Megalodon hunting...prehistoric elephants! 😨 By PaleoGuy (James Kuether) The Megalodon, which went extinct millions of years ago, was the largest shark ever to prowl the oceans and one of the largest fish on record. The scientific name, Carcharocles megalodon, means giant tooth, and for good reason: Its massive teeth are almost three times larger than the teeth of a modern great white shark. The megalodons fossilized bones and teeth give scientists major clues about what the creature was like and when it died off. In 2014, a research group at the University of Zurich studied megalodon fossils using a technique called optimal linear estimation to determine their age. Their research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that most of the fossils date back to the middle Miocene epoch to the Pliocene epoch (15.9 million to 2.6 million years ago). All signs of the creatures existence ended 2.6 million years ago in the current fossil record, the authors wrote. For comparison, our earliest Homo sapiens ancestors emerged only 2.5 million years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, according to the University of California Museum of Paleontology. A very small portion of the Zurich studys data — 6 out of 10,000 simulations — showed a 1% chance that these giant sharks could still be alive. Whats your opinion/ approach on how paleoartists bring to life prehistoric animals, especially dinosaurs? 🤔 Elephants, zebras, and rhinos would all look pretty different if they were interpreted the same way dinosaurs are. ILLUSTRATING LONG-EXTINCT CREATURES IS DIFFICULT, but important work. With no living specimens to observe, it’s up to “paleoartists” who draw, paint, or otherwise illustrate the creatures of prehistory as we think they might’ve been. Their work is the reason that when we talk about velociraptors, stegosaurs, or even woolly mammoths, we have some idea of what they looked like. But since all we have to go on are fossils, deciding how a dinosaur would have looked is as much art as it is science. And there’s at least one paleoartist who thinks we might be getting things wrong. C.M. Kosemen is an Istanbul-based artist and author (along with John Conway and Darren Naish) of the 2012 book, All Yesterdays: Unique and Speculative Views of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals. This map was submitted to Congress in 1922 to support an anti-lynching bill, H. R. 13, introduced by Representative Leonidas Dyer of Missouri. The Dyer bill had already passed in the House and awaited a vote in the Senate. The map was created by a leader in the anti-lynching crusade, Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Music is my life ! The breaks we use in DnB Jungle come from Funk,soul & Hiphop predominantly from Black artists. The Basslines were taken from Dub/Reggae/Dancehall So many of the building blocks for Drum and bass/Jungle music originated from Samples of Black artists. Many many of my peers since the early 90s are Black. Without Black people’s contribution to music I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Africans were brought to present day Georgetown South Carolina on September 29, 1526 by Lucas Vasquez Ayllon. The first African slaves arrived in present day United States as part of the San Miguel de Gualdape colony (most likely located in the Winyah Bay area of present-day South Carolina), founded by Spanish explorer Lucas Vásquez de Ayllón in 1526. The ill-fated colony was almost immediately disrupted by a fight over leadership, during which the enslaved people revolted and fled the colony to seek refuge among local Native Americans. DeAyllón and many of the colonists died shortly afterwards of an epidemic, and the colony was abandoned, leaving the escaped slaves behind on North American soil. In 1565, the colony of Saint Augustine in Florida became the first permanent European settlement in North America, and included an unknown number of African slaves. Until the early 1700s, African slaves were difficult to acquire in the colonies that became the United States, as most were sold in the West Indies. One of the first major establishments of African slavery in these colonies occurred with the founding of Charles Town and South Carolina in 1670. The colony was founded mainly by planters from the overpopulated sugar island colony of Barbados, who brought relatively large numbers of African slaves from that island. For several decades it was still difficult to acquire African slaves north of the Caribbean. To meet labor needs, colonists had practiced Indian slavery for some time. The Carolinians transformed the Indian slave trade during the late 1600s and early 1700s by treating slaves as a trade commodity to be exported, mainly to the West Indies. Alan Gallay estimates that between 1670 and 1715, between 24,000 and 51,000 Indian slaves were exported from South Carolina — much more than the number of Africans imported to the colonies of the future United States during the same period. The first Africans to be brought to English North America landed in Virginia in 1619. These individuals appear to have been treated as indentured servants, and a significant number of African slaves even won their freedom through fulfilling a work contract . - @neemafilms on Instagram
