For subscribers, the cat has been out of the bag for a couple of weeks, but today I am deeply PROUD to celebrate my first feature story on the physical pages of the October issue of @natgeo Magazine. Not only is the personal feeling one that causes a welling in the eyes, the feeling of giving a threatened species exposure on the pages of this respected platform—is of deep satisfaction, and gratification. . I grew up ensconced in the pages of National Geographic. I was enamoured with the oceans of @daviddoubilet , as I’d grown up next to the Red Sea, and his pictures, no matter what water body they were taken in, took me back to the only place I’ve ever called Home. NG was my animal dream world, the pages where magic happened, and the place where I got all the facts for my middle school reports. I’m not sure then that I wanted to be the photographer, but, I wanted to be with the animals-the way the photographers on those pages got to be with the animals. . Today I’m grateful and humbled. Thank you to @rachel_nuwer for the wonderful reporting, to @alexa_keefe and @kfmoran the trust in assigning this to me, and @evertonbpmiranda & Charles Munn for the incredible and thankless work you are doing to bring light to and help the magical Harpy Eagle. 22 meters up, in the forest canopies of South America, lives Harpia Harpyja. Their forests are threatened by human destruction—deforestation and fires, but, they persevere. If you are ever able to see this species in person, please take the opportunity. To watch this eagle exist, is to affirm our smallness as humans; it’s a truly humbling experience. . I’d put more of the story here, but, I’m just going to smile and say, “read it in the magazine!’ because today I can. Thank you to all who made this happen. The October issue is a personal milestone. If the sight of this poor lioness breaks your heart, then imagine the damage and pain the poachers snare caused. This lioness was caught in a poachers snare for weeks on end. The snare wrapped tight around his head causing deep wounds that turned dangerously septic. She was only rescued by @ugwildlife and a team of vets who attended to her before it was too late. She was a lucky one. Most animals including giraffes, elephants and buffalo get caught in indiscriminate poachers snares in Murchison Falls. Despite the governments best efforts, snares have kept causing untold damage to wildlife in protected areas. What can you do? As a Ugandan speak to your village mates about the importance of conservation. Encourage fellow citizens to engage in productive wildlife conservation activities. In addition, demand for more funding to wildlife conservation which remain the biggest pillar of tourism in Uganda. Now THIS is what we call an amazing photo! These two camera trap photos were taken an hour apart and then put together using a digital program. The otter crossing the channel suddenly stopped for a few seconds at that point - there it caught the smell of wolves, turned back and disappeared much faster than appeared. It’s always amazing how well these bad boys can hide. We had watched this group of bulls bed down on this hill side a few hours earlier with a bull that Rod was pumped to go after. After a good hike up the adjacent draw we began the search to try and locate where the group had bedded. After a few hours we were able to finally see some movement and this bull made himself known and helped us to locate the group. Now it was the waiting game to see if the bull we were after would clear the trees before it got dark and within range. Ah, the elusive and fantastic pine marten! Martens may avoid open ground to reduce the risk of predation. Pine martens aren’t confined to woodland, but each animal requires from 86 to 166 hectares of woodland within its territory.   ​ ​Once found across Britain, the pine marten was prone to persecution until relatively recently. Though it has recovered a little from a dramatic decline, the species is still rare. Scotland’s population is estimated at 3,700 adult pine martens. The species was given full legal protection in 1988. Pine martens are once again established across much of Scotland north of the central belt, with outlying populations in parts of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. With a team member critically wounded by a rhino, @biglifeafrica Ranger Parmeres Jacob Leiyan knew what to do. He also knew he had very little time to do it. The rhino was still nearby while Parmeres used his cap to pack the wound, then he applied pressure to stop the bleeding. ⛑Theres not much time left this Financial Year to help train Rangers working on the frontline of conservation - visit the link in our bio to support Ranger training. 🦏The rhino had surprised the team while they were on patrol in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills area, with one Ranger gored through both legs before he could get up a tree. Parmeres drew on his @lead_ranger critical-bleed-control training and a lot of courage to save a life. @sheldricktrust were able to provide a helicopter for the emergency evacuation. Mercifully, one less name to add to the Honour Roll of Fallen Rangers. Thanks to those who have given so much already to @thingreenlinefoundation EOFY training appeal. Parmeres didn’t hesitate and his actions saved a life. The Highway The Carretera Austral spans over 1240 km of Chiles wildest country between Puerto Montt and Villa OHiggins. You would think that a project that crosses half of Patagonia should have been built considering their neighbors, but no, there are zero wildlife crossings. Some parts of this road are yet to be built, and again, the project doesnt contemplate any wildlife crossings. I have been documenting the wildlife occurring in the outline of the upcoming road project in the valley of the Reñihué river, one of the few places left in Chile where animals can freely roam between the Andes and the Ocean without ever having to cross a road. The results are compelling. Güiñas, pudus, pumas and many other animals live in this area. A project this big and so poorly planned will threaten their very existence. This photo depicts a puma using the very trail where the highway is supposed to be build, as indicated by the sign installed by Chiles Ministerio de Obras Públicas. The message is clear enough, we are building over occupied territory. Shot for Reñihué Nature Conservnacy Foundation. La Carretera La Carretera Austral se extiende por sobre 1240 km de salvajes tierras en el sur de Chile, conectando Puerto Montt con Villa O’Higgins. Uno pensaría que un proyecto que atraviesa la mitad de la Patagonia consideraría a sus vecinos, pero no, actualmente no existen cruces para la vida silvestre y lo peor es que las partes que aún no se construyen, pero que si están en tramitando su proyecto en el SEA tampoco contemplan construirlos.
