US postage stamp. Scott #2838d (1994) World War II - Road to Victory Airborne Units Spearhead Attacks A war that touched virtually every nation and was fought on nearly every continent and ocean, World War II required new military, air, and naval strategies. Trained for assault by air, airborne troops, also called paratroops, paratroopers, and sky soldiers, added a new dimension to the war. Transported to combat areas by plane, these airborne units would parachute behind enemy lines where their primary tasks were to blow up bridges, destroy communications, and cut off supplies and reinforcements. Often taking the enemy by surprise, they would engage in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Although the Germans first used sky soldiers when they captured the Netherlands in 1940, it was the Allies who made the most effective use of paratroops. Forming a complete army of sky soldiers, they coordinated parachute attacks with other air, land, and naval operations. From the middle of the war until its end, United States Army paratroopers successfully spearheaded attacks in Sicily, Normandy, and the Netherlands. In the Philippines, airborne troops also recaptured Corregidor from Japanese forces. Since World War II, airborne forces have taken part in all major military operations. #stamp #stamps #usps #postagestamps #mail #stampcollecting #snailmail #philatelic #philately #stampcollection #stampcollector #1994 #worldwarii #war #wwii - @stampcollecting on Instagram

“It is not book-learning young men need, not instruction about this and that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause them to be loyal to a trust, to act promptly, [to] concentrate their energies” -Elbert Hubbard - This is the foundation for the Out of Regs. - It’s fun to joke about hair regulations and to poke holes in some of the nuances in the military. But that’s not really what it’s all about. - You can’t just go from nothing to being the person skirting the rules. In a sense, you’ve got to pay your dues. Now hear me out, we’re not talking about actually breaking rules. We’re just talking about how you conduct yourself. Did you hit your workout? Get your taskers done on time? Contribute to the team? If you’re the one walking with swagger and you haven’t done anything to earn it, then that’s where your wrong. - Be a good dude. Do your job better than anyone else. I don’t care if you’re bagging groceries, sitting in an office, or making hell rain down with the boys. If you’re not putting out, then it’s all for nothing. - So, let that glorious flow cause your SNCO’s blood pressure to raise. Joke around all you want. Enjoy your job. But actually give yourself some juice to back it up. Be the person that everyone knows can get it done. - @outofregspomade on Instagram

British soldiers of the 12th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, are working in a communication trench in Ploegsteert Wood. 11th June 1917, Battle of Messines. —— In the part closer to the camera in the trench, you see 4 soldiers looking at a map, perhaps preparing for their next advance. —— Lots of their equipment hangs on the sides of the trench, including a PH Hood gas mask bag. This was rather unusual as but that time in 1917 almost all troops would’ve just had the newer Small Box Respirator, meaning one of those soldiers still was using the PH Hood. —— The PH Hood/Helmet (PH meaning Phenate Hexamine) was an early British Gas mask of WW1, introduced in July 1915 after the ghastly Second Battle of Ypres which brought in chemical warfare. A funny part about this gas mask is when you use the exhale valve it makes a funny sound. KIMPO AIRFIELD - KOREAN WAR, SEPTEMBER 1950 In this great photo from September 1950, the US Marines on the ground are greeting 2 pilots of a Mustang fighter plane at Kimpo airfield in South Korea. A major objective after the famous Inchon Landing was to recapture and secure the Kimpo Airfield, which was located closest to Seoul. Recapturing this airfield from the North Korea communists was critical in allowing US Air Force fighter planes to provide close air support to the US ground troops as they were fighting and advancing towards Seoul. This airfield was also critical for cargo planes to use for supplying the troops as they made their advance on the ground. As the Korean War progressed, various airbases were established closest to the front lines to allow fighter planes cargo planes, and helicopters to fly and provide support to the fighting forces on the ground. This photo shows the very first Mustang P51 fighter plane to land right after the US Marines had recaptured and secure the Kimpo airfield in September 1950, just a few days after the Inchon Landing. From many interviews I conducted with Korean War veterans, I learned they have a great admiration and respect for each other. For the troops on the ground, the fighter pilots were their saviors and for the pilots flying in the sky, they regarded the infantry soldiers as the real heroes. This post is dedicated in honor of these brothers in arms, who fought with great courage to save the people of South Korea from communist tyranny. Their tremendous courage and sacrifices will never be forgotten, Susan Kee - Honoring Korean War Veterans PHOTO CAPTION: Captain Bill Evans, (L), of Norwich, Connecticut, and Major Gerald Brown of Phoenix, Arizona, squat on the wing of a Mustang fighter and chat with some of the Marines that recaptured Kimpo Airport from the North Korean Communists. HONOR A VETERAN 💙 Today’s final tribute for three veterans was submitted by one of our Torchbearers, @alan_t_hino. “Tom Shishido (#1): Uncle Tom served in the MIS as a Technician 5th Grade and fondly recalls serving under MacArthur for some time while overseas. Like many MIS servicemen, Uncle Tom rarely talked about his military service. Although I could never fully express my gratitude, this tribute is a small token of my appreciate for his brave sacrifices and honoring his legacy. Thank you, Uncle Tom! I continue to honor my promise of preserving your story and legacy. Hobi Fujiu (#2): Uncle Hobi served in the Anti-Tank Company of the 442nd as a Technician 5th Grade. It surprised me to learn that he volunteered for service out of the Amache Concentration Camp in Colorado. He flew into Europe on gliders and even took part in the planning for the Rescue of the Lost Battalion. His valiant efforts earned him a Bronze Star. RIP Uncle Hobi, I continue to honor my promise of preserving your story and legacy. Minoru Miyasaki (#3): Although I did not have the privilege of meeting Minoru Miyasaki, he volunteered out of camp and served as a Private First Class in G Company of the 442nd. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for his valiant efforts. His son, Kevin Miyasaki, says that he never expressed bitterness about being interned in a concentration camp and that his father rarely ever spoke about his military service. Thank you for your service, Minoru!” #goforbroke #honoraveteran - @gfbnec on Instagram

- Me, circa 1990. I was six-four, gangly, clumsy and 170 pounds soaking wet, but I managed to get through the training.

76 years ago… On September 15, 1944, U.S. Marines with 1st Marine Division fighting in World War II landed on the volcanic island of Peleliu. This ferocious battle lasted until November 25th, 1944 and resulted in a higher death toll than any U.S. military amphibious assault in history. The U.S. forces took four days to secure the southwest area of the island, after the Japanese had taken a new approach with their strategies. When the Marines advanced north, they encountered Japanese forces hidden in caves dug in the rocky surfaces of Umurbrogol Mountain, also known as “Bloody Nose Ridge.” This battle gave substantial insight to U.S. commanders on strategies that would later contribute to overcoming obstacles faced at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. #Marines #U.S. Marines #USMC #bluediamond #1stmarinedivision #WWII #Peleliu - @1stmardiv on Instagram
