Hey y’all, read on. This is BIG news!! . Our biologists have captured a subadult mountain lion with reproductive and tail defects. This marks the first time we’re seeing abnormalities linked to inbreeding depression in mountain lions! 😳 . P-81’s kinked tail is shaped like the letter “L” and he has only one descended testicle. . “This is something we hoped to never see,” said wildlife biologist Jeff Sikich. “We knew that genetic diversity was low here, but this is the first time we have actually seen physical evidence of it. This grave discovery underscores the need for measures to better support this population.” . Scientists have been studying the mountain lion population for 18 years in the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding region. . This evidence of potential inbreeding depression, as opposed to just low genetic diversity, makes the case for building a proposed wildlife crossing even more urgent. The bridge will connect populations of wildlife south of the 101 Freeway to those in other natural areas to the north in the Simi Hills, the Santa Susana Mountains, and ultimately in Los Padres National Forest. . We decided to gamble on a sure thing and headed past the bison carcass with coyotes in search of wolves. The entire Junction Butte pack was lazing around at the rendezvous site except one youngster who was on a mission. @howellnaturephotography spotted this one heading out of the sage and toward the river. We played leapfrog a few times but it was clearly on a mission walking along the far bank so we jumped way ahead and waited for it to come down through this shady gap and when it came out into the light... Juliana is introducing the concept of feral though, in a beautiful contrast to Levi Strauss pensée sauvage, or the domesticated mind of capitalism. Follow 52 propossals to see the history develop! Here the first post: LA PENSÉE FÉRALE 1/7 “What do a dog and a tree have in common? Their bark!” Joke, anonymous. “An animal is classified as feral when it is a former domestic animal living in a wild habitat, without food or shelter provided by humans, and showing some resistance to people”, biologists state. Some of the most common species that turn feral are cats, dogs, horses, and pigs. Once companion species, when the pact established thousands of years ago by codomestication is broken, they have the ability not to go back to being wolves, their wild ancestors in the case of dogs, but to become something else. They become feral. Claude Lévi-Strauss coined the concept of pensée sauvage (not la pensée des sauvages, as we are often reminded), a type of “untamed” thought, kept alive in the modern western world within “natural reserves” of art, as he would say. Dogs are not often considered wildlife; they are mostly a species-with-humans. Messmates. That does not mean they could not experience their own kind of pensée sauvage – or even a domesticated thought, who knows. But what mode of thought is expressed when these two worlds collapse, pacts are broken, their world is wounded, they become without-humans and thus feral? Several Tiger Reserves in Central India have opened for tourists today - October 1st, 2020, after a long break. Tourist and people involved in the tourism industry will have to behave responsibly to not negatively impact either the forest staff or large cats. Social distancing in the best possible way; maintaining personal hygiene; no spitting in the forest, no gargling inside the forest; no sharing eatables and water with the forest staff (they have been relatively safe from COVID-19 until now, dont ruin it for them) are some of the many personal etiquettes that people will have to follow to minimise the spread of the virus among forest communities (both humans and wildlife). The health of the frontline forest staff is extremely important for the protection of our tiger reserves. Tourists should be mindful of that. Tip the guides, drivers and hospitality staff liberally. Their livelihood has been massively affected by the pandemic. Your generosity will reduce their financial stress significantly. Also, remember that some captive tigers in Bronx Zoo were infected by COVID-19. Strictly avoid spitting or gargling inside the forest as although the chance of transfer of the virus via this mode is low, it isnt nil. Above all, enjoy Indias forest and wildlife. You definitely deserve quality time with mother nature, especially after a frustratingly-long phase of house arrest. SMELL . The tigers sense of smell is not as acute as some of its other senses and is generally not used for hunting. They have small amounts of odor-detecting cells in their nose and a reduced olfactory region in the brain that identifies various scents. . The tiger mainly uses its sense of smell for communicating information with one another such as territories and reproductive status. . Tigers, like other carnivores, have a Jacobson organ in the roof of their mouth. The Jacobson organ is a pouch-like structure located directly behind the front incisors. It has two small openings that direct scent particles from the air as the tiger inhales to nerves located within the structure. The nerves then transmit the message to the olfactory region in the brain that identifies the scent. . Tigers will exhibit a behavior called flehman, in which they pick up a scent on their upper lip and curl it upwards towards their nose to detect scents. Ah, the elusive and fantastic pine marten! Martens may avoid open ground to reduce the risk of predation. Pine martens aren’t confined to woodland, but each animal requires from 86 to 166 hectares of woodland within its territory. Once found across Britain, the pine marten was prone to persecution until relatively recently. Though it has recovered a little from a dramatic decline, the species is still rare. Scotland’s population is estimated at 3,700 adult pine martens. The species was