Despite increased protections, #pangolin scale seizures are at an all time high amidst the #COVID19 pandemic. A new report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, provides new data and details that show the trade in African pangolins to Asia for traditional medicine continues to grow. Last year, not only were more pangolin scales seized globally than in any other year for which data is available, but it also saw the biggest individual seizures of pangolin scales on record. Within a single week in April, Singapore intercepted a 14.2-ton shipment and a 14-ton shipment, estimated to be from more than 70,000 pangolins. Chris Hamley, senior pangolin campaigner for @EIAEnvironment, says illegal trade may have increased because as smugglers have shifted from Asian pangolins to African ones, there was an existing supply chain they could co-opt. “In Africa, there was already the bushmeat trade chains that have pangolins, and so it was almost like a natural byproduct,” Hamley says. Today we’re going to clarify the legality of marlin’s fishing and commercialization. Many people in Mexico, specially in the states of the northwest Pacific, buy and eat marlin. But, is it legal? . There is a law to regulate this, the NOM-017-PESC-1994 clearly establishes that fishing for marlins and other billfishes is exclusively reserved for sport fishing, within 50-mile off the coast line. However, for a long time commercial fishing vessels have been illegaly capturing and selling marlin and dorado, and the meat is being sold not only in Mexico but also it is exporting to the USA. . So when you buy a “marlin” burrito at a restaurant there’s 3 options: 1- It was fished by commercial fisherman: illegal 2- It was fished by sport-fisherman and then sold: illegal 3- It is not marlin, you might be eating shark or other fish species (food fraud): illegal 4- It was incidentally fished by shark fisherman and then sold: unlikely but could happen; legal gap/loophole. . It is important that us, the consumers, are aware of the species we’re eating and the legality of it.
