PFC. Ramon S. Subejano was a Filipino-American soldier who earned the nickname One Man Army for slaying bodies all over the European Theater during WW2. He served with Co. A, 358th Inf. Reg., 90th Inf Div and saw combat on Utah Beach on DDAY, the Ardennes, Northern France, the Netherlands, and deep into Germany. He served as a sniper, was wounded a total of 4 times during the war, earned 17 medals, and has been credited for killing hundreds of Germans, reports suggest up to 400. During one battle, he was the sole survivor of his unit after his patrol was ambushed. On December 7, 1944 in the vicinity of Dillengen, Germany, Subejano single handedly attacked a fortified building, making his way under devastating 20 mm and machine gun fire. He entered the enemy filled structure, going from room to room, killing five enemy, wounding six and capturing 37; an action which would earn him the Silver Star. At the end of the war he was flown to London for the victory parade, where he was presented to King George and Sir Winston Churchill. Back in the States, he was hailed as a hero and in later life met Marilyn Monroe, JFK and other famous people. 412-414 (172-174 old numbers) Washington Street. Originally built in 1853 as an Armory, which helped supply troops with guns and ammo throughout the Civil War. ¤ In 1881 and again in 1893 the building was remodeled slightly becoming the new home of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Celebrations and gatherings of all kinds were held at the Odd Fellows Hall, decorations provided of course by United Decorating ¤ In the 1920’s the Odd Fellows moved to 227 Washington and the Palace Garden began to occupy the space. Much like its predecessor, the Palace Garden was a hall that often hosted cabarets and a variety of other performances. ¤ The building was once again renovated to its current appearance. Information about the “Lining Store” appears to be nonexistent. In the 1940s it was the home of W.T. Grant Department Store. A wooden escalator was installed to transport customers between the two massive store floors. ¤ In the 1970’s 412-414 became Queens Department Store, a local favorite for everything and anything boasting, “Queens Will Treat You Right.” Eventually Blockbuster moved into the space, but sadly closed in 2011. THIS WEEKEND ONLY!👉 Captain Harmon’s Company of Snowshoe Rangers will be reenacting the patrolling of the New England Frontier during the 1740s and 1750s. They will demonstrate the use of flintlock muskets and traditional snowshoes, plus the equipment, clothing, and tactics used by the frontier militia! Visitors can tour the house, observe the gunsmith Steve Woodman and Horner Chuck Walker practice their trades, and watch food being prepared in 18th century fashion! Open Saturday 10-4, Sunday 9-2.
