Cinematography department behind the scenes of the @cleanbandit + @mabel video (dir. @jack_fdt @lukepatterson). DP @edgardubrovskiy Focus puller @alibainesfilm Gaffer @dompalgan Grip Danny Laviada Had a week of prep. Having certain constraints (height of the set vs the available studios, the background behind the set needing to be dark, certain grip gear not avail), I’ve decided to 3D pre-viz some of the key setups using CineDesigner. Max Strauch production designer modelled the set and I put it inside the studio using correct measurements. This gave us options to play around with angles, see how long the track and jib we need (as well as the correct size of the carpet:)) The main overhead boxes were 20x12 (one full one half grid - went for thicker diffusion for the talent-facing). There were 7x Sky Panel S60 in each (went for the SPs, as needed a colour temperature change in shot). Then the same two boxes were used to light the “rooms” setups (@gracechatto playing cello and in popcorn bath, Luke in drum room and Jack on keyboards). @dompalgan came up with the neat idea to use same boxes, as @twickenhamstudios has railing system, we swung both boxes in real quick. The “room” setups had additional lamps like SP60s to backlight and 5K to throw a shape on the wall plus some @asteraofficial uplighting the cello setup’s background. +a lovely 1K jemball. Danny Noinstagram Laviada the grip went with Fisher 10 dolly + fisher 23 job arm and a mini scorpio EZ head. Shot on @arri Alexa Mini with @leica_camera Summilux lenses. Answering questions: Time to shoot this? And what time the day starts? We had 8h pre-light day and then 16h day to shoot and 4h next morning to PU a couple shots. Call times were 7:15am. Use the same rental for everything? Camera and grip came from @panavisionofficial (again, thanks @george_rumsey) and lighting was supplied by @prolightlondon. Who keeps track of equipment and makes sure nothing is lost? Nobody. Jokes. Its a mix of focus puller + 2nd ac for camera, grip for grip and gaffer for the lights. Its a team-work, while I try not to lose my jacket and the bag on every location. How many coffes to you average on a 16h music video? 4. - @edgardubrovskiy on Instagram

It’s been awhile since I’ve allowed myself to set time aside to make art without feeling guilty about it. 📽Experimenting with film for the first time with some super novice iPhone clips from a recent drive across the country to be with a loved one during an impending death. The footage is an amalgamation of six days spent staring mindlessly out of the car window as we raced across the country towards an imminent fate, and back. The foreboding pressure of time was absorbed in aimless thoughts and varied time zones, while space was defined by the varied topographical landscapes. This was such a tricky scene. June pulls a gun on a small child who is about to undermine her plan to save hundreds of children. A moral dilemma . We started shooting quite tricksy, but we kept over stating the point, distancing ourselves from the actor. With the direction of the guys of @aggressivetv, we designed a real-time basement environment to be synchronized with virtual and physical cameras to create an immersive and fully interactive set to shoot. With this Virtual Production technique they were able to reduce the number of crew required to be present on set. But the main point is that we could eliminate the need for a green screen to integrate an actor into a CG environment, saving also a lot of post production time like tracking and keying. The LED tiles work also to light the Actor, so the sense of integration and reflections feels more natural and specially blended through the lens of the camera. The virtual set created in @notchvfx enabled custom depth-of- field and dynamic lighting effects driven by the LED tiles, real-time video guests appearances, as well as a slew of in-show animations and easter eggs that we were able to trigger on cue. With all the visuals being rendered in real-time, last minute adjustments to art direction, virtual «propping and set dressing», and lighting, could be done smoothly and efficiently on the day. Very rarely do you get an opportunity to work on something with a group of friends that just falls into place so effortlessly. @thenbhd video for Pretty Boy feels like the culmination of conversations that @chipchrome and I had been kicking back and fourth for awhile. How enlightenment values led to mass surveillance. Editorial for Berggruen Magazine. - The irony is that Western capitalism is animated by an individualist ethic. It is no longer the superior productivity of capitalism in the West that is touted as its chief virtue. In many areas where China is forging ahead — machine learning and biotechnology, for example — such superiority can no longer be taken for granted. Instead, the advantage of Western capitalism is held to be its promotion of personal freedom. The dissolution of communities by turbocharged markets is not, in this view, a social cost but a positive gain. Liberated from attachment to any particular place, human beings in a post-industrial economy can become the autonomous individuals celebrated in liberal theory. Of course, things have not quite worked out this way. As the late nineteenth century French sociologist Émile Durkheim perceived, the flipside of free-floating autonomy is anomie — a society without any authoritative norms. Pried from closed communities, many people suffer from pathologies of isolation and purposelessness. Family breakdown, drug addiction and mental illness become widespread and increasingly normal. In these conditions of social disorder, surveillance technologies are surrogates for the communities Western capitalism has destroyed. Ubiquitous video cameras replace the prying eyes of neighbors.