En los últimos dos años hemos estado documentando junto a @estudiosdelmonte @librofauna y @valee.alarcon.a a los animales que habitan y transitan por el delineado de la futura carretera y los resultados han sido muy interesantes, hemos obtenido muy altas tasas de captura para pumas, güiñas y pudús, también hemos observado quiques y huillines. El Valle del Río Reñihué es uno de los pocos lugares que quedan en Chile dónde la fauna se puede desplazar libremente entre los Andes y el Océano sin toparse con ningún tipo de camino. - @emintehess on Instagram

This evidence of potential inbreeding depression, as opposed to just low genetic diversity, makes the case for building a proposed wildlife crossing even more urgent. Rats are often associated with disease, sewage and trash, but the viral story of a brave rodent in Cambodia has changed mindsets overnight. Born in Tanzania, Magawa is a 5-year-old African giant pouched rat who can detect deadly unexploded ordnance lying hidden in the jungles and open fields across Cambodia, the second most landmine-affected country after Afghanistan. From the unexploded bombs dropped during the Vietnam war, to the landmines laid by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and in decades of civil conflict that followed, Cambodia has more than 25,000 mine amputees, the largest per capita in the world. But in a span of four years, Magawa - which means courage - has located an impressive 39 active landmines and 28 unexploded munitions. He has helped clear more than 1.5 million square feet of land, the size of 20 football fields, saving tens of thousands from maiming and death in the process. And last week he became the first rat ever to receive a gold medal award for “life-saving bravery and devotion to duty” in the field. “For every landmine or unexploded remnant Magawa finds, he eradicates the risk of death or serious injury. Fantastic greater kudu we were lucky enough to relocate after catching a glimpse of him the day before. The next morning we got the wind right & started still hunting through the valley we saw him in. We had gone about 1.5 miles & we were maybe 100 yards from where we had seen him the day before & @dustin_van_staden_ spotted him! He was with another male & they knew something wasn’t right but we had the wind. As they slowly moved off we picked up their tracks & caught up to them again maybe 15 min later. Another video of Flanders’ fast-growing wolf pups has been released. New video footage of the wolf pups born in Flanders last spring has been released by the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (Inbo). The pups even discovered the hidden wildlife camera and nosed it a bit before moving on. Born in early May, the pups have grown immensely, though are still extremely playful. While four pups were caught on video footage in June, only three can be seen in the latest footage, recorded by hidden wildlife cameras. According to Inbo, the fourth pup has not been seen since July. The institute cannot say with certainty whether the pup is still alive. Many wolf pups, however, do die in the first few months of life. The litter of wolves was born to August and Noëlla, the only two adult wolves currently living in Flanders. It was the first time in 150 years that wolf pups were born in the region. While several other adult wolves have spent time in Flanders over the last few years – most recently a lone male called Billy – they have all moved to other territories. Billy was last seen this summer in Germany. The wolves are mostly at home in Limburg, sometimes crossing into Antwerp province. The wolves have been responsible for the death of livestock in the area, mostly sheep, but also three llamas, a kangaroo and a cow. This had led farmers to ask for help in protecting their livestock and to be given access to tracking devices so they know where the wolves are at any given time. - @flanderstoday on Instagram

El Pudú, Pudu puda, es uno de los cérvidos más pequeños del mundo. En Chile habita entre las regiones del Maule y de Aysén, en bosques densos con vegetación arbustiva en los que puede ocultarse. En estado adulto, alcanza hasta 90 cm de largo, 40 cm de altura y hasta 10 kg de peso. Su expectativa de vida es de 8 a 10 años. No hay datos precisos sobre su número poblacional. Tiene cuello, cola y extremidades cortas, y sus orejas son medianamente grandes y redondeadas. Su pelaje es áspero, denso y de color marrón – castaño. Los machos tienen una pequeña cornamenta no ramificada de hasta 10 cm y orientada hacia atrás, las hembras carecen de ella. Es herbívoro, tiene un olfato sensible y es muy tímido y asustadizo. Pasa gran parte del día acostado, protegido por los matorrales. Si logras verlo en el bosque, no te acerques, no lo alimentes y quédate quieto; ante cualquier amenaza el pudú arranca despavorido y podría sufrir un accidente. En estado adulto, un macho puede pesar hasta 100 kg y medir 80 cm de alto. Su largo, desde la nariz hasta la punta de la cola, es de alrededor de 2,4 metros y su cola mide más de un tercio del largo total del animal. Es un veloz corredor de distancias cortas y un hábil trepador. Tiene patas traseras grandes y fuertes que les permiten saltar a una altura de hasta 5,5 m verticales e impulsarse cerca de 12 m horizontales. Tiene garras poderosas que le permiten escalar laderas rocosas y moverse con gran habilidad incluso sobre la nieve. Su vida es solitaria y territorial y en Chile habita principalmente en los faldeos de la Cordillera de los Andes. Los pumas hembras se reproducen una vez cada dos o tres años y los cachorros dependen completamente de la madre durante los primeros seis meses. EMERGENCY APPEAL for 12 day old baby rhino. EVERY $ counts Special SARF Supporter Appeal This 12-day old rhino calf was found two days ago, stuck in the mud on Save Valley Conservancy. As you can see, he is exhausted from the stress of being separated from his mum; also we don’t know how long he was stuck in the mud before he was found. The security team have been searching for his mother for the last couple of days but a reunion hasn’t happened yet. We need your help, please, for emergency helicopter and vet expenses, as follows;1. Two hour helicopter flight from Harare, plus 2 vets. 2. Locate the mother, Ivory, and dart her from the air. 3. Take the baby to her and get it to suckle and put each other’s smells on each other. 