Our roof is literally falling off: Codfish Hollow is raising money for a new roof Amanda Hancock ahancock@qctimes.com https://qctimes.com/entertainment/music/our-roof-is-literally-falling-off-codfish-hollow-is-raising/article_91adbbef-f030-589b-91f6-e31db0b0953a.html Plenty of people who have attended shows at Codfish Hollow, the popular barn-turned-music-venue in Maquoketa may have seen shingles, or parts of them, lying on the floor. “Thats right,” said Tiffany Biehl, who owns the barn with her husband, Shawn. “Our roof is literally falling off. That’s why the couple has started a fundraiser — with a total goal of $30,000 — to raise money to build a new roof. They have raised $5,000 over the last four years. In December, they launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe titled, “Raise the Roof. Of the $25,000 goal listed on the fundraising page, $2,680 has been raised so far. Codfish Hollow started hosting concerts in 2009 and has since hosted musical acts such as Norah Jones, Nathaniel Rateliff and Counting Crows as well as several multi-day festivals. Biehl said she started the fundraiser because fixing the roof is “not going to be cheap.” And proceeds from shows at the barn would not cover the cost. “There may be a bit of a misconception out there among some people, but we dont really make much money doing this,” she said. “Most, if not all, of the money generated through ticket sales goes to compensating the artists.” During the first five years of the business, the shows didn’t make money at all. Over the years, Biehl said many people have donated building materials, bar equipment and other items used around the barn and at shows. For her and her husband and the many volunteers who help make Codfish Hollow run, Biehl said, “It’s mostly just a labor of love.” - @iowamusicshowcase on Instagram

This steel-reinforced concrete structure was Hitler’s home for over 800 days of the war and was where he made decisions such as the construction of death camps. Here is a new story Ive written about a railroad crossing at Water Street in Fairport. It has been out of commission for over sixty years, for good reason. Treacherous Railroad Crossing Closed in 1959 By Bill Poray, Perinton Town Historian Accidents at Fairport railroad crossings were far more common in the days prior to automatic signals and gates, activated when a train approaches the crossing. Over sixty years ago, a dangerous railroad crossing was eliminated in Fairport. Since the 1880s, the crossing allowed pedestrians, horse-drawn wagons and carriages, and later, cars and trucks, to pass over the railroad tracks at Water Street. The crossing, just north of Donnelley’s Public House, the old Green Tavern, was removed in August of 1959, and for a good reason. It was a menace to safety. At the time, there was much debate regarding the benefits of replacing railroad employees functioning as crossing guards with automatic gates. A 1957 traffic study recorded 86 trains - 47 passenger and 39 freight trains, passed through the village of Fairport in a 24-hour period. According to testimony at a hearing before the Public Service Commission in Albany in 1957, the maximum speed of trains passing through Fairport was recorded at “50 miles per hour for freight, and 80 miles per hour for main line passenger trains.” In the case of the Water Street crossing, 750 feet east of North Main Street, pedestrians and vehicle traffic were on their own. There was no crossing guard or gates of any kind. On a snowy day in February of 1941, a fast-moving eastbound train originating from Chicago approached the village of Fairport. Just seconds after crossing Main Street, it slammed into an automobile operated by Adrian Zonneville, traveling south on Water Street, killing the driver. A page-one report of the accident in the Fairport Herald-Mail stated, “This crossing is guarded in no way, either by a watchman, flasher, or gates.” The crossing at Water Street included five sets of tracks, and a siding, meaning vehicles and pedestrians were required to travel a distance of 80 feet or more to cross all the tracks.
