To honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, the Department of Indiana donated $50,000 to the expansion of the 911 Memorial in Indianapolis. The project will highlight heroes and honor US Army Lieutenant General Tim Maude, a Hoosier serving at the Pentagon who was killed that day.⠀ .⠀ The project will also include the addition of national and state flags and an 800-pound piece of Indiana limestone from the Pentagon crash site on the 30 by 10-foot memorial extension. When the topics for the first presidential debate were announced, climate change was notably omitted which seemed out of touch considering the persistent wildfires raging in California. However, at last night’s presidential debate, moderator Chris Wallace surprised the nation by asking a pointed question to President Trump about his understanding of climate science, after the President previously stated that science was inconclusive on how much a warming planet is driving California’s wildfires. Worth noting is that Wallace’s decision to add a climate question came as 71 House members, 37 senators, 45 progressive and climate groups, and hundreds of thousands of grassroots voices pushed him to ask the question, according to @climatepower2020. BIDEN + HARRIS FOLLOW PRECEDENT Today, less than 48 hours after the explosive @NYTimes investigative piece on more than a decade’s worth of Trump’s tax returns, @JoeBiden and his running mate @KamalaHarris released their 2019 tax returns, in accordance with precedent. Jill and Joe Biden paid $299,346 in federal income taxes in 2019 on a taxable income of $944,737, making their tax rate 31%. Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff paid $1,185,628 in federal income taxes after bringing in over $3 million in taxable income; their tax rate was effectively 39%. President @RealDonaldTrump and @VP Mike Pence have not released their 2019 tax returns. Trump still refuses on the grounds that he’s under audit…which does not actually prevent disclosure. While President Trump gets the most heat, this is an incredible departure from tradition in the VP realm, as well. All vice presidents going back to Walter Mondale in the 1970s have made their tax returns available. Pence released his returns through 2015 during the 2016 election, but since becoming vice president, he has not made any of his returns public. Reminder— in 2016 and 2017, President Trump’s returns show that he paid $750 in federal income taxes, and $0 in 10 of the last 15 years. Fun fact for those who made it to the end: the precedent of presidents and presidential candidates releasing their tax returns was triggered by the outrage that flowed when the Providence Journal uncovered that in 1970, President Richard Nixon in his first year in office paid $792.81 in federal taxes on an income of $200k. Since then, every president has made that information public. Eleven years ago, @BarackObama declared 9/11 as a day of remembrance through service. This is the story of how Jay Winuk’s advocacy in the wake of love and loss helped bring that declaration to life. Jay Winuk remembers his younger brother Glenn as someone who always went the extra mile to help others. And on the morning of September 11th, 2001, Glenn sprang into action. As a decorated volunteer firefighter and EMT, Glenn ran toward the chaos with his first responder kit in hand, only after helping his co-workers in his own office find safety. At just 40-years-old, Glenn spent the final moments of his life saving strangers. Inspired by his late brother’s devotion to community service, Jay joined David Paine in 2002 to help build the 9/11 Day of Observance initiative and advocate for the anniversary to be designated as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance.” They were elated in 2009 when President Obama signed the proclamation: September 11th was not only a day of remembrance, but a day of service, too. Later, Jay went on to co-found @911Day, an organization inspired by the same spirit and unity that arose in America in the immediate aftermath of the tragic attacks. And this year, organizers are asking folks to participate virtually by committing good deeds in the victims’ honor—from feeding first responders to supporting local restaurants. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg lies in repose under the portico at the top of the front steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington. She will lie in repose for two days at the court where she served for 27 years. As the casket arrived at the Supreme Court Wednesday morning, former law clerks of Ginsburg lined the court steps, serving as honorary pallbearers. After a private ceremony in the court’s Great Hall, her casket was moved outside the building to the top of the courts front steps so that public mourners can pay their respects. Via The Met: “OUR LABYRINTH is a live performance for an online audience, streamed over three weeks from three Met galleries while the Museum is closed. Each performance features a different cast member, a single dancer who uses a stylized broom to sweep a mound of rice along a labyrinthine path of their choosing. Performing this profoundly spiritual task, the dancer may encounter obstacles along the way but continues