📌Place-name of the week – tings and things Vikings and early Norse settlers introduced things (from Old Norse þings) assemblies or meeting places where political decisions were made, and disputes settled; they also were focal points for trade and religious activity. Found throughout the Viking world, many sites can be identified by ting, thing, ding and fing place-names – Gulating (Norway), Þingvellir (Iceland), Tinganes (Faroe Islands), Dingwall (Highland), Tiongal (Lewis), Fingay Hill (N Yorks) and Thingmote (Dublin). Every July the Manx parliament, Tynwald, continues a 1000-year-old tradition by returning to the ancient meeting place at Tynwald Hill for a ceremony, which includes the proclamation of all new laws created during the year. Shetland’s lawting met on Tingaholm, also known as Lawting Holm, the holm at the north end of Tingwall Loch until the 1570s when it was moved to Scalloway. The islet was originally linked to the mainland by a stone causeway. Many parish names point to a local assembly held in the area – Aithsting (Aith), Delting (Dale), Sandsting (Sand) and Lunnasting (Lunna). Other ting names appear in early documents but have gone out of use - Gnípnaþing at Neap in Nesting, Þvæitaþing, probably where there are several twatt/þveit names on the Westside, and Rauðarþing, Northmavine’s ting possibly located at North Roe. Other local meeting places may have been held in Unst, Yell, Fetlar, Papa Stour and Skerries. A ting held at Gardie in Yell on midsummer’s day 1538 was attended by the lawman of Shetland, along with lawrightmen from Yell and Unst, a dozen assessors, and even a King’s representative. The famous Bobbys Bus Shelter in Unst. Could this be the only bus shelter that is also a tourist attraction!? When Bobby was in primary school, the previous shelter was removed, so he wrote to the local paper back in 1996 asking the council to replace it. His letter was published, and a new shelter was soon in place. From there, furniture started to mysteriously appear in it and its been decorated in many different themes over the years. As Atawhai spreads her wings across the oceans during migration, her name will celebrate the message of kindness worldwide. The name Atawhai also reflects the kindness and dedication of New Zealanders and DOC staff towards the goal of sustaining the royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. Being kind to one another now and always. Something that has been so important in this most difficult and extraordinary year. Is a reminder that we should show kindness to all beings great or small. The word means to show kindness as well as serenely beautiful. Connecting with the world through kindness and that it has brought people together over this difficult year. Atawhai fits in with the overarching COVID-19 message of stay safe - be kind which is an important guideline to try to live by during these times and beyond. Also relates to the kindness the parents show their chick by preening her affectionately whenever they feed her. Jacindas reminder to Be kind during these times. Atawhai means to show kindness and care. COVID came and imprisoned my auto-immune body within the walls of home. This week we are completing the final part in a long term plan ( 30 years ) to replant the entire farm area above the Lost World Cave system. The area that has now been retired back to native bush is approximately 50 hectares. Apart from providing a habitat for native birds these trees will do an important job protecting the quality of the water in the underground streamway. Thanks to Environment Waikato and the Scott family for their support in this worthy endeavour. The team cleared around twenty-five bags of bruck plus masses of fishing floats, larger bits of plastic, rope and huge pieces of net that needed sawing up in order to shift! This is a particularly attractive beach for bruck due to the tides and shape of the bay, but it is difficult to clean up as there is a 2km walk on rough and steep terrain to reach it, let alone bring it back for disposal. A massive thank you to everyone who volunteered, the committees at Unstfest and Shetland Nature Festival, the brilliant landowners who are removing the bruck from Woodwick by quad and trailer over the next couple of days, and @shetlandheritage for taking the bruck out of Unst for disposal with SIC. Hello all! We’re all very pleased to announce the total findings from the beach clean. 