4. Partially dehorn the mother so she doesn’t harm her calf. 5. Reverse the dart and hope the mother accepts her calf. 6. Fly back to Harare. This photo is from inside the buffer zone of a tiger reserve. SWIPE to see a close-up of the Chital stag so that you know that the wire has started damaging the throat region of this hapless deer. Wire and nylon snares are amongst the most commonly used weapons to trap and kill wild herbivores across India. Many animals are not as unlucky as this animal - they die at the very location where such snares are installed - they get strangulated as they try to desperately free themselves OR die of dehydration because of an unsuccessful but violent struggle OR the hunter clobbers the trapped animal to death with a blow on its head. This deer is very unlucky as it managed to break the snare. Now it would die a very slow and painful death either because flies will lay eggs in the injured neck region and maggots (larvae of flies) will start feeding on flesh, drilling holes in its neck muscle and the tracheal passage OR die of starvation as the wire will slowly but surely tighten around the neck, making it impossible to swallow. Unlike olden days, when guns were prevalent, hunters of today have started deploying this silent weapon to kill wild herbivores in unimaginable numbers. Patrolling in forests outside protected areas of India annually reveal thousands of snares deployed to kill deer, wild pig, antelope, hare, ground birds, monitor lizards and monkeys. In fact, in poorly protected national parks and sanctuaries, one can find them even inside park boundaries. Additionally, these giant killers, accidentally trap non-target species such as wolves, jackals, small cats, hyenas, leopards and tigers. When you were little did the facts about wild animals spark an interest in you? Some of you even started mini class projects in a science class to protect endangered species. We hope that spark is still there. Above is a picture of the critically endangered Mountain Bongo. Considered the most beautiful antelope, bongos are only found in Kenya in their natural habitat, and there are approximately 100 of them left in the wild. The population in the wild has dipped in the past 50 years primarily due to unrestricted hunting, poaching, loss of habitat, illegal logging in forests and diseases such as rinderpest which is thought to have drastically cut their numbers in the 1890s and early 1900s. It is now listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Fairmont Mount Kenya is situated within Mt Kenya wildlife conservancy the home to the critically endangered bongo. Our guests do take part in visiting their sanctuary whenever they get the chance for KSH 1,500 per person. Last month we GPS-collared two subadult cougars (C21 & C22) that weve been monitoring with their mother (C5) since last January. When we initially collared the mother our houndsman said she had 3 kittens but subsequent camera footage that we got only ever showed two at a time. Now 9 months later we can officially show that yes, indeed she has had 3 kittens all along because this family clearly takes turns at a kill and one very obviously is not collared! He seems like a healthy male, and now that these cats have left their mother to make their own kills we may only occasionally see him with his mother. . . . Day 33: There is a HOPE…and the hope is you! Her diet was inappropriate and confined in a small cage were impacted her natural behaviour, whether physically and psychologically. At the time of her rescue in August 2020, she weighed only 1.4kg – malnourished and stunted. Little Betung grows at a slow rate. Her health check result indicates pancytopenia and low in total protein. Today, Little Betung is 6 months old and weighs 2.00kg. A variety of fruits, vegetables and protein, a supplement makes up Betungs’ daily diet. She never skips meal time! During the outing in the forest, she gets the opportunity to dig dead wood, sunbathing, climbing small trees and exercise. It is likely her rehabilitation will be a much longer process. Time will be her healer. With appropriate nutrition, medical care and the amount of Love and Care help Betung in much improved physical and psychological health. Were you able to guess this lesser-known species? The Saker Falcon is a rapidly declining endangered species that is observed across a wide range from Eastern Europe to Western China. In India, the species can be observed in the open and grassy wintering grounds of the Northern states, as well as in Gujarat. The Saker Falcon is a large and distinctive bird of prey that hunts close to ground by horizontal pursuit, combining rapid acceleration and high maneuverability to feed on terrestrial rodents such as ground squirrels. The Saker Falcon is gravely endangered and at risk from multiple threats. The species’ rapid decline has been attributed to a wide loss of habitat from habitat destruction and habitat conversion.