given full legal protection in 1988. Pine martens are once again established across much of Scotland north of the central belt, with outlying populations in parts of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. Of all of the southern African mammals, the Aardvark has always been the most elusive to me with only fleeting glimpses of the rear end of an aardvark being had as it scurries away in to the darkness and out of sight. Once a farmer brought one to me in a trap that had been set to catch caracal and after having a good look at the poor animal, I released it onto a protected area, but this somehow still does not count to me as a decent sighting. One afternoon here @mountcamdeboo, where my family and I are spending the lockdown period, an odd shape ambled up to the fence that is around the house and had a long sniff at my very confused ridgeback. Excitedly we realized it was an aardvark in broad daylight. Barely daring to breathe for fearing of scaring the animal away, we slowly snuck forward to get a clearer view. It soon became evident however that this particular aardvark was extremely relaxed and has subsequently returned on most afternoons. Excitingly, it has allowed me to follow it (we think it is a female) while she goes about checking warthog burrows and searches for ants which she digs out, blasting air into their tunnels before licking them up with vigor. So far her wanderings easily take her over a kilometer from where I originally find her and this give a fascinating insight to her life. I am always very acutely aware to her sensitivities and leave her immediately if I sense that I am disturbing her in any way. Long may she continue with her visits! - @peterianchadwick on Instagram

When most of us think of Tadoba, the very first image that would flash across our minds would indisputably and undoubtedly be that of a Tiger! But for me it has always been the Indian Gaur! The number of them I have seen in Tadoba, I have seen nowhere else in my jungle escapades till date. My very first safari in Tadoba started with sermons from the driver to all aboard the jeep, which translated to Please turn off any flash immediately, we do not want to be on the receiving end of the compounded rage of 15 Indian Bisons; kindly freeze and mute yourselves. Despite these peace inducing measures, the alpha decided that we were annoying pests on wheels and coaxed the herd to quietly and quickly cross the road and move to a very undisturbed forest interior. Sigh! Happy world lemur day! Last week I spent some time exploring Analamazaotra NP and celebrated #worldlemurday early, up close with the worlds largest lemur - the magnificent Indri (Indri Indri). Today it’s all too easy to get caught up in the grim statistics that surround Madagascar’s environmental problems and lemur declines, so sometimes it’s important to just appreciate these beautiful animals. This male (Rambo - which means ‘tail’ in Malagasy) was perfectly at ease as he delicately nibbled some new leaves just a foot away from me. Rambo is a study animal and now well habituated to the local guides who track and study his family group each day. These folivorous lemurs can live up to 20 years old in the wild (there are none in captivity - their diet is too complex to properly replicate). I always get asked: whats your favourite animal? and people are always very disappointed to find that I dont have one. Theyre probably even more disappointed to have to listen to me indecisively ramble on about all the different kinds of animals that I love and why I couldnt possibly pick a favourite. So, when @newbig5project asked me to pick my 5 favourite mammals, you can imagine it was a bit of a dilemma 😂 but I was really happy to support @newbig5project ! This project is creating a New Big 5, celebrating wildlife through photography; 5 new species to aim our cameras at, not our weapons. I absolutely adore gibbons so they made it onto my big 5! I was a bad biologist and didnt specify a species....because I couldnt choose... (peak indecisiveness). The one pictured is a Grey Gibbon, found only on the island of Borneo 😍 Gibbons have the most wonderful territorial call that gets increasingly faster and louder as the call reaches a climax; its ridiculously fun to listen to. It has been my daily alarm for the past 4 years since I first saw wild gibbons in Sumatra (Lar Gibbons). Equally special is the agility and speed with which they move through the thick jungle canopy; it is utterly astonishing. They do this through riccochetal brachiation: they swing from tree limb to tree limb using their arms (they have no tails), launching themselves at ridiculous speeds through the air. This is probably the closest to flying any primate can get! It was soo difficult trying to capture this behaviour- gibbons are literally hurling themselves between branches using rotational kinetic energy (nerd alert); theyve been known to swing across 15m gaps as fast as 55km/h! We are in the calm before the kiwi storm, kiwi across the country are beginning to sit on their eggs doing their best to stay safe from introduced pests and predators. Soon those eggs will be collected from the wild then where they will be incubated, hatched and raised before being released to new pest and predator free homes (like @sanctuary_mountain with this kiwi now lives). La Pampa extensa nos abrazaba con sus colores ocres y una racha gélida arreciaba. Para ser sincero batallabamos contra el frío reinante. Nuestra motivación era sencilla y noble, sólo pretendíamos maravillarnos con la biodiversidad patagonica. Hasta ese momento nuestras expectativas eran altas. Al arribar, el paisaje era agreste, nos detuvimos solo por intuición en un grupo de rocas, de pronto bajo una de ellas, 2 luceros me miraron fijamente con inherente desdén. Él sabía que desde aquel feudo era infranqueable. Mas seguridad le daba su pestilente arma, que no