factura. Integra las cuestas en tu rutina poco a poco, combinando en distintos entrenamientos diferentes intensidades y tiempos. This last little challenge is by NO MEANS the biggest feat ever completed but it has served its purpose - when you keep getting thrown out of the boat, you have to take control of the paddle! Walking and running 500km (the length of Singapore 10 times over) in 5 weeks (the time it took to heal my broken arm) is kind of relentless. I like to do things hard and fast and get them over with. But this took TIIIMMME. Especially when you also have to do life around it. To some this will be meh whatever, but to others it will be a lot. It doesn’t matter where you are because this is where I was and it was something I wanted to get done. If you’re struggling with something, choose one thing to aim for, anything, that will deflect the attention away from yourself and your troubles. Ive been coaching @adelesetl for nearly 2 years. And in that time Ive seen truly remarkable accomplishments take place. And now at 45... shes running faster than shes ever thought possible. This past spring was a mile at 5:15. Prior to that she ran beautifully with a 5k at 18:19. Last fall season she broke the 3 hour barrier for the first time in her life with 2:55:32! A loving wife and mother of 2... she knows the juggle of life all too well. Its been an amazing journey of growth and development for Adele but the numbers arent what really gets me excited. Today Adele raced a solo 13.1 mile effort. A friend was kind enough to ride a bike along side the hills of Ireland where they live... but... aside from that she was completely solo. My mission for Adele was to take a risk and run this thing hard. But for whatever reason... today was simply not that day. Around 25 to 30 seconds per mile slower than we expected - i was worried a major disappointment would set in. Her reaction though... is one I am so proud of. One of a true leader and friend. She was able to look past the finish time and look at the effort. She recognized straight away that today wasnt her day... but rather than quit... she forged ahead and did was she could. She showed up and gave her best with every mile that came. 1:25:10 - not the time we wanted but still her 2nd fastest half marathon. We arent done yet though... we have many more miles to run. First month back since the Achilles went (again) ✅ . Blah blah blah I love running, blah blah blah it’s great being back, you’ve heard it all before. . Every time I got hurt over the last 2 years has been when I was transitioning towards more intense interval work and running quicker than 5k pace/effort, I’ve tried so much rehab and treatment but I think so many years of running has meant my Achilles just can’t quite handle the intensity and speed of 1500-5k training, so rather than continue on this cycle of injuries, I thought let’s give the longer distance a bloody good bash and the big goal is to run London Marathon next year. A huge thank you to our supporter Lorna Stanger, from Caithness, for raising an incredible £5,142 to help people living with cancer find their best way through. Lorna endured a jaw-dropping duathlon, running and cycling 755-miles over five days - starting from her home, running from Thurso to Inverness and cycling the famous North Coast 500. Wow! 😮 The original plan of running back to Thurso after cycling the North Coast 500 had to be changed, due to a knee injury. Determined to finish the challenge as planned, Lorna ran from Inverness to Thurso covering 112 miles in one day, only two weeks after completing the duathlon 🚲 🏃♀️ Covering the 755 miles of remote landscape, Lorna certainly wasnt alone. She was cheered on by friends, family and car horns tooting in support. Lorna is pictured here in our Macmillan greens: Wearing my Macmillan t-shirt made a huge difference. Achievement Unlocked: Marathon! Cold early starts through the winter was so worth the feeling I had when I crossed the toilet paper line. My brother in law Adam suggested I come for a run with him back in April. I thought I was helping him out train for a marathon, little did I know he was helping me out. Besides the soul searching, the long thoughts you have in these types of runs and the chaffing, I found a reason to get up early on the weekends and I found a new found strength I never knew I had inside me. Thanks Adam 💙 Nothing can compare you for the 42.195km run, no amount of training, praying or carb loading... Im certain I wouldnt have got through today without