Yesterday was easily one of best, the hardest, and most inspiring days of my life. The weather was absolutely insane, raining every step of the way, sometimes torrential downpours and sometimes a bit less, and wind gusts of over 30 mph right in our faces. But despite all that, I had an amazing squad of DFMC team mates (several of us that managed to stick together for more than half the race), my dad who ran the last 7+ miles with me, and my loving and supportive boyfriend, family and friends who drove to multiple spots on the course throughout the day and stood in the miserable weather to cheer me on and give me wet hugs. Not to mention all the die hard, Boston Strong fans along the way, and support from friends and family near and far in the form of contributions to my fundraising for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. We ran this race for so much more than finish times and medals around necks. Every person on team DFMC has someone they’re running in honor or memory of, and most people have more than one. Every time the rain got harder or the wind blew stronger I thought about all the names I carried with me and pushed a little bit more. Spent this past weekend on a lil solo trip to Portland. What an amazing experience. I needed to get away from everything and find my center. Life has felt so chaotic recently and this slowed everything down for me. Our Broker Open House last Thursday was great! The brokers came out for a tour of the space available at 230 Long Hill Cross Rd. It was so nice to see one another after so many months of work from home. We practiced social distancing, wore masks, and kept the event small. We even had prizes!! At the risk of sounding like a broken record - we are coming up to our four year anniversary in January and I’ve been thinking a lot about the past few years! Whilst a lot has changed in that time and been refined (or scrapped completely 🤣) one thing that hasn’t changed but has gone from strength to strength is @thedoggydaycamp The basic belief behind it is that dogs deserve better - better than a one hour dog walk a day; better than a day indoors in a warehouse; better than a leash walk around the block. That for lots of dogs, a fleeting social interaction in a local park or on a footpath with owners hurrying them away from each other just isn’t enough. I believe that most dogs are happiest outside and in the company of other dogs and loving, attentive staff! I am certain that lots and lots of dogs cry out to be able to interact with other dogs - that as highly evolved and social beings - the deprivation of this dog to dog socialisation causes them stress and distress. I know that Doggy Day Camp enriches the lives of the most amazing and loving dogs - even if they are rubbish at the scent seeking, or even if they prefer to lie in the sun instead of joining in ball games or swimming - they have the option to live their best life and I’m so proud of that. ❤️🐶 - @dogsgolive on Instagram

Officers of the night shift answered a call Thursday night in reference to a dispute between a couple going through hard times and finding it difficult to feed their two toddlers and one infant. Knowing this, those officers came together and purchased food for the family so they wouldn’t go another night hungry and reached out to FISH who provided the family with more food and diapers for their baby. Tears were shed and many moments were made. The family has wished to stay anonymous and pictures of them will not be posted out of respect. Being part of an energy, water and waste intensive industry like ice hockey has been something that has always lingered in the background for me. From the 40 000 liters of water to form an ice rink, energy intensive travel, disposable plastic and graphite equipment to limitless foods and supplements, it was no surprise I wasn’t alone. Pioneers that have made immense impacts in regaining the industries environmental integrity have always inspired me. In 2015 I was fortunate enough to have breakfast with the spearhead of the NHLs environmental movement and captain of the Edmonton Oilers Andrew Ference. He told me that his biggest fear has always been becoming a hypocrite. From initiating various green initiatives in Alberta, including a recycling facility, using his venture capitalist firm to invest in bio plastics and helping establish a carbon offset program for NHL players he is an excellent example of walking the talk. One of his highlights he explained to me was biking to the TD garden with Chara and many other bruins for daily commutes during their Cup run in 2011. Andrew inspired me to lessen my ecological footprint in a very carbon and resource intensive industry and little by little (although slow to do so I will admit) I have helped reduce my negative impact on planet earth. Parking my vehicle for the past two seasons has been a real