dudaría en utilizar si se viese amenazado. De pronto con grácil caminar arrancó, no podía dar crédito de la elegancia con la cual recorría su derrotero, ese momento quedó imperecedero en mi, pensé que ahí terminaba nuestro encuentro, cuando de manera sorpresiva se detuvo, volteo su cabeza, alzó su nariz y se despidió. Yo feliz, que otro sentimiento puede inundar el corazón? The Highway The Carretera Austral spans over 1240 km of Chiles wildest country between Puerto Montt and Villa OHiggins. You would think that a project that crosses half of Patagonia should have been built considering their neighbors, but no, there are zero wildlife crossings. Some parts of this road are yet to be built, and again, the project doesnt contemplate any wildlife crossings. I have been documenting the wildlife occurring in the outline of the upcoming road project in the valley of the Reñihué river, one of the few places left in Chile where animals can freely roam between the Andes and the Ocean without ever having to cross a road. The results are compelling. Güiñas, pudus, pumas and many other animals live in this area. A project this big and so poorly planned will threaten their very existence. This photo depicts a puma using the very trail where the highway is supposed to be build, as indicated by the sign installed by Chiles Ministerio de Obras Públicas. The message is clear enough, we are building over occupied territory. Shot for Reñihué Nature Conservnacy Foundation. La Carretera La Carretera Austral se extiende por sobre 1240 km de salvajes tierras en el sur de Chile, conectando Puerto Montt con Villa O’Higgins. Uno pensaría que un proyecto que atraviesa la mitad de la Patagonia consideraría a sus vecinos, pero no, actualmente no existen cruces para la vida silvestre y lo peor es que las partes que aún no se construyen, pero que si están en tramitando su proyecto en el SEA tampoco contemplan construirlos. En los últimos dos años hemos estado documentando junto a @estudiosdelmonte @librofauna y @valee.alarcon.a a los animales que habitan y transitan por el delineado de la futura carretera y los resultados han sido muy interesantes, hemos obtenido muy altas tasas de captura para pumas, güiñas y pudús, también hemos observado quiques y huillines. Wednesday the 30th of September (day 188 of lockdown) On this morning our herd of 10 slowly made it over the hill towards the valley side of the park. On the way there, Shungu came across a lone, big branch and he happily started munching away. It had clearly been left there, by some elephant the day before. It wasnt long though, before Thandi discovered Shungu and his branch and she quickly decided it had to be hers. She stormed towards Shungu, giving him quite the fright, but he was determined to not give up on his branch. Shungu got a good hold of it with his trunk, raised his head up high and took off... But Thandi has much longer legs than Shungu and she had soon enough caught up with him. He tossed the branch aside and ran off into the valley, leaving Thandi behind with the popular lone branch. Thandi proudly started munching away and made sure to not share with her mum Nandi, when she came over to check what all the commotion was about. Most of the morning was spend on the hillside of the valley. Later in the afternoon Mashudu kept himself busy chasing the zebras. The first photo is Keisha, with Shungu in the back ground. This photo is from inside the buffer zone of a tiger reserve. SWIPE to see a close-up of the Chital stag so that you know that the wire has started damaging the throat region of this hapless deer. Wire and nylon snares are amongst the most commonly used weapons to trap and kill wild herbivores across India. Many animals are not as unlucky as this animal - they die at the very location where such snares are installed - they get strangulated as they try to desperately free themselves OR die of dehydration because of an unsuccessful but violent struggle OR the hunter clobbers the trapped animal to death with a blow on its head. This deer is very unlucky as it managed to break the snare. Now it would die a very slow and painful death either because flies will lay eggs in the injured neck region and maggots (larvae of flies) will start feeding on flesh, drilling holes in its neck muscle and the tracheal passage OR die of starvation as the wire will slowly but surely tighten around the neck, making it impossible to swallow. Unlike olden days, when guns were prevalent, hunters of today have started deploying this silent weapon to kill wild herbivores in unimaginable numbers. Patrolling in forests outside protected areas of India annually reveal thousands of snares deployed to kill deer, wild pig, antelope, hare, ground birds, monitor lizards and monkeys. In fact, in poorly protected national parks and sanctuaries, one can find them even inside park boundaries. Additionally, these giant killers, accidentally trap non-target species such as wolves, jackals, small cats, hyenas, leopards and tigers. Day 33: There is a HOPE…and the hope is you! Her diet was inappropriate and confined in a small cage were impacted her natural behaviour, whether physically and psychologically. At the time of her rescue in August 2020, she weighed only 1.4kg – malnourished and stunted. Little Betung grows at a slow rate. Her health check result indicates pancytopenia and low in total protein. Today, Little Betung is 6 months old and weighs 2.00kg. A variety of fruits, vegetables and protein, a supplement makes up Betungs’ daily diet. She never skips meal time! During the outing in the forest, she gets the opportunity to dig dead wood, sunbathing, climbing small trees and exercise. It is likely her rehabilitation will be a much longer process. Time will be her healer. With appropriate nutrition, medical care and the amount of Love and Care help Betung in much improved physical and psychological health.