the support of my family, you know who you are. Thank you. Whilst these endorphins wear off and I slowly sink into my 3rd beer (well earned I may add) I have a message for all of you who have so graciously continued reading all the way to the end of this post. NEVER let anyone tell you you cant do it. It doesnt matter how small or big your goals or ambitions are.. Just go for it. “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!” At least that’s what it can sound like in our head. Despite many saying I’m one of the happiest, positive injured people they’ve ever met, I definitely face the same thing. I have absoLUTELY felt the weight of a knee injury that is now going to require surgery and extended recovery time. • Pain or injury is never fun. But it can sure heighten the sense of feeling: - depressed - sad - frustrated - downright angry - “Why me? Why this? Why now?” And those feelings can get overwhelming. They make it challenging to focus on anything else BUT the pain or injury. • Think about it though. That’s EXACTLY what it’s doing: heightening the intensity of our focus. It is, however, up to us to choose where we then direct that focus. • It’s not about ignoring or suppressing all those emotions we experience. In fact DON’T! They are a part of the process. They are a part of the guidance and discovery. Acknowledge them, accept them... but work through them. Don’t succumb to them. • We are feeling these for a reason. Use them as the ‘signposts’, the ‘breadcrumbs’, the ‘tracks’ to discovering WHY you are feeling them so intensely. What is the injury: - limiting - holding you back from - keeping out of reach Use the intensity of focus that the current pain or injury is giving you access to, amidst an attention grabbing world of distraction, to go deeper in your Journey. Nesse dia, a um ano atrás, eu conclui a minha 5a maratona na @bamaraton. Ela não saiu exatamente como planejei. Longe disso! Quebrei por volta da passagem da meia. A corrida simplesmente deixou de fluir, o ritmo deixou de encaixar e a cabeça falhou. Fui pra lá buscando o sub 4 e perceber que ele não viria, me travou. Pelos 21 kms seguintes alternei corre anda e resolvi curtir a prova ao invés de sofrer. E foi “ tudo bem “!!! Uma experiência rica em aprendizados.... sobre não desistir, sobre não sofrer, sobre ser forte e sobre seguir em frente. Esse ano não teve maratona por conta da pandemia e o repeteco desse dia de sensações ímpares foi postergado por mais um tempinho. Since I cant go to the gym Ill just post pics of cardio from now until forever. Thanks to #COVID19 Monday 2 mile run. Tuesday 5 mile ruck AND hit 5 sets of 3 @480 deadlifts. Wednesday we did 6 quarter mile repeats at a 5:27 pace. Thursday hit a top single of 405 @RPE8 on squats. Friday finished off with a 5K at a 7:33 pace. I missed my class today with @taomovement_ldn as Mason and I were cowering under the subway to avoid the rain! However, I still managed to get some practice in of the challenge he set me! Scrolling through insta over the last week or two all I’ve seen is these amazing pictures of people amazing things in terms of strength and body positions. What we don’t see is how much work people put into such things and how many times they actually fail before smashing it. It doesn’t just happen over night. I’ve been practicing this pose all week at random times and today was first time I managed to hold it, only for two seconds though! Anyway, swipe right to see a couple of my failures and how I nearly re-arranged my face!!! Take inspiration from what you see on Instagram, but don’t beat yourself up because you don’t look like someone or you can’t do something they can do! CrossFit Games 2020. Congrats to all the athletes who competed under these weird circumstances....not easy without the magic of Madison! Huge respect to the top 5 girls who earned their spot to compete at Aromas later this year. Well earned 🙌🏼 As most of you know, I got my games spot taken away when cuts were made pre games due to covid. My coach/husband and I decided it was best I ‘compete’ in the games regardless and simulate the competition in the best way we could. Upon completion of this weekend, I finished within the top 20 overall. (Unintentional repeat of last year)😂 I placed quite high in a couple of events, but also going into the weekend I knew there were going to be some major tests for me too. I can confidently move forward onto next year knowing I proved to myself I once again belong. ☑️ So....Where do we go from here you ask?
