By the late hours of September 2nd, 1885, twenty-eight Chinese American miners lay dead among the smoldering ruins of the Rock Springs, Wyoming Chinatown. Tensions between Chinese and white immigrant miners and the resulting massacre were fueled by local labor groups’ concerted push for a narrative that Chinese miners were taking jobs away from European immigrant laborers. At the time, Union Pacific Coal Mining Company gave the Chinese workers exclusive access to prime mining territories and preference to those that would accept lower wages. For years white miners had been vocal and forceful in their outrage toward the influx of Chinese workers in the United States. Reaching a boiling point, the union miners assaulted the Chinese miner’s settlement, burning seventy-eight houses and shops to the ground, murdering twenty-eight people, and injuring fifteen, throwing some of the wounded into the fires to die. The townsfolk fled for their lives into the hills while all their earthly possessions and businesses burned in the valley below. It was not until a week later that U.S. troops arrived not to condemn those responsible but to safely escort the Chinese miners back to work. President Grover Cleveland asserted that reparations be made to those Chinese whose property was destroyed, and the Union Pacific eventually fired forty-five of the white miners involved in the massacre. However, no legal action was ever taken against the assailants and newspapers showed sympathy toward the white man’s plight of the yellow peril. Every American story needs to be told. En orden de izquierda a derecha son : Chuma Taberna (hermano del autor de la imagen), Erviti y Fulgencio Andía, “Moquito”, un jovencísimo voluntario de Olite. Hecha por el también requeté Sebastián Taberna. Los Tercios de Requetés fueron cuerpo de voluntarios que luchaba en defensa de la tradición religiosa y de la monarquía carlista . Desde el establecimiento de la II República se formaron unidades paramilitares carlistas en zonas de influencia carlista con la misión de custodiar edificios religiosos, vigilar los círculos carlistas, proteger los mítines y actos políticos tradicionalistas. Con la preparación del golpe estas unidades se fueron militarizando y jugaron un papel clave en la sublevación del Noreste de España. Alrededor de 60.000 requetés participaron en la guerra, fueron una de las unidades con más bajas ya que en numerosas ocasiones ejercían roles de tropas de choque. 🎉 John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace - tickets now on sale! 🎉 In 2021, Towner Eastbourne will present the most comprehensive major exhibition of work in over 50 years by John Nash, one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. This accompanies a book published by Thames & Hudson and written by Andy Friend, with a foreward by David Dimbleby, Towner Chairman. Combining acute observation and a strong individual vision, John Nash’s oeuvre includes many of the finest depictions of the British landscape created in the 20th century. In a career spanning more than seven decades, Nash produced work across a range of mediums, from iconic oil paintings, now housed in some of Britain’s most important collections, to accomplished wood engravings, line-drawings, lithographs and watercolours. But dont just take it from us. Heres what Alistair Sooke recently had to say in The Telegraph... Paul Nash ... is among the most celebrated British artists of his generation, subject of umpteen monographs and exhibitions – including, in 2016, a retrospective at Tate Britain. The same cannot be said for his younger brother, John (or Jack, to his friends), who has been all but forgotten since his last retrospective, at the Royal Academy, more than half a century ago. A brisk, compelling new biography, John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace, hopes to set that right. Dear friends! As some of you might have already heard, a massive police raid took place at RAF25 last Saturday. Several law enforcement agencies combined efforts to organise one of the largest illegal operations the local scene have seen in recent years. There were threats, insults, destroyed and damaged property, i.e. all sorts of human rights violations. After they left, the show went on and most artists from the original Deprave x Monasterio lineup got to perform, although to a somewhat smaller crowd. We would like to thank everyone who happened to be inside the club at that moment for staying brave and compassionate – you all did great, and they clearly did not expect that.
