Much of the land in the first 2 miles of the run is private or tribal land with a lot of important cultural resources and sacred sites. Several local land owners have expressed concerns over boaters hanging out on private property as well as some garbage concerns with additional use from scheduled releases. Please help us show the locals how amazing the boating community is. Please avoid these lands to help conserve the cultural resources and if you see some trash please grab it. Update SF Salmon (ID) = Easy-action form coming soon 📨 We’ve been waiting for the release of the draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Stibnite Gold Project, a project that jeopardizes the outstanding water quality of many miles of classic whitewater in the South Fork of the Salmon and Salmon River drainages. We’re analyzing the DEIS right now, but we’ve already noted that the Forest Service identified significant issues concerning surface water and groundwater – stating the obvious, that construction and operation of mine infrastructure may impact water quality and quantity. The DEIS itself spells out that the project, as proposed, will adversely affect Endangered Species Act listed Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, and Bull Trout and their critical habitat. Not only would these impacts from Midas Gold Corporations large-scale open pit gold mine put pressure on endangered fish; they threaten the world class paddling experience found by descending these wild and scenic rivers known across the world for their pristine mountain waters. The release of the DEIS in August kicked off a 60 day public comment period, open until October 13. We’re working with our local partners including @idahoriversunited and @savethesouthfork to submit comments and to raise public awareness about this threat to one of the most iconic and unspoiled regions of the Payette National Forest. Stay tuned! Based in the centre of the North Island in the small town of Tūrangi (meaning to stand in the Sky, alluding to the three mountains in the Tongariro National Park) they take their guests on a picturesque and wild ride aboard the pristine waters of the Tongariro River. Owner operator Pianika Boddington says that “there have been so many great memories over the years. Some of the best are when we take physically disabled or people with medical conditions rafting. The river can have a magical effect on people”. Admittedly the hardest part about the current situation is “not knowing when we are going to open and if we will need to close again”. Pianika says that they miss “meeting the diverse range of people” that choose to take up the challenge of rafting on the Tongariro. We want to thank the crew at Rafting New Zealand for showing nothing but aroha (love) each time we visit with our groups. They are the epitome of manaakitanga and we wish them all the best.
