I recently came across the page of an artist who was advocating for folks with chronic illness and I literally fell down and cried y’all, cuz I felt so seen and cared for. It has been (so) hard to marry the two worlds I live in, to take up space in this world in a body that’s ailing, to be believed and to find support with constantly changing diagnoses…And I know, there are so many people like me out there and my heart just explodes with love for y’all. it’s so hard to be honest and real about this process, to sit with pain in the absence of answers, and to allow being seen in this vulnerability. I am holding a dream of widespread and radical love and acceptance for the unwell…I cant wait to see us integrate and surpass the spiritual bypass practice that saturates some spiritual communities, and is used towards folks who are suffering. I believe in us growing into a human family that gives more love, not less, to those who are most in need. One of the jewels that has come from this mud is this realization: magic does not exist in a vacuum of love and light. Magic flies the whole spectrum. Thank the gods. Our culture loves the underdog once they’ve journeyed to the top. We love to see the rags to riches, big makeovers, achievements of perfect health, and alladat, but wouldn’t it be so fucking gorgeous if we could just love people harder right in the thick of it? If we could just embrace people in their mess and in their pain without needing the gratification of their polished ‘after’ image to justify our love? Can we love each other while we’re the coal under pressure, before the dream of the diamond even exists? It’s so obvious, but it bears repeating. I love you messes, I love you ill and unwell and weird. I love you. I needed to write this little love letter for myself, I suppose, and for other folks living with chronic pain and invisible illness. This is not art but this initiatory journey has made me who I am, it has informed the spirit of my work, it has deepened my sense of purpose, it has deepened my feelings of gratitude, it has deepened my heart, my grace, and my empathy. This chunky monkey was almost hit by a car few days ago running down a busy Los Angeles street. No collar, no microchip, not fixed. A good samaritan picked him up and a community of neighbors have been caring for him. None are able to foster or adopt him but they are all working together in shifts to care for him. Today two of these amazing humans, @jennagaragiola and @nikovitacco took him (now named Chuck) to the vet so he could get his health checked out and the @standupforpitsfoundation is thrilled to have been able to help by covering the cost. A lost dog report has been filed and we have reached out to the head of LA City Shelters. We will have another update tomorrow about what is needed for this velveteen baked muffin and what the next steps will be. Huge thanks to all the incredible people for stepping up and caring for this little guy in whatever ways they can. Your body is sending you SIGNALS and it is VITAL you listen to them without being consumed with guilt. Giving your body the rest it needs can sometimes elicit feelings of guilt around FOOD. I remember spending every rest day PLAGUED with shame around what I was eating. Whether you are moving your body or not, your body still NEEDS energy from the food you eat to keep your body FUNCTIONING. This ENERGY from food allows your body to continue BREATHING for you, REGULATING your temperature and PUMPING blood around your entire body. These functions are STILL happening when you are resting your incredible body and they REQUIRE the energy from the food you eat to do so! It is completely UNREALISTIC to get every single session in, every week, of every year. Not only is it important you are listening to your body and adapting your training accordingly, it is essential you allowing yourself to LIVE your LIFE too. Living your life will inevitably result in missed sessions, but missed sessions mean absolutely NOTHING in the grand scheme of things. Missed sessions mean you probably created MEMORIES with the people you love, YOURSELF included! The gym will ALWAYS be there, but these moments in your life won’t. They deserve to be enjoyed FULLY, even the moments spent in bed, watching your favourite movie, surrounded by all the GLORIOUS snacks! You deserve to REST your body. You deserve to EAT, even if you’re resting your body. You deserve to CREATE memories with the people you love. Do you have trouble sleeping? 💤⁠ ⁠ Getting consistent, restful sleep - paired with proper nutrition and exercise - is key to helping our brains function that their best. ⁠ ⁠ A good nights sleep can raise the feel-good chemicals in the brain, and it helps us remain alert, pay attention, and be more creative during the day. ⁠ ⁠ Not getting a sufficient amount of sleep poses long-term health impacts - it can raise our cortisol levels, increase our risk of developing depression, and lead to other serious health issues. ⁠ ⁠ So how do we get better sleep? Here are a few things I typically recommend to my clients: ⁠ ⁠ - 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽. Go to bed at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time every morning. Resist the urge to sleep in! ⁠ ⁠ - 𝗣𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. The @sleepfoundation recommends stopping the use of electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed. Put the cell phone away and give your mind time to unwind before bed by reading a book, listening to relaxing music or meditating instead. ⁠ ⁠ - 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗱. I don’t know about you guys but i feel like it’s been a really hard week. I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is but it’s just been tougher than normal. I sort of get it.. This isn’t how anyone saw their year going. I think we hoped (maybe somewhat naively) by now there would be some semblance of normality back in the air- maybe we hoped we’d all be enjoying our planned summer trips abroad without consequence? Or spending carefree time with our loved ones laughing, hugging & catching up on lost time. & it’s not like that at all really is it? But there is definitely something in the air. But it’s not hope or the prospect of better times ahead. There is a real anger in the air. It’s like so many people just feel super frustrated & they are looking for an outlet- for something or someone to take it out on. Prowling for anything to project this disappointment on to. People have missed holidays, have had weddings cancelled, been separated from their friends & families for months, people have lost their jobs & most devastatingly of all people have lost their lives. As a nation we are probably still abit scared, confused & it just feels like we’re going backwards. I don’t know what the answer is, I don’t know exactly what tomorrow holds & how Covid is going to keep on affecting the world- but I do know this, it is not going to be made better by us venting our misguided frustrations across social media & spreading anger & hate throughout these platforms. We all have enough to contend with right now without adding to this with unnecessary negativity & cruel comments- you have no idea how a person is feeling, how they may be struggling & what your seemingly flippant but completely callous words can do to them. Kindness is not going to cure Covid, I know that- but practising a little bit more of it can’t hurt can it? I feel like there’s a distinct absence of it across social media at the moment & it’s a real shame. We should be being there for each other, Helping build each other up & spreading some positivity- instead of finding reasons to tear each other down.
