Interesting comparison. Results show that africana’s as a whole had less conflict with LGBT demographics as they’re more comfortable with their sexuality a result of healthy masculinity. On the contrary, Jamaica’s prejudice against homosexuals and in fact also femininity isn’t something to be so proud of as a man with Jamaican descent. This comes as a result of a economic downfall and lack of jobs which stimulate the male masculine mind (being the breadwinner or feeling useful), and the devotion to religion. In 1970 there was a crash in the economy which lead to this knock on effect. Men had to express masculinity in another form thus resulting in a physical expression. Religion in Jamaica is a necessity which cant be deemed unworthy, Jamaica has the world most churches per square mile, heavily catholic which diminishes and devalues homosexuality and treats it as a sin (@chefdeemusic). The links to slavery are very strong to the hatred of homosexuals - slave masters would sometimes rape the most dominant masculine male to emasculate the man and make a mockery of his power. Bare in mind Jamaica is the third worst place in the world for homicide rates, disputes are the number one killer, not crime suggesting toxic masculinity is the leading problem in Jamaica leading to poor investment due to statistics. Obviously, these factors to me aren’t valuable reasons to treat homosexuality with such hatred, and change is being made in Jamaica. Pero si todos hacemos las cosas bien con la basura que generamos, ¿por qué la mayoría de nuestra basura termina en los océanos? ¿Cómo llega verdaderamente la basura al mar?⠀ ⠀ Mucha gente seguramente se hace estas preguntas y más, en especial esa gente que sí trata de cuidar el medio ambiente.⠀ ⠀ Hay muchas formas en que esos plásticos llegan al océano:⠀ ⠀ Gente que tira basura en la calle, personas que viven en situación de calle y revuelven los contenedores en busca de comida, tirando todos los residuos para la vereda, el perro del vecindario que también está en busca de algo para comer y rompe toda la bolsa que dejaste fuera del contenedor.⠀ ⠀ Los buques cargueros de diferentes países que les es más fácil tirar la basura en el mar. En la pesca, las llamadas “redes fantasmas” (redes de miles de kilómetros) son abandonadas por los pescadores. Las tortugas, focas, lobos y leones marinos, entre otros, terminan llevándose lo peor de todo esto. En la mayoría de los casos, termina causándoles la muerte.⠀ ⠀ Como podemos ver, hay varias formas de contaminar, pero todas terminan en un solo responsable, y ese es el HOMBRE.⠀ ⠀ Actualmente podemos encontrar plásticos en todos los océanos del mundo. I wrote an essay for the newly returned Culture Desk section via the @SfChronicle that is currently out. It acts as a coda to the fine art show that premiered this week. To write the piece I had to go back through the last four months of my life, which was challenging. When I say that I am grateful for my community, as I often do, this is what I mean. This process was made possible, due to the many conversations I had, the rants I was able to freely vent, the emotions I was able to openly express. It allowed me to pull from, and make some sense from the pain, to gain some clarity to write this essay and make this show. You know who you are, because I thank you personally every day of my existence. Additional thanks to my editor SF, who assigned me the story last week and trusted in my ability to turn it around. If you’ve been around for a minute, you probably remember when I made a live stream of an antipete protest in Amstelveen two years ago and received about 8.000 death, rape and racist threats aimed at protesters as well as myself and just people of color and black people in general • So, I decided to file charges because racists might think themselves inviolable, but the law says otherwise and your privilege will not always protect you. Now, 25 people will be prosecuted with the trials starting from the 14th of September till the 21st (give or take a few days) • This is not incidental. As an outspoken, visible black woman journalist and columnist online harassment is almost a part of the job description. Simply our existence in spaces white racists deem to be theirs invokes hatred. I believe these cases don’t appear before a judge a lot (only remember @sylvanasimons cases a couple of years ago). But they should. Needless to say this is not my favorite pastime as I rather just do my job (or go skinny dipping). But I think it’s important to make a statement and create precedent against all forms of discrimination and online harassment basically. Not just for myself (but also, because put some respek on my name) but for those who might not get the chance to but are in similar circumstances at work, when protesting or just simply being antiracist. And to help create the society we want to live in where racial violence, verbally or otherwise against anyone is not accepted. On 28-30th of August we are calling for global actions on the streets and online for the Amazon rainforest. @fridaysforfuturenireland will be doing a digital protest in solidarity- feel free to send me your digital strike and I can include it! Today, about 17% of Amazonia has already been deforested. If 20-25% deforestation is exceeded, more than a half of the rainforest will turn into a savannah. This year we saw a huge increase of fires: 6,803 only in July 2020, 28% more than in July 2019, 10,136 fires were reported in the first 10 days of August alone! The EU-Mercosur trade agreement would fuel the destruction of the Amazon. Ratifying it while deforestation is increasing would be a victory for President Bolsonaro and a clear sign that the EU does not care about the rainforest. If European leaders are serious about stopping Amazon deforestation, they must put the EU-Mercosur agreement on ice. Moreover Bolsonaro wants to pass a law which allows deforestation on indigenous land. Land protected by indigenous people has a higher biodiversity than other land in Amazonia. Imagine you woke up one day and all of a sudden your empathy turned into apathy. Are you now justified to cause harm to others? Of course not.