game changer for myself. Not only for appreciating the value of food accessibility and having food in the fridge from the grocery store, but also for the opportunity to mentally refresh on a nice bike ride to and from the rink. Personally the discovery of the phytoplanktons role in carbon capture and oxygen production has caught my attention. It is estimated that 50% of the oxygen we breathe is a by product of these tiny single celled organisms metabolic processes. It’s not only the Amazon Jungle, the Boreal Forrest and other densely vegetated areas that help offset our industies’ and personal activities, it is the ocean’s marine life. Since the majority of plastic is not recycled, in my humble opinion it seems to be an important area of focus. This is our route to nursery. We ride up and down this road 4 times a day, twice with our daughter Quinn in the bike. ⠀ Before the closure, cars would speed between passing places, overtaking too close and opening doors without looking to get to the station. ⠀ I’m a confident cyclist but genuinely feel most at risk on my local roads. So lord knows how it must feel for someone new to cycling. ⠀ Since the barriers have been introduced, it’s been considerably more pleasant and safer, especially with a toddler. I’ve seen noticeably more families and people riding, walking, scooting and even driving mobility aids safely in the street. ⠀ So clearly we love our new Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN), but a lot of people don’t. In Dulwich, planters and flowers were tipped on the road. In Lewisham, drivers mounted the pavement to get around them. In Ealing, oil poured on roads to cause accidents. And in Sydenham, myself and @kingalexking have had our fair share of abuse for putting the bollard up whenever it was down. ⠀ Unfortunately the anti-LTN gang are shouting louder than those that are pro. ⠀ I understand their frustrations - these are inconvenience. They will add a few minutes to their drive. The implementation was fast and without consultation (due to gov restrictions on grants). Signage is poor and in our case, the bollard was up and down constantly, adding to confusion. It’s been a bit of shambles to say the least. ⠀ But it’s a test. A 6 month test to see if they encourage more people to walk or cycle short distances rather than drive. It takes time for people to change behaviours, to find new routes, to realise it’s quicker to walk 2 miles than drive it. If the conclusion is that it hasn’t worked, I’ll accept it. But I want them given a fair chance. ⠀⠀⠀ So what can you/we/us do? I’m preaching to the converted but if you live near an LTN, go out of your way to use it (quieter is better than faster), show your support on social, comment on your local Commonplace.is and raise your hand in surveys. It’ll all make a difference. ⠀⠀⠀ For me though, the saddest outcome of the current situation is the increased divide between ‘us’ and ‘them’. It’s worse than ever 😔 - @pedallingforpints on Instagram

This was a very strange day. I was deep in feeling. Revisiting old spots that I hadn’t seen for years. It felt familiar but with an undertone of science fiction. The park was full of families. But they were walking obediently around the lake in a designated direction due to Covid. Everything seems almost too beautiful. Ducks swimming in heart shaped circles. People fishing with little poles in the lake artificially stocked with trout. And on every bench a shiny brass memorial gleaming in the sun. I felt for a moment that maybe this was heaven. 10 miles Saturday, 10 miles Sunday. Incredible weather, long runs, furry 🐱 friends, scones and coffee ☕️ are a few of my favorite things. Cooler temps mean longer run intervals for me. This was my view the other day while running with my @noexcusemoms community. I never believed I was a “good” runner. My legs feel like a ton of bricks. My breathing is labored. Rarely do I feel light, fast or breezy. Runners High? What even is that?! I share this image and thoughts because I know so many who see me as strong. And I am. But I’m also weak, heavy, tired, slow, fast, firm and light. WE choose the thoughts we hold onto. Often times, we allow our internal world narrate the images of our external world. Some people see this pic and see me running behind. In fact, when I took this pic, that is all I felt. But - when I clocked in and saw I ran faster than I had in months, I realized that if it wasn’t for seeing “them”, I wouldn’t have strived as hard. And for many here online, maybe in seeing me, you have strived hard too. After all, we wouldn’t be seeing each other if we weren’t on the same route, with the same goals and holding the same pace: really! We are vibrating- as a community, to become better. Thank you for making me better. Thank you for not making me feel so alone on this life road. Thank you for holding me accountable.
