This cat would come up to me every time I would eat at a regular spot of mine. She was always friendly but also very skinny. One day I noticed she had a cut on her leg, the next time I saw her it has swollen up to 4x its size and was oozing pus 😷 it was definite she wouldnt survive on the street, so we captured her and took her to the vet. 19 years ago today, the world changed. I was 11 and I couldnt understand how someone could harbor so much hate for an entire nation and culture on the other side of the planet. Over these long years of war, one fueled by blood and treasure, my perspective has changed. I see more clearly the gaping maw of endless war and the profiteers that line their pockets as young men and women die on foreign soil, hunting for American ideals of freedom, courage, patriotism, and honor. “The war on terror” could our objectives be any more vague? Are we winning? Is there less terror in the world? What freedoms have we collectively sacrificed in the name of security? Will we ever get to travel with our shoes on again?? Those that have served in these last 2 decades will hold a special place in history. We are the bulwark separating two distinct eras - pre and post 9/11. We are the vanguard that preserves the memory of life before war, and the horrors of war itself. We are like the ww2 generation; Living relics of stories in the history books. Children will learn of this war from the pages of a text book. They will learn of dates, places, and generals that speak in staccato sentences, about troop movements, and casualties, but they will eventually forget the personal significance of such events. In the same way the Peloponnesian war has dissolved into an amalgam of facts and figures, The War on Terror will also become history written by the winners, crooks, and academics. The other day a drunken man sat in my cab and started hurling abuses at me. I bore it and safely dropped him home at 4am, but I was very upset because as it is my job is so under appreciated. I was so cynical, I actually considered leaving and going back to Chandigarh. Just then, another customer got in and asked me to take him to the airport. Even though it was early in the morning, he asked me my name, where I came from and where I stay in Bombay. Half way through the journey he opened a box of sandwiches and offered me one and when he got out, he smiled and gave me 50 Rupees extra because 2 or 3 cab drivers before me had refused to take him. Had the great opportunity to reconnect with one of my favorite actors and all around great guy Mr. Ethan Hawke. He and I had worked together before on a Rolling Stone Cover. I love when I work with people who are collaborative, engaged and nurturing to the creative process. He stars in the upcoming THE GOOD LORD BIRD on Showtime which is going to be a must see. I arrived at his home in Connecticut during the Pandemic with one assistant and an SUV full of gear. We ended up shooting the entire session with one light. It was the most fun I have had on a shoot in ages. He and his wife Ryan Hawke welcomed us into their world for the afternoon... Now I am happy to share the results with you. The TM is the guy that’s cycling 800mg and not putting in the work, with high blood pressure and a temper to match. To be fit, to be elite requires discipline, work ethic, and that’s not a trait I’ve found in TMs operating in a world of Alphas that were humble killers. - What I have seen, even recently with a local loser that owns a “Tactical Company”, is this idea that-the louder you are the more badass you are. Typically the loudest are the ones that have done the least, constantly insecure in themselves and over compensating. It’s rare to see this in a tribe of real Alphas, real men. TM live a persona of being a “badass”, but more often have never truly been a badass or lived the life of a warrior. - The TM is loud, obnoxious, always trying to unnecessarily dominate his world, when Alphas silently watch. This particular loser is racist against muslims, because he thinks that’s what makes him cool in a patriotic 2A movement because he’s a follower. Real Alphas that actual fought for this country, fought side by side with Muslims and respect their warrior ethos and their religion. - TM put down others to boost their own egos, not realizing they are burning bridges quicker than they build them. Whats happening in California and Oregon in the extraordinarily early start to this fire season deserves to be labeled apocalyptic. Supercharged by climate change, the scale has already been historic. And at this point, there is no way to predict how much more loss and trauma from these vicious infernos--smaller outbreaks merging together into larger blazes-- will be suffered. The media has been full of images of these events. Still, its a special challenge for photographers and news organizations to capture images that reflect the otherwordly nature of whats been happening. This photo by Karl Mondon for the San Jose Mercury rises to that level. It was taken last Wednesday near Lake Oroville in Northern California. The effect he captured is called a fire whirl.
