I’ve never been a morning person. I suffer from insomnia. On any given night, I get between 2 and 5 hours of sleep. I’m very sensitive to light when I sleep, so when the sun is up, I’m up. Before I moved into Hottie, I used to wake up with the sun, grab my phone & start scrolling until it was time to get out of bed. Now I wake up with the sun, grab my camera & a dog & start exploring until it’s time for breakfast. It’s a habit that I’ve noticed recently, is slowly but surely turning me into a better version of myself. There’s something about catching a sunrise on a lake, or behind a mountain when everyone else is asleep that is nothing short of therapeutic. Those morning adventures have turned into a chance to get familiar with not only my surroundings, but my self. The walk becomes a pilgrimage, the vantage point itself, my altar. My mind, usually racing with 600 thoughts at once (thanks ADHD) quiets down & whatever problems it’s started to stress about start to make sense. In the grand scheme of things, most things really aren’t that big anyway. Those moments of stillness that I share with no one but my dog & my camera (and sometimes, when I shoot from bed, a sleeping Guilly) have become something of church for me. A moment shared between me, my closest loved ones, the few others willing to wake up & brave a world on the precipice of a new day, and the silent expanse of the universe. A year ago, if you had told me that moving into Hottie would make something as mundane as a sunrise feel closer to the Universe, or to God, whatever you call it, than any word or sermon I’ve heard in my raised-catholic-turned-spiritual life, I’d have questioned you. But now I know it to be true. Every time I’ve gone out looking for magic, I’ve found it in a sunrise. Anytime I’ve needed peace, I’ve found it in a still morning. I’ve never been a morning person, but I think somewhere along the road, I’ve become a believer. Of what? I’m not really sure yet, but give me a couple more sunrises behind a lens, and I just might be able to tell you. - @doesthiscountasvanlife on Instagram
