Maybe its the constant quest to find purpose that drives our minds at times to that bus in the middle of wilderness. But few consider it as anything more than a daydream, and fewer that take the powerful irrational leap of abandoning society and civilization. Sean Penns Chris McCandles is not just a figment of imagination, but one of the many disillusioned young men that discard existence. McCandles makes his way to the wilderness of Alaska, to survive in the solitude of the wild, untamed and untouched by man. Chriss story is recounted through flashbacks, encounters on the road and the lessons he learns on the way to the Alaskan wilderness. Chriss story is both heroic and cautionary, both foolish and brave. While the journey is beautiful and just as important and joyful as reaching the destination, the end was fatal for Chris. It is not until the very end that he realises that all that joy of the journey was not real without company. What he was running from was exactly what he had been looking for. And the truth that happiness is meaningless until you have someone to share it with. Kamal Hassan with his versatility could play the self-important and selfish but complex McCandles to perfection. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to spend some time at Lucy Sparrows (@sewyoursoul ) place while she was preparing her new installation/deli/pop-up show at @rockefellercenter in New York which opens today, October 1st at 11:am. I got to see her and her assistants sew tons of tiny schrimps, and baguettes, and slices of swiss cheese with holes, and opera cakes, all made of felt. Her house was filled with bags of handstitched potatoes, carrots, asparagus, sweetcorn, with happy faces ready to be sent to New York to be displayed alongside 30,000 other products. We talked a lot about her journey as a felt artist.The interview is in the new issue (#46) of @graffitiartmagazine with my pics that we had so much fun making. Our location manager found an empty store with great bones. Lighting revamp, ceiling and floor refresh. Shelving and custom built counters added. Every item in the store received custom designed packaging by our team of graphic designers, put together by our set dec crew. Farm to table supply chain, whole animal ideology. We even added a seafood section. Magical Thinking, 1998, oil on linen, 42 x 87 in Eliot on the school bus looking through the window. Back then, I’d pack his lunch with carrots and fruit roll-ups and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a brown paper bag with a new drawing for him everyday.. a zany portrait of him.. or an elaborate old smiley faced man. I’d stand below the window and watch him.. getting settled on the bus, finding his seat and going off to school.. there was just something melancholy about the way that he would leave every morning.. our separation through the glass, him passing with the reflections of the neighborhood houses and trees.. the other kids on the bus being irreverent and doing all the things that school kids do. We did this for years. Those days.. so mundane when they were happening.. are irretrievable. Appreciate every moment! Quarantine room, Leagnul di Copii, Tigru Mures, Romania (first image), on exhibition now at the @dallasmuseumart This series of isolated, glassed-in rooms serve as a quarantine for all babies entering an orphanage in Târgu Mureș, Romania. The space was painted by volunteers, a tender gesture meant to soften the cold institutional architecture of practicality with a palette of pastels. Cloudy sunlight filtered in through the windows, the indirect light coloring the space like a jewel. Healthy new arrivals only live in the small glass rooms for a couple of weeks before transitioning to a communal living space. But others never leave, confined to beds by abnormalities that would have been swiftly treated upon birth in the U.S. The place, due its function as an institution, feels cold and clinical. But even with the heaviest of subject matter, there are moments of lightness, places where the eyes can linger more easily, away from the heft the comes from thinking about children no one wants. - @mistykeas on Instagram
