For most people in addiction, putting the bottle down is not just about putting the bottle down. When we make statements like “they have to want to get help” you are assuming you KNOW what the person needs and the truth is you don’t! Not everyone will recovers through the Blue Book and coffee and not everyone falls into addiction for the same reasons. Regardless if it’s your brother, best friend, etc. stop assuming you know what one needs to overcome their addiction. Addicts put on masks all of the time and you may not be seeing the full picture. I’m not saying that you should coddle your loved ones... I am saying you shouldn’t assume. Instead of saying “this person doesn’t truly want help” or “you can’t help someone who doesn’t want help”, try “I can’t personally help this person with the tools that I have”. Have compassion for one another and if that is too big of a task for you mind your business. - @soberblackgirlsclub on Instagram

County of Ventura meeting State reopening metrics Today, the State of California announced that the County of Ventura has met the State COVID-19 metrics for one week. If the County meets the metrics for an additional week the State will allow the County to move into the Red Tier of the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. “I am excited Ventura County has been cleared to go to this next phase,” said Supervisor Kelly Long, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “Ventura County has consistently exceeded the standards in five of the six initial metrics set by the state. Clearing this last hurdle is a testament to the public’s patience and adherence to safety protocols. I look forward to more latitude and flexibility for our local businesses and social activities that will help our local economy and improve our quality of life.” As of September 29, the County has met the threshold for the case rate for the Red Tier. Any county within this tier must indicate a daily case rate of between 4-7 cases and a positivity rate of between 5-8%. Ventura County currently has a daily case rate of 7.0. The County’s testing volume of 283 exceeds the State average of 248.9. This has allowed for an adjustment by the State of the case rate from 8 to 7. Exceeding the requirements for testing has helped the County advance. “This is a huge step forward for our County,” said Mike Powers, County Executive Officer. “This advancement shows the commitment of our business community and community members to bring the numbers down. We understand the hardship faced by so many and appreciate that this next tier will offer the reopening of many areas. The economic toll of this virus continues to adversely impact the business community. We will continue to work for further progress.” The County anticipates that establishment in the Red Tier would become effective starting Tuesday, October 6, 2020. SELF SABOTAGE There are plenty of reasons we could be self sabotaging that have nothing to do with the fear of failure. Becoming aware of them requires us to do the hard work of self confronting. Unconsciously, our core beliefs and values can be at odds or in conflict with our goals. Immortalising this one from my story the other day. I have the pleasure of collaborating with a number of allied health professionals who manage my clients. Whilst I know enough about movement and anatomy to identify likely culprits when something hurts, and have a rudimentary understanding of pain, that’s about as far as it goes. When athletes experience injury or persistent pain that isn’t quickly resolved with load/movement modification, I’m pretty quick to refer out. Plenty of PTs overstep their bounds in attempting to manage injury (and likewise with medical and dietary advice). I can see where the impulse arises - a desire to appear knowledgeable, avoid mixed messaging and prove your worth all contribute to this “client-guarding” behaviour. I’ve actually found huge benefit to working with others. Rehab professionals can advise me as to how to best go about achieving my prerogative, performance improvements, whilst meeting the athlete’s specific needs. They can give me an idea of muscles/movements to strengthen and comment on my programming and the athlete’s tendencies, and the fresh perspective teaches me a lot. I also think that there’s some psychological benefit for the athlete in having separate coach/physio roles. The opportunity to communicate to the two, state their goals in both rehab and performance, and therefore have separate benchmarks for success can be powerful. Don’t be afraid to refer to those with expertise in managing your clients’ specific problems. Your job as a coach is to facilitate your athletes’ success, and sometimes that means letting other people help.