113.7kg of rubbish was found by around 80 volunteers this morning on castle beach and going round near pendennis point too! It’s been a really amazing effort and we’ve all enjoyed it, we hope you all had a fab day too! Also a big thank you to whoever helped to clear the sand and seaweed from outside the cafe and along the walkway, it wasn’t at all necessary and everyone’s generosity really helped us and saved us weeks worth of time! Special thank you to who organised the event @onebagbeachclean it was amazing to see everyone down helping out their community to benefit the environment! I’m not sure I could have guessed that I’d end my 20s by climbing a mountain, but yesterday, I was able to do it surrounded by many of the people I love most. A really special way to end one decade and mark the beginning of another. . . Reflecting from a height, I spent my 20s racing through a list of ambitions and was fortunate to achieve so many of them. I visited parts of the world that I could have never imagined and found friends in so many corners of the world - pals who have shaped me, who I lean on in the most challenging moments... and who I irritate with endless voice messages. The last decade was a sprint, a joyous race to create change and to amplify important conversations on disability, education, access and design. It was also a decade of me figuring out who I am, what matters to me and what I stand for. I’m still figuring that out and probably will be forever. . . Today marks the start of my 30s. I’m not sure what this decade might hold, but I couldn’t have predicted all that was made real in my 20s. . . Bere Island is a beautiful Island of the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. To get to this Island we brought our car on the @bereislandferries from Castletownbere. It costs €25 per car return or €8 per person return (with no car) You can see their timetable on their website. Today, in this nondescript building in a culturally diverse neighborhood deep in west London, I passed the UK citizenship test. Taking this test was weirdly emotional for me...the 5 year journey through temporary visas, confusing and complicated paperwork, ridiculous amounts of money spent on visa applications, immigration lawyers etc. has finally come to an end at long last. The fact that I can now permanently remain in the country where my daughter was born is a relief, but it’s no secret that the system favors people like me, and it’s such a bittersweet feeling to celebrate this milestone in my personal journey knowing that there are families all over the world that, due to circumstances beyond their control, can’t be together. Against the backdrop of the events of the past week, I was able to examine my privilege and look at the system that has benefitted me. While studying the official UK History book for this test, I tried to put myself in the shoes of a non-white person studying this material which, for the most part, treads very lightly on Black history (other than a brief couple of paragraphs on slavery) and makes few mentions of Black historical figures or pop culture icons. It made me realize how crucial it is that we expand curriculums to reflect the diversity of this world and educate the next generation, because at the moment the only way for me to learn about people like Harold Moody, Roy Hackett, Owen Henry, Audley Evans, Prince Brown, Ignatius Sancho, Olaudah Equiano, or John Edmonstone was to proactively seek out this (currently) alternative UK history. I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t familiar with any of these people because I wasn’t proactive enough to educate myself. If it weren’t for events this week, I very likely would have passively accepted the whitewashed version of history in the 180 page “official” history book and moved on, but spending some time to dig a little deeper has given me perspective and woven a much richer historical tapestry. I’m thankful that we’ve all been shaken up a bit, and vow to continue to educate myself so that I can be the empathetic, positive and hopeful person that that I have always believed myself to be. - @msaimeephillips on Instagram

WE ALL MADE IT!! To the highest point on Dartmoor and back again .... And .... Whats more, we learnt a few things along the way! 1. Soy Sauce makes a mean topping for campsite noodles in the wild. 2. Twinkle lights are essential for campsite ambience - especially with two live wire boys 😂 3. Waterproof socks are only waterproof up to the point where they end on your ankles (many bogs are deeper than this point! ). 4. Heroes dont always wear capes. 5. You can spend a night awake and rise to the morning sun feeling refreshed (how does that work ?!) pre- coffee too! 6. The stars are stunning and make me feel small. In a comforting blanket filled way. 7. Laughing is the best medicine (and nature .... and movement and the quiet of the remote place) ... 8. Not all chocolate is vegan (always check the label 😉💚). 9. Small copper butterflies are eye catchingly beautiful. 10. It is entirely possible to get to somewhere that feels far away, and to motivate others to do the same. Provided you have courage, a great team ethos (sticking together was ours!) and a secret stash of provisions 😂 !
