Having endured a rocky couple of years in which his business was evicted from the space it was subletting and he had to effectively start again, a global pandemic that hit the UK a month after he reopened was the last thing @blocfit owner Dave Culver needed. But with hard work, dedication and a helping hand from his new landlord, he’s optimistic that the business has turned a corner. Having found a new arch to lease, Dave feels he now has the best community #climbinggym in London. #BlocFit re-opened its doors when the government #lockdown for gyms eased at the end of July. Dave has adapted the business with a new advanced booking system, cleaning regimes and more ventilation to circulate fresh air around the arch. After two weeks of operating with a few new COVID-specific protocols (temperature checks + verbal symptom screening upon entry), we are happy to report that reopening 2.0 has gone wonderfully smooth! While many weeknight climbing sessions have reached capacity, there is plenty of room in each facility and the feedback we’ve received has been exceedingly positive. To continue with our enhanced safety and disinfecting protocols during this time, we will remain members-only, by appointment only facilities. We’re happy to share the good news that starting September 21st (that’s today!) we will offer new memberships to customers needing a safety orientation or refresher by appointment only. These appointments are intended to accommodate not only brand new customers, but those climbers with previous experience who have never climbed with us before. Please know that this does not mean we are offering any kind of day use, nor are we open to the public. ••••• We will be offering two new member appointments each day for up to two members: one at 10:00am and one at 1:00pm. Sometimes you have an unexpected run... I am overwhelmed that I completed the first free ascent of „Merci la vie“ on the Eiger north face. I originally started bolting this route 10 years ago. Last year together with my super motivated friends @ninacaprez and @seanvillanuevaodriscoll we created those 8 great and demanding pitches as a team effort. During the past weeks I’ve worked on the route for a couple of days and sent it earlier then expected. A big thank you to @waendegeiss, @anne_gita and @mario_heller for your great support! With Auckland moving into level 3 lockdown from midday today (Wednesday) until midnight on Friday @climbingnz is faced with no choice but to cancel the Lead Championships this weekend. The Panmure Gym will be closed so no route setting is possible, all non-essential travel to Auckland is prohibited up until midnight Friday, & there is no certainty about restrictions beyond that time frame. The rest of NZ moves into Level 2. This is incredibly disappointing particularly knowing all the hard work that has gone into the preparations for this and other events after the previous lockdown period. Thanks to all of the volunteers who have helped in preparation and who were ready to help this week & in the weekend. If you had travelled to or were on route to Auckland already, please stay safe on the trip home. We acknowledge this is a tough moment for all our athletes. This is uncharted waters. We are still to work out what this will mean for future events this year. At this stage the schools event is still on as scheduled, however a decision on whether this goes ahead will be made early next week. We will follow up with more information in the coming days including refund processes. For now we will have to just keep wondering if @matt.rdj will throw in some bouldery moves when we DO see a another Lead event! Die seit Wochen anhaltende Schockstarre löst sich ganz langsam auf. Und endlich beginnen viele Menschen nachzudenken, zu hinterfragen und angeblich alternativlose Entscheidungen anzuzweifeln. Noch nie in unserer Geschichte wurden die Freiheitsrechte aufgrund einer so unklaren und diffusen Ausgangslage in diesem Ausmaß eingeschränkt. Noch nie wurde in so verantwortungsloser Weise die Bürger mit Angst und Schrecken unter Druck gesetzt. Und noch nie haben Politiker aller Parteien so schnell und unkritisch zehntausende Existenzen, das seelische Wohl der Bevölkerung und unsere Freiheit gefährdet. Das alles ohne wissenschaftlichen Diskurs! Mittlerweile gibt es den politischen und wissenschaftlichen Diskurs. Weniger in den öffentlichen Medien aber dafür umso mehr in den sozialen Medien. Und auf beiden Seite diskutieren renommierte Wissenschaftler, Ärzte und Verfassungsrechtler. Und auch wenn die öffentlichen Medien nun beginnen die Kritiker als Verschwörungstheoretiker, rechte oder linke Extremisten, Spinner oder pure Egoisten zu diffamieren, wird die Diskussion in der Öffentlichkeit nicht mehr aufzuhalten sein. Die neue Normalität ist auch unsere alte Normalität. Wir gehen weiterhin und seit Anbeginn der Krise zum Klettern. Denn das hält uns u.a. gesund! We are now in Phase 3 and open to members! We at Cliffs of Id are beyond stoked to be able to open our doors in a limited capacity via our online reservation system! All members are now able to come climb and work out. Reservations are for 2-hour time slots, can be made 2x/week, and up to 1 week in advance. - As a desert climber, Ive never been able to climb on anything other than sandstone, odd conglomerates, and basalt. After climbing This B@$t@rd (12a) in central Utah, I now have mad respect for anyone who climbs on granite.

- New indoor wall opened near me. That is a 20 metre high lead wall, with a top roped 20 metre route to the left.

Cochamo Collection || Food Man - Pt. 2 || On Clintons first trip to Cochamó, he found himself living alone at the high bivy in the Trinidad Valley. He would roll out from beneath the boulder every morning, scrape together a meagre portion of rice from his small and dwindling supply, and then set off into the forest, aiming for the gully between Trinidad Central and Sur. It was scrappy living, and simplicity at its best. The rumours spread around La Junta; Did you hear about crazy guy living alone up in Trinidad? I hear hes running out of food! What the hell is he doing up there? Little did they know, whenever he wasnt crouched beneath the bivy boulder, sorting sugar crystals from dirt grains one-by-one (the result of a mouse knocking over the precious container of his only remaining flavouring), he was busy establishing a truly beautiful line. And all of that jugging, cleaning, and scrappy living paid off this season, when he and Drew Marshall (@thedrewguy) managed to get the FFA of the 8 pitch Arrayan 5.12d, one of the proudest lines in Vallé Trinidad. Props to all who played a part in this, as I know it was a team effort. || Clinton Leung (@watchingstonesgrow) on the exposed 5.12d crux pitch of Arrayan.
