This one was special for me. I remember being nine years old and watching Jay-Z’s music video for “Change Clothes” play on VH1 about ten times a day. Each time I would stop and marvel at it, in genuine awe of its environment, so far removed from the lifestyle that it portrayed. I was captivated by Naomi Campbell and Omahyra Mota. I wondered what it must be like to attend a fashion show, to sit front row, to ever feel attractive or be celebrated, or to be viewed as successful or glamorous. Five years later, I very serendipitously (and unexpectedly) got to live that life, and now seventeen years later, I got to speak to Omahyra for The Provocateur about the industry, her career, the strength that it takes to be unapologetically yourself, and (most importantly) remaining selfless and compassionate throughout your life. A full circle moment. Omahyra, you are the sweetest and most gracious person, and what a privilege it was to have you on board for this. Back To The Future: At the height of lockdown and unable to create new shoots, Suburbia worked with Oscar-winning digital effects house @framestore to add the A/W 2020 collections to photographs we curated from the impressive #BritishVogue archive. Digital versions of the clothes were painstakingly built from reference materials, including stills from the fashion shows, and then seamlessly inserted into the original images. In this post we have #DavidBailey’s iconic 1974 image of #BiancaJagger reimagined with her original dress and choker switched to @MaisonValentino’s leather bustier dress with a necklace by @Dior. And, we replaced #MarisaBerenson’s original dress from the October 1973 cover by #HelmutNewton with a velvet coat from @GiorgioArmani and a diamond choker by @Bulgari.
