This is an artist’s rendition of a bird’s-eye view of Sturgeon Bay in 1880. In just 30 years, the village had been transformed from a pine forest to the bustling county seat of Door County with its abundance of sawmills. The business district was already established on Cedar Street (Third Avenue), and the courthouse stood on the outskirts of the community. Stone quarries, lime kilns, and ice operations all fed into the burgeoning city’s economy. Rising sea levels threaten our community and coastal way of life at the same time. I have been working with our Planning staff, colleagues from around the state, and the Coastal Commission on a set of innovative strategies to address the threat. Our Board adopted a new Local Coastal Plan that includes a set of policies that recognize our coastal geology, take into account our voter-approved land-use policies, and prepare our county to deal with the impacts of sea-level rise. This approach promotes good use of science, creates flexibility in our response, and sets a time horizon of 20 years so we can reconfigure the policies based on the latest science. - @superleopold on Instagram

Happy Aloha Monday! In 1899, the Oahu Railway and Land Company constructed a railway that encompassed 70 miles from Honolulu through Kahuku to transport sugarcane. Most of the tracks were destroyed due to a tsunami in 1946. Today, parts of the railroad tracks are still visible along the Kaena point trail. - @myersfilm on Instagram

We visit Port Isaac daily on our trips, did you know it’s actually called Porthysek in Cornish. The meaning of the Cornish name is corn port, indicating a trade in corn from the arable inland district. The origins of Port Isaac are likely Celtic and the development of the town can be roughly dvided into three phases. Through the middle ages and up to the coming of the railways Port Isaac was a thriving port serving the area inland. During the Tudor period the harbour was dredged, a good illustration of its importance. Once goods from locations further inland were better served by the North Cornwall Railway, the economy of the port relied on pilchard fishing, an activity that had likely been happening for centuries. However the pilchard shoals began to decline, and following World War 1 tourism became the mainstay of the economy.