to navigate silently and mindfully. Lee conceives of this project as a gift from the performers to the viewers, providing a pure space both physically and spiritually. The Royal Bank, corner of Elizabeth and Collins Streets, Melbourne, Australia, c. 1929. Prior to the ANZ, three other banks have traded from the southeast corner of the intersection of Collins and Elizabeth Streets. Partially visible in this photograph of c. 1929, is the earlier bank building on this site. It was designed by Terry & Oakden, and built for the City of Melbourne Bank in 1886. By 1903 another bank, the Royal Bank of Australia traded from these premises. The existing building on this corner, built by the ES&A Bank in 1939-40, retained the title of Royal Bank in the name of its branch here (as has the ANZ). Visible to the right of the Royal Bank is the Australian Building in Elizabeth Street. The Australian Building was, at the time of its completion in 1889-90, one of the tallest commercial buildings in the world. Also visible is the Brooks Robinson building completed in 1910. Brooks Robinson were merchants in building products including glazing, paints and oils; and the building served as showrooms for the products they sold. Their handsome Edwardian building, designed by the architects Inskip & Kemp, is extant. As a group, the Royal Bank, the Australian and the Brooks Robinson buildings, formed a fine collection of late-Victorian and Edwardian commercial architecture in this part of the city. Nineteen years ago, pure evil attacked our homeland. Three thousand Americans lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Since that terrible day, thousands more brave patriots have given their lives in service to our country to prevent another attack. Today, I will have the great honor of addressing cadets at The Citadel in Charleston. Some of the cadets were not yet born on 9/11, but I want to remind them that the fight to defeat terrorism - as well as honor the lives lost - carries on. As an Air Force veteran, I am in awe of the courage displayed by the members of our military and the resilience of the American people. 9/11 may be a day of very painful memories, but it is also a testament to the unshakeable spirit of America. Every night for one month, Wodiczko animated the bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln in Union Square with the voices, images, and gestures of US veterans he had interviewed, using the built environment to disrupt public silence over the trauma inflicted by war, recasting the monument and our relationship to historical memory in a very different light. + Testimony has become a key component of Wodickzo’s projections — how do you communicate and create a platform for someone’s story, particularly one of struggle and marginalization? Over 140 years after his death, a monument to Octavius V. Catto (1839 – 1871) was unveiled #onthisday in 2017 at Philadelphias City Hall. Catto successfully fought for the desegregation of Philadelphia’s public trolleys and ratification of the 15th amendment to the Constitution, which bars voting discrimination on the basis of race. In addition to his work as a Civil Rights activist, he was also an educator, scholar, writer, and accomplished baseball player. Catto was shot and killed outside of his home on South Street on October 10, 1871, the first election day that African Americans were allowed to vote. Artist Branly Cadet was selected by a jury of artists and art professionals in 2013 to create this memorial, which was commissioned by the Octavius V. Catto Memorial Fund. The 12′ tall bronze statue at the center of the memorial shows Catto mid-stride with his palms and chest facing forward. He walks away from five granite blocks behind him, which represent an 1860s streetcar. Riprendo con orgoglio questo elogio del Financial Times perché non è solo un plauso al Governo che sta gestendo l’emergenza Coronavirus con estrema razionalità e serietà, ma anche a tutti voi cittadini, agli imprenditori, ai bambini, ai medici e a tutto il personale sanitario, perché avete agito con un senso di responsabilità esemplare. Se oggi i contagi in Italia sono sotto controllo e contano un numero più basso rispetto al resto d’Europa infatti, come ci conferma il Financial Times, è per tre ragioni principali. Siamo stati il primo Paese in Europa ad affrontare lemergenza. Non avevamo esperienze pregresse sulle quali basarci, nessuno aveva mai vissuto e gestito una pandemia. Ma sia il sistema sanitario sia il Governo ha avuto più tempo per pianificare la fase post-lockdown e lallentamento delle misure restrittive è stato più graduale. Turquoise Mountain is a charity founded in 2006 by The Prince to revive historic areas and traditional crafts, provide jobs, skills and a renewed sense of pride. One of the common questions I tend to recieve about @placesyoullpray is, “how has the public reacted to your project?” And almost every time, I have to pause because there is no one answer. While majority of the responses have been positive with occasional words of encouragement, support, and stories of shared experiences... the other responses are negative and filled with loud comments policing the way someone prays, to comments that stem from internal prejudice, Islamophobia, crab mentality, insecurities, etc. I’ve come to accept and embrace each of these views because it’s entirely okay (to an extent). No matter what project, product, or piece you end up creating and/or sharing with the public, someone(s) is bound to criticize you for it. It’s almost as if it’s human nature at this point: to question others and their motives. While that’s okay and not exactly a bad trait, it’s important to stay balanced in the way we speak to others and to be conscious of the word choice we use. Good, respectful communication goes a long way; violent language and abrasive insults do not. And while some struggle to see the larger picture in projects such as Places You’ll Pray and those similar to it, there are those who also enjoy seeing representation they haven’t seen before. Even moreso, they enjoy the opportunity to be a part of the conversation by easily submitting their own photos and stories. Mi primera reacción ante la decisión de liberar presos políticos es celebrarlo y presionar la liberación de todos a quienes se les violentan sus derechos. En una segunda dimensión esta el por qué toman esa decisión. Sería ridículo pensar que no hay un cálculo político. Siempre lo hay. Algunos creen que se trata de ceder a la presión internacional y es una muestra de debilidad. Yo tiendo a pensar que es un movimiento que busca hacer más potable una elección parlamentaria controlada por el gobierno y a la cual Maduro quiere darle más validez frente a sus propio mercado político y agregar, de carambola, un puntillazo en la fractura de la oposición. Ya no hay dos posiciones encontradas sino multifracturas difíciles de “remendar”. Encontramos por un lado la propuesta de abstención pasiva y continuidad administrativa de quienes controlan el liderazgo opositor (y los activos del país en el exterior). Es una especie de ERE paralizada que no producirá cambios, ni en la dirección de la oposición (que se quedaría inamovible y sin validarse “per sécula seculorum ”) ni tampoco en el gob, que en definitiva seguirá siendo el objetivo incumplido. La segunda propuesta es la intervención extranjera. Frente a esta hay una realidad como un templo: la invasión es una quimera que sólo vive en el deseo de quienes la promueven. Como dice Elliot Abraham: “un plan B surrealista”. Finalmente está la propuesta de participar en la elección, pese a que no es democrática. Dos variantes: la de una MDN sin conexiones populares ni representatividad política (una garantia de abstención demoledora) y una propuesta de Capriles, un líder más influyente, que propone usar la elección como una protesta nacional y un motivo de movilización. De acuerdo a la teoría política y a la evidencia empírica, está opción luce más racional (pese a los ataques radicales), pero se enfrenta a bloqueadores que parecen infranqueables: división opositora irresoluble, rechazo USA, desconfianza de la pob y apatía generalizada. Pero pese a que todo luce negro, los escenarios son dinámicos y al menos los eventos recientes vuelven a poner el juego en movimiento y eso siempre es el caldo de cultivo para la creatividad. - @luisvleon on Instagram

Hélder Sousa Silva sublinhou que o acesso à habitação constitui um problema sistémico e global, atingindo a maior parte dos Estados-Membros. Em Portugal, face aos elevados custos de aquisição e arrendamento das habitações, esta crise afeta não só as pessoas mais vulneráveis, mas também a própria classe média, sendo que as autarquias têm desempenhado um papel determinante no apoio às famílias, dando os exemplos dos programas de apoio ao arrendamento, da construção de habitações a custos controlados, do incentivo aos proprietários na reabilitação de imóveis degradados e da limitação à transformação de habitação em alojamento local para fins turísticos. Neste contexto, propôs que os Governos Nacionais exerçam a função de regulação, mas deixem que sejam os municípios a definir políticas específicas, e que apoiem financeiramente estas autarquias na implementação de programas locais. Pilots and support crews on both sides took to the skies and battled for control of airspace over Great Britain, and the English Channel. The powerful, combat-experienced Luftwaffe hoped to conquer Britain easily, but the RAF proved a formidable enemy. The Battle of Britain was a turning point in World War II; if the RAF had not held off the Luftwaffe, Hitler would have likely moved forward with his Operation Sea Lion invasion of the British Isles. after nearly six months, the Met finally reopened its doors to the public on August 29. Photos for @bloomberg @bloombergbusiness on the morning of the reopening. This was the first time the Met had been closed for more than three days in over 100 years. New safety procedures are in place including temperature checks, timed entrances, mandatory masks and of course social distancing (which isn’t difficult given the museum’s 2 million sq ft of floor space). I think this is the closest I’ve ever been to the Supreme Court and I noticed the words “Equal Justice Under Law” etched on the building. I guess the word “equal” surprised me. As a young woman who began the practice of law in 1985, I have always been grateful the path Justice Ginsburg paved for women like me. Today, I had the honor of paying my respects to the first woman ever to lie in state in the United States Capitol. It was humbling to participate in the beautiful and powerful ceremony honoring her life. Ms. Denyce Graves sang the American Anthem written by Nora Jones, with words that were perfectly sang, ‘America, America I gave my best to you.’ Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer and changed the laws in America to ensure justice for women. She fought for state-funded schools to admit women, for women to be able to sign a mortgage on their own, and for the protection of pregnant women in the workplace, among many other accomplishments. I am fortunate to have practiced law in the same era Justice Ginsburg sat on the United States Supreme Court. Outlined on the wall of her Supreme Court chamber reads a message of the book of Deuteronomy, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue’. When I asked Don Edwards (fifth frame) why he was willing to wait in the almost 100 degree heat for four hours outside the Capitol until Rep. John Lewis’ public viewing, he said “Because I owe him. He’s always been a leader. This is the smallest thing I can do for him. I have to honor his sacrifice.” For many, I think that sentiment resonates. Yes, there’s the speech during the March on Washington, the sit-ins and the beatings beyond just Bloody Sunday. But it’s also the side stories filled with wisdom and kindness I hear from opponents, colleagues and other elders that make someone like him seem larger than life. His sacrifice, spirit as a human and stances on productive non-violence mean a lot more as I get older. A federal judge is forcing Indiana to count all mail-in ballots that are postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3, as long as they arrive to county clerks by Nov. 13. That ruling comes in a lawsuit brought by Common Cause Indiana and the Indiana NAACP. A huge thanks to our summer interns: Blane, Daniel, and Alex (pictured from left to right). Our D.C. office was fortunate enough to have three University of Nevada, Reno students join us this semester, and I’d like to take a moment to recognize each of them for their dedicated service to their fellow constituents in Nevada’s Second Congressional District. Originally from Fallon, Blane recently graduated from UNR after earning a degree in Agriculture Science. Blane is a member of the Collegiate Young Farmers & Ranchers, the Nevada Farm Bureau, the FarmHouse Fraternity, LEAD Green, and the Nevada FFA. His favorite part about interning in our office was having the opportunity to work in our Nation’s Capital while gaining first-hand knowledge of how public policy is developed. Daniel is originally from Granite Bay, California and is currently earning his degree in Political Science from UNR. He is also a member of UNR Men’s Ultimate. While in Washington, Daniel expressed an interest in energy issues with one of the highlights of his internship being a co-sponsor project where our interns had the opportunity to research a piece of legislation they were passionate about and discuss it with me. Daniel also enjoyed giving Nevadans tours of the U.S. Capitol. Alex is originally from Irvine, California and is also a current student at UNR. He is a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and is earning his degree in Political Science with a minor in Public Health. Some highlights from his summer on Capitol Hill include: learning the inner workings of how the House of Representatives works, having the opportunity to show constituents from CD-2 the history of our country by guiding them through Capitol tours, and researching legislation and issues that are important to Nevadans. From serving the constituents of CD-2, to helping make sure our office operated smoothly each day, these interns have made significant contributions to Team Amodei’s Washington office this summer. I’m confident they will be successful in their future endeavors and I wish them all the best as they prepare for the next steps in their careers. Today we had a very special walk through of #BrickellBackyard with @MayorGimenez. Without the early support of @MiamiDadeCounty, The Underline wouldn’t be a reality we will all enjoy together this fall! We are on public land, it was underutilized and was an opportunity for a signature public space that can be a model for others across the world, that is why the Mayor and his team, including Alice Bravo, saw the vision our founder Meg Daly had with the idea of building a transformational linear urban park. The Mayor made sure he walked through the entire half mile of Phase 1 (still under construction), and as he was saying goodbye this is what he said, “What The Underline has done so far is excellent--it’s fantastic. Last night, the House unanimously passed my bill, the Public Safety Officer Pandemic Response Act. So many of America’s public safety officers have taken huge risks to protect us—my bill would make sure that if they should become disabled or die from COVID19, they’d be eligible for federal benefits. Just as I fought to expand benefits to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, I’ll fight for those on the front lines of the battle against COVID 19